Coffee giveaway and discount from MoreThanAlive.com!

You all responded so enthusiastically to the last coffee giveaway here, that More Than Alive agreed to another coffee giveaway!

I'm picky when it comes to coffee and brewing methods, but I have to say that Cane Creek Coffee and my AeroPress are an amazing combo. I've been able to serve Cane Creek Coffee to a number of guests at our home, and everyone has enjoyed it!

I even really like the decaf Cane Creek Coffee, which makes for a warming winter evening drink. We're still having cold weather here, so hot drinks and warming meat-and-potatoes dinners have been on the slate!

Review: Aerobie AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker (video demo and photo tutorial)

Latte made with the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker
My Aerobie AeroPress with a latte

For a while now, I have wanted to be able to make coffee for an occasional treat or to serve to guests (we're not regular coffee drinkers). I assumed we'd eventually end up getting a drip coffee maker -- maybe a small one that wouldn't take up too much counter space.

Unknown to me, Joshua started researching how to make the best coffee. (I love it when he does all the research for me!) Drip coffee makers, while convenient, just don't make the best coffee. A French Press can be a good option, but leaves some sediment and can make bitter coffee.

I was pleasantly surprised when Joshua gave me an AeroPress coffee and espresso maker for a birthday gift this year! It is really easy to use and makes a perfect cup of coffee. I am picky when it comes to coffee, but the AeroPress makes very good coffee -- even with a novice like me making it.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker

A quick overview:

The Aerobie AeroPress can make espresso or Americano coffee, and only takes a few minutes, start to finish.

A finely ground coffee is used, and it is brewed quickly to avoid bitterness. The paper filters produce a coffee with no sediment in the bottom of the cup.

Tips for making great coffee using the AeroPress

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker

AeroPress features I love:

Compact. (I love small appliances that do great things!)

Re-usable paper filters. (Just rinse and lay flat to dry.)

Foam/crema. (That's due to the oils present in the beans, and air being pressed through.)

Manual. (Nothing to plug in!)

Easy to customize. (I like to be in control of brewing time, strength, etc.)

Easy to use! (Our first cup tasted great.)

Affordable.

Made in the USA.

BPA-free.

Video demo of the AeroPress in use

I asked Joshua to take a video of me using the AeroPress. This 7-minute video explains how the AeroPress works and shows how to use it, including the cleaning process (which is very easy as well!).

Photo tutorial showing how to use the AeroPress

I've taken photos of how to make coffee with the AeroPress, from start to finish. If you prefer a photo tutorial to a video demonstration, this part is for you! :)

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: all the parts

Here are the AeroPress parts: Coffee scoop, AeroPress chamber and plunger, screen/cap, and small round filters (in holder). There is also a funnel (not pictured, but shown in the video) for transferring your freshly ground coffee from your grinder to the AeroPress, and a stirrer (also not shown) for stirring the coffee.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: place filter into screen/cap

To start, place a paper filter into the screen/cap. This photo shows a new filter, but the filters can be re-used. (We'll get to that part near the end.)

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker ready for coffee grounds

Screw screen/cap onto the AeroPress chamber, and set atop a mug or coffee cup. I'm using a clear mug so you can see everything that happens (although this mug holds about 16 ounces, much more than needed).

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker, filled with coffee grounds

Fill the AeroPress chamber with coffee grounds. You can use 1,2, 3, or 4 scoops. (I'm using 2 in these photos.)

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: get your hot water ready!

Use hot water: 175 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for great-tasting coffee from the AeroPress! Use 185 degrees if you're making a latte. (See the tips below for ways to easily make the perfect hot water.)

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: slowly pour in the hot water

Slowly pour hot water into the AeroPress chamber, until water level matches the number of scoops of coffee you used.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: gently stir for 10 seconds

Gently stir for 10 seconds with the stirrer (comes with the AeroPress). Some coffee may drip through, especially if you're using a coarser grind, but that's okay. :)

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: Wet plunger and begin to press, gently.

Wet the end of the plunger (I dip it in my pitcher of hot water) and place it on top of the AeroPress chamber.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: continue pressing until coffee and air is pressed through.

Gently press the plunger down, taking about 20-30 seconds to press the coffee and air through the filter. If your coffee is ground finely (just a bit above espresso setting), the gentle pressure should take about that long to push the coffee and air through.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: the lovely foam that comes at the end of the press

This is the foam that is pushed through at the end. Some coffees make more foam than others, so just experiment and find what you like.

Now, I have a double espresso (2 scoops of coffee). Before I finish my coffee, I'm going to clean the AeroPress. It takes about 30 seconds! Here's how:

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: head to the kitchen sink to clean

I head over to the kitchen sink. Unscrew the screen/cap.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: remove the screen. See the filter?

When you take off the screen, this is what you'll see.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: the filter can be re-used. Just rinse!

Peel off the filter, rinse under running water, and set on a clean towel. Filters can be re-used 10-15 or more times!

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: you'll also need to rinse the bottom of the coffee press

Push the plunger the rest of the way through the AeroPress, pushing the coffee grounds into your compost bucket, trash can, or sink garbage disposal. Rinse the end of the plunger and chamber under running water.

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: the inside is wiped clean from the plunger. Yes, really!

The inside of the chamber will not need cleaning, as the tight plunger pushes everything through. Yes, really! I was doubtful at first, but I believe it's true! :)

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: allow the rinsed AeroPress parts to dry

Set the rest of the parts to dry on a clean towel. Here you can see the stirrer, plunger, chamber, screen, and used filter. You can go ahead and screw the wet filter back into the AeroPress and let it dry in there for next time!

AeroPress coffee and espresso maker: Enjoy your espresso! Make Americano coffee, a latte, or whatever you prefer!

Okay, back to the double espresso I just made!

I can add more hot water from my pitcher, and make Americano coffee.

Or, I can add hot milk for a latte. (Or add cold milk and microwave the mug until hot, for the latte.)

Or I can freeze the espresso into little ice cubes for making homemade iced/blender coffees.

Or add ice to the hot espresso I just made, for iced coffee.

And the whole process takes UNDER 5 minutes! Three minutes heating water while assembling the filter/coffee, 45 seconds to make the coffee, and 1 minute of cleanup. I don't think it could be easier! :)

My delicious hot latte!
A delicious hot latte, made with the AeroPress

Tips for making great coffee using the AeroPress:

The best water temperature for coffee is 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Use 185 degrees if you're making a latte.

Aside from using a thermometer to check your water temperature each time you make coffee, here are a couple shortcuts to getting the perfect hot water:

Using a tea kettle: Measure your water (use the same amount each time), time how long it takes to boil (use the same heat setting/burner each time), and then heat water for 3/4 of that time to achieve 175 degrees. Alternately, use a thermometer and time how long it takes to get to 175 degrees and heat for that length of time.

Using the microwave: Use a glass pitcher (shown in video and photos above) and measure water (use the same amount each time). Heat in microwave until boiling. Use 3/4 of the time it took to boil, and you will have water that is 175 degrees. (For 2 cups of water in our microwave, it's 3 minutes.) Alternately, use a thermometer and time how long it takes for the water to reach 175 degrees, and heat for that length of time.

The one thing I wish the AeroPress included was a saucer of some sort, for placing the stirrer and/or parts on while making the coffee. Use a small plate or clean paper towel if needed. I also usually keep a clean towel out on the counter, which I set all of the rinsed parts on.

I have washed the AeroPress in hot soapy water, but I really haven't noticed a difference between washing and just rinsing (as long as you're working in a sanitary kitchen!). :)

A scoop of beans = a scoop of ground coffee, for those of you who grind your own coffee.

Freshly roasted coffee beans make the best coffee! Watch those expiration dates and get the freshest and best coffee possible. It does make a difference!

Alan Adler, the inventor of the AeroPress, has posted info and answers to questions over on the Coffee Geek forum.

You can also read over 700 reviews of the AeroPress on Amazon.com. Obviously, I'm not the first person to rave about the AeroPress! I'm just a little late to the coffee scene. ;)

Birthday review, giveaway, and discount from More Than Alive: Cane Creek Coffee

Cane Creek Coffee

I like coffee, but I'm also picky. Bitter, low-quality coffee? No, thanks! Since tea is more affordable (and healthier as well!), coffee has been more of a rare treat for me. :)

My birthday was last weekend, and Joshua got me an Aerobie AeroPress coffee maker (review to come -- I love it!!) after picking up on a few hints that I would love to be able to make coffee at times. More Than Alive teamed up with his efforts and sent me some Cane Creek Coffee to review. So much fun!

Cane Creek Coffee

Cane Creek Coffee is a High Grown coffee (Fair Trade and naturally grown). I really like the Cinnamon Hazelnut coffee. The ground coffee beans have a typically strong aroma. Dark, rich, and smooth is how I would describe the resulting brew!

I'm certainly no coffee expert, but I've had plenty of coffees that I didn't enjoy. Cane Creek Coffees have met my expectations for a delicious coffee, and now I'm only left wondering how to fund this new addiction. ;)

Big Berkey Water Filter Giveaway: Winner Announcement!

Berkey water filter with Contigo water bottle

The winner of the Big Berkey with Waterview Spigot is:

Jenny B., who left this comment:

"What a generous giveaway! Please enter me in the drawing. Thank you."

Congrats to Jenny B.! I've emailed you to get your mailing address. :)

A big THANK YOU to More Than Alive for hosting the Big Berkey water filter giveaway! I was encouraged by everyone's enthusiasm and wish I could bless each of you with a Berkey water filter. :)

Berkey water filter with Contigo water bottle

The sun peeked out this afternoon and I snapped this quick picture of our Berkey water filter and my new Contigo water bottle. So pretty! But why did I need to buy a new one? We had 3 of the water bottles, and Joshua and I use them constantly.

Well, back in November, we both left our water bottles at Joshua's grandma's house! She offered to mail them to us, but I didn't think it would be worth the postage, since I didn't imagine it would be too long before we went back to visit.

But here we are... almost 8 weeks later... and while Joshua has used the remaining water bottle going to and from work, I was using a glass here at home. And I was constantly thirsty. Seriously! I have been so spoiled with the water bottles. I even ask the kids to fill mine when it is empty (talk about luxury!).

I told Joshua, "We NEED to go visit your grandma again because I am so thirsty!" Haha! :) But instead... Costco had 3-packs of essentially the same water bottle (different design, and little bumps near the top, but otherwise the same) for $15.99 and so last week Joshua bought me a package.

I was surprised by how much I missed my Contigo water bottle, but then, THAT is why I originally wrote a blog post about it! (There's a reason these water bottles are so highly reviewed on Amazon.com!) I love the Contigo water bottles and if you have a Costco nearby and need a great water bottle, definitely check them out! :)

Big Berkey Giveaway with Waterview Spigot!

Ruth drinking water by the Royal Berkey

We've had our Berkey water filtering system for almost 3 years now, and we LOVE it. I wrote a review of the Berkey water filter a couple years ago, and have been priviledged to host discount codes for 10% off at MoreThanAlive.com, the Christian-owned company where we purchased our Royal Berkey.

This week, I've got something more: a Berkey discount code AND a giveaway! More Than Alive is offering a Big Berkey with a Waterview Spigot to one winner of this giveaway. I'm honored that they would offer this for readers of my website, and I'm thrilled that one of you will be blessed with a Berkey water filter for free! (See the end of this post for giveaway details.) Note: This giveaway is now closed. Future discount codes will be available on this site. Subscribe for free to be notified of future discounts and giveaways!

For 5 years of our married life, we had been buying and refilling jugs of drinking water at the grocery store each week, and it was a lot of work to fill and transport all that water. Even at $0.37 a gallon for a refill, I was spending $4-5 each week on drinking water.

The jugs took up a lot of space in my cart, a lot of space in our car trunk, and a lot of time to fill. And then the inevitable would happen... "Honey, it's been 8 days since we went to the store, and we only have 2 gallons of water left..."

Ruth filling a glass from the Berkey

Our tap water was horrible, and all the filtering systems we had looked into were expensive and/or slow. When I found out about the Berkey water filters, I practically begged Joshua to help me research their efficacy and buy one! :) He readily agreed and we purchased the Royal Berkey from More Than Alive in 2008.

We're still using the original filters (which should last 3 more years!). In fact, we love the Berkey so much, we gave Royal Berkeys as a wedding gift to my brothers who got married in May and July of last year. We couldn't think of a more useful gift than clean drinking water that's convenient and affordable! :)

I tend to ramble when I talk about our Berkey water filter, because I'm just so thankful and blessed to have one in my kitchen! :)

On our countertop: Berkey water filter, glass, water bottle, and jug for filling

Why we love the Berkey:

The water tastes EXCELLENT!

Berkey drinking water is affordable. Over the life of the filters, the water is only $0.016 per gallon! In 12 months' time, our savings would completely purchase a Royal Berkey water filter.

Having a Berkey water filter is convenient. The water filters quickly (4 gallons per hour for our Royal Berkey) and it's right in my kitchen. The tank holds several gallons of filtered water at one time, and the children can fill their own cups of drinking water.

It doesn't require electricity to filter the water. The Berkey water filter is part of our "emergency preparedness" mindset. It can even filter rain water (but not sea water).

The stainless steel Berkey even looks beautiful... although here in the Seattle area people who see it usually first ask us "How much coffee do you guys drink??!!" :)

Berkey water filter

What's not to love about the Berkey water filter?

Honestly, I have trouble thinking of dislikes about this product! :)

I will say that if I am filling a large cooking pot with water (like when I cook pinto beans), I like to pull a chair up to the Berkey and set my pan on the chair to fill instead of holding it. :)

Another possible issue is that the Berkey water filters are fairly tall (you can see dimensions on the website), and may not fit on counters with cupboards above. We have had our Royal size Berkey while living in 3 different rentals now, and have always found a spot for it without purchasing a stand of some sort. :)

Royal Berkey with Waterview Spigot

What is the "Waterview Spigot"?

One of the free items More Than Alive offers with their Berkey water filtering systems is a waterview spigot. (When we ordered our Berkey, we chose the additional fluoride filters as our free gift, since we're filtering city tap water. For those filtering well water or rain water, the fluoride filters are unnecessary.)

The waterview spigot is a spigot with a tall glass tube attachment that shows the water level in the stainless steel Berkey tank of already-filtered water! No more guesswork or accidentally filling an already-filled Berkey and causing a flood. (Umm, yes, I have done this a couple times in the time we've owned our Berkey!)

In conjunction with this giveaway, More Than Alive sent us a waterview spigot to try with our Royal Berkey. I had heard rave reviews of the waterview spigot from some friends of ours who have one, but hadn't purchased one myself since I'm a tightwad and was accustomed to just looking inside to see how full the tank was. :)

Joshua put the waterview spigot on our Royal Berkey a couple weeks ago, and I love having it!

One perk is that the water runs out faster (it must have a bigger opening than the original spigot did), and you know me... I love to chug my water! :)

And of course, the other perk is that I can keep the Berkey full without any trouble! :)

Royal Berkey with Waterview Spigot

We "hacked" the Waterview Spigot!

Well, kinda. :)

We filled the bottom tank nearly to the top, and then took out 1 gallon of water. Joshua marked the new water level on the waterview tube. Then, we took out another gallon of water, and Joshua marked that level on the waterview tube as well. This gives me a concrete way of determining how many gallons to put in at any time! I used to wait until the bottom tank was almost empty before filling, but that's not nearly as convenient as knowing I can put in 1-2 gallons, for sure, with no risk of overflowing. :)

Ruth drinking water by the Royal Berkey

Why order from More Than Alive?

All Berkey systems have FREE SHIPPING --and More Than Alive ships quickly in my experience!

All Berkey systems come with a FREE GIFT! (Update from 2012: More Than Alive no longer offers a free gift with Berkey purchases.) I highly recommend the additional fluoride filters if you have city tap water, as in our experience it does make a difference in the water quality. A friend gave me one of the chlorine shower filters when we lived in Ohio, and it was very nice as well. I was unable to use it at our apartment when we moved to WA, so I passed it on to another friend when we moved. And now I've tried the waterview spigot as well, and it's just great! So, you have a hard decision ahead if you're buying a Berkey and need to figure out what free gift to choose. ;)

The discount code:

This week for 5 days only (January 3-7, 2011), get 10% off any order by using this code at checkout: TX2Q4

If you've been waiting to purchase a Berkey water filter, this discount will give you $20+ off your purchase price! :)

What if you already own a Berkey? Well, go ahead and enter the giveaway, if you wish! I can think of several families who I would love to bless with a Berkey, and you probably can too! :)

Full Disclosure, as always: After purchasing our Berkey water filter and being thrilled with its performance, I signed up as an affiliate with More Than Alive. If you purchase from them using my links, I receive a commission on sales. The discount code is valid with or without using my links. :)

I am really choosy when it comes to product promotions. In fact, most everything I've ever reviewed or mentioned here is something we purchased ourselves and loved enough to want to tell others about it... and that most certainly includes the Berkey water filters! :)

Winners of MoreThanAlive Giveaway!

It's 9:15pm and the house is amazingly quiet! I guess that is the plus side of having children who all get up when I do at 5am... they're rarely up past 8pm. :) The problem is that... I am not usually up long last 8pm either! :) I think I need to harness some of their energy... maybe start having a morning cup of coffee... or else have them help me with more of the work around here. :)
Anyway, I just went to random.org and selected 2 winners for last week's giveaway! They are:
Toni and cguerra17
I will email both of you with details on choosing a prize. :) THANK YOU to all of you who participated by leaving comments... and maybe even got in on the extra good Berkey discount! :)
By the way, if you're still considering the Berkey water filtering system and want to be notified by email when there's a future discount available (10% off or greater), send me your email address and I will let you send you any info as it becomes available to me. I want you to be able to get the best deal possible! :)

I'm hosting a giveaway and 10% discount code this week (Monday-Friday), but I just got details on a much better deal available today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday) only. If you're seriously considering ordering a Berkey water filter, this is the best deal I've ever found on a new Berkey!

In short, if you purchase a $10 book on Amazon.com, you will receive a 25% discount code for More Than Alive.

If you were planning to purchase a Berkey ($200+) then 25% off of that is at least $50 savings. Also, for those of you who get Amazon.com gift certificates through SwagBucks (like I do), you can use the gift cards to pay for your $10 book. This is what I plan to do. :)

Giveaway from MoreThanAlive.com: Bulk foods, tea, coffee, and more!

MoreThanAlive.com is hosting another giveaway and discount code for us this week! Over the years we've tried a number of their products and really enjoy their herbal tea blends.

I've been drinking The Blues Brew over the past few weeks and while I can't claim any miraculous mood-lifting results, I do think the comforting warmth of a nutritious herbal tea has helped boost my mood, especially as the days shorten and winter approaches.

I like to brew my loose leaf teas in the IngenuiTEA pot, which is super convenient and makes a couple cups at a time. :) When pregnant, herbal pregnancy tea is my go-to beverage. Discovering The Blues Brew means I'm keeping my tea cup busy while recovering from, well, everything. Pregnancy, moving, stress, LIFE. :)

Most of all, though, we love our Berkey water filter! Clean, healthy, filtered drinking water that is affordable and practical has been a huge blessing to us, and I certainly don't miss refilling jugs of drinking water from the grocery store. We have numerous friends and family members who use and love the Berkey system as well. But, I've raved about the Berkey in the past, so I won't continue to do so here. You can read my review of the Berkey water filtering system here (with questions answered in the comments).

Today's giveaway (2 winners): YOUR CHOICE of a pound of any bulk food (this includes herbal tea blends or The Blues Brew, cane creek coffee, and a variety of foods and ingredients!) OR a beautiful silk scarf (see colors here).

To be entered in the giveaway, please log in and then leave a comment on this post saying you'd like to be entered. (No need to leave your email address in the comment, since I can see the one on your account.) The drawing is open today (Monday, November 8) through Friday, November 12, 2010. Two winners will be randomly selected and posted on Monday, November 15. Giveaway is open to U.S. or Canadian mailing addresses.
