What type of lettuce is your favorite?

Lettuces

I really like most any fresh garden lettuce. This year we grew a kind called "Buttercrunch" and it's SO good!! It's colorful, firm, and so tender. It tears easily for salads and is really tasty!

Iceberg

Figures I would choose a vegetable that has more in common with watermelon than a green leafy plant! Ok, iceberg lettuce lacks flavor, it has little nutrition, and the yellow stuff at the center tastes like lady bugs--ick! But iceberg lettuce is juicy, has a crunchy texture and seems to top a burger as good as it makes a salad. It is not thin or overly bitter and gives great volume. Probably best when mixed with Romaine and other lettuces (or spinach). I know iceberg is not adventurous but I like it and that is what the poll was about :)

I voted for Romaine but like

I voted for Romaine but like Tammy said enjoy most fresh lettuce from the garden. We make caesar salad quite often using romaine.

Buttercrunch is good and that is the kind we grew when we had our market garden. I still order that type for our regular lettuce every year. This year I grew a mesculun salad mix which has several different kinds of lettuce and we've enjoyed having that in a regular garden salad.

Tammy's picture

Do you have...

Do you have fresh lettuce all summer from your garden, Lindsey? I think the last of ours went up to seed last week :(

Lindsey's picture

I can't remember how long we

I can't remember how long we had lettuce last year but I'm sure it was into August at least. I'll make a note of long it lasts this summer. Just the other day I put in another planting so hopefully we'll have more even later. Do you usually put in another planting?

Tammy's picture

nope...

...that must be why :) In the hot months, it doesn't last long before it goes up to seed though :(

Romaine for us!

My husband doesn't care for some of the interesting leaf lettuces out there, so we have found Romaine to be a favorite with us. It seems like whenever we grow our own lettuce it tastes bitter. We'll have to try the Buttercrunch.

Tammy's picture

Lettuce does vary with weather conditions...

...also I think it's best picked in the early morning hours before the hot sun has come out; it's supposedly crisper and sweeter at that time of day. Joshua likes "boring" lettuce, too :)

Lindsey's picture

Do you take the outer leaves

Do you take the outer leaves off first? I find that they can be bitter so almost always remove the first layer and use the rest. :)

Tammy's picture

Depends...

I only take them off  if they look damaged or something. :) But usually they are so I do! :)

We normally buy Romaine,

We normally buy Romaine, because it "keeps" better, but I really like green leaf lettuce.

Tammy's picture

I agree, LeAnne!

I find that romaine does keep well also. Thanks for joining in, here, btw! :)

red leaf lettuce here

A favourite here is red leaf lettice!! I hardly ever buy iceberg... Buttercruch is yummy too! :)

Tammy's picture

Do you grow your own?

Do you have a garden, Tanya? I like red leaf lettuce better than green leaf lettuce :D

Iceberg- the timesaver

I voted for Iceberg lettuce. I know this may sound lazy...but I buy great big bags of Iceberg lettuce with bits of carrots and cabbage already mixed in the bag at our local grocery store for a fairly reasonable price :) This make having a salad for lunch or supper very quick and easy, just add your favorite croutons and dressing and enjoy!
My son loves salad...actually...he craves salad:) My husband and son always enjoy a good salad for supper and buying in the bags makes it easy and a timesaver, at least for me anyway:)

...and cheaper!

Iceberg is usually cheaper than the romaine and other salad blends when you're buying it in the bag like that... my problem is that it doesn't keep as well (or, we don't eat enough salads :D).

Nice to "see" you here, Jeanne! You get regular mention on my blog, as my walking partner :D

I voted Romaine. I like the

I voted Romaine. I like the way it looks best. :) When I make a salad though, I like best to combine several different lettuces.

The one we buy is most often iceburg, because it's cheaper. I always compost a few of the outer leaves and don't use much of the middle. We were laughing one time with a friend though, because they don't use much of the outside, but more of the inside. We determined we should give our 'bad' salad parts to each other...

Buttercrunch, spinach and mixed greens for me!

I LOVE buttercrunch lettuce; like another poster, we always had it in our garden growing up. It was such a treat to pick it fresh right before a meal! Now I buy mixed greens --a variety of lettuce and herbs-- or just plain spinach, both of which make a yummy salad. :)

Grinner's picture

a little of both

We get both red and green leaf lettuce. I'm not personally the one that buys it...but it tastes good.:)It has a taste about it that tastes healthy and it also looks healthy...if you know what I mean. Sometimes the circular ones look too perfect.:P Once again, good poll!
Smile lots!Laugh often!

My favourite lettuces...

My favourite lettuces are definitely Oak leaf lettuce and "Lollo rosso" and "Lollo blondo".

Tammy's picture

I have oakleaf in my fridge right now :)

...it's the very last of our garden lettuce. Are "lollo rosso" and "lollo blondo" Finnish names, or just lettuces I've never heard of before? :)

Lollo Rosso

I hope linking is allowed... http://www.dlc.fi/~marianna/gourmet/i_lettuc.htm

Scroll down to find picture and description of lollo rosso lettuce.

Tammy's picture

Okay... looks similar to...

...our "red leaf" lettuce. My dad's favorite lettuce is called "Black Simpson" and it's a really dark red at the ends. Anyway, I noticed on that first link, there's a picture of "Butterhead" lettuce which is what is also called "Buttercrunch" and is so delicious!! :)

Don't forget the spinach! =)

I'm a fresh spinach girl. =) I don't mind lettuce, but given a choice, I prefer the sweeter side of spinach to the more bitter side of lettuce.

What kind of lettuce do I like best? Romaine.

webseitler's picture

I like Spinach, Romaine and

I like Spinach, Romaine and Iceburg. In that order. :)

Tammy's picture

I like spinach, too, but...

...I like it mixed with other lettuces!! :)

We are spinach people here too!

Spinach is our favorite. I've also heard that you can massage olive oil onto kale and use that as "greens" in a salad! And chard topped with balsamic reductions rock too!

Other

I voted other because I LOVE spinach. In a quick fix we eat that bagged salad with Romaine lettuce but to me there's nothing like a good spinach salad.

leaf lettuce mostly...but

We eat mostly the leaf type lettuces, but we love the buttercrunch, the tiny tims, and the ruffled lettuces too. We can grow lettuce most of the winter in hot caps, and it is so much better winter grown than spring or summer. Fall is just tooo hot. I do prefer my greens to have some size on them, not to be the baby size that is so popular right now. I like to pull up whole heads and make gorgeous plate salads....just looks so fancy! Do ya'll have special recipes for each type of salad green? Like wedges of iceburg, crisp and icey cold with chunky blue cheese or remoulade dressing, or beautiful crisp romaine made into garlicky ceasar's salad, or buttercrunch made into a cobb salad with lots of crunchy croutons and peppercorn dressing? We love salads.....

Tammy's picture

Salad greens

Do ya'll have special recipes for each type of salad green?

I'm not an expert in salads, but I'd love it if you had time to send a few of your favorite salad recipes for us to try when we get a chance! :) You're probably much more experienced than I am!! :)

lettuce

We like butter lettuce and we use spinach in place of lettuce in salads and sandwiches/wraps.

Lettuce poll

Just wanted to note that this poll was originally published in July, 2006. It got 85 votes at that time. :)

My favorite lettuce is still Buttercrunch, but I love any leaf lettuce! :)

joyfullyhis's picture

Fresh garden grown lettuce-

Fresh garden grown lettuce- a variety usually. But I love red-leaf mixed with spinach and iceberg for salads too.
We like to grow a "mesclin" mix too. Some of it can be bitter but usually not if you shade it or plant it early/late and not mid summer.
Buttercrunch is good too!

Romaine is my favorite lettuce plain

but my favorite salad greens blend is romaine, iceberg and spinach. A great mix of textures and flavors and nutrients.

lettuce

Definitely going for the buttercrunch.

lettuce poll

I have come to love buttercrunch. We grew it last year and the kids gobbled it up.

This year we're growing buttercrunch, musclin and, spinach.

Try growing some in a pot on your porch Tammy!

Romaine

is my favorite but if money is tight then I will buy iceburg.I only use iceburg for taco salad.I find romaine lettuce just doesn't go with it like iceburg does holding up wet in taco salad.

Spinach is frugal

I like spinach best... alone or mixed with baby greens in a salad. The giant tubs of baby spinach at Costco are around $3.79 and they last us two weeks. If it starts to get too icky for fresh use, I just cook it into eggs or with a little fresh garlic in olive oil so its not wasted.

I like those tubs of Costco

I like those tubs of Costco spinach, too. I blend a cup of spinach with enough water to get it to blend and pour it into a pint-size freezer bag and freeze it for smoothies. That way the whole tub of spinach gets "used" (frozen) before it gets slimy.

lettuce preference

I prefer baby mixed lettuce greens: romaine, beets, spinach, oak leaf, black simpson, red leaf etc. It's sold as "Mesclun" blend. A packet usually makes 2 rows in my garden, from which I can pick June thru Nov,if I am lucky (I am in New England). Romaine lasts longer in my fridge, as does Iceberg ( not my fav-DH likes it) compared to the baby greens (if bought in WInter months from the store). My lettuce is kept in the garden and picked as needed before lunch/dinner. : )

Spinach too - or massaged kale

My husband and I like fresh spinach - in salads and smoothies. We also like massaged kale salads - that's when you take kale (we like lacinato/dinosaur kale best) and massage olive oil or maybe avocado into it, add veges, fruits, or nuts, and after a few minutes, the kale gets much more tender. :)

Mesclun

I like to grow a mix of lettuces called "mesclun" and use the leaves as cut-and-come-again lettuce, which is to cut the leaves off a few at a time from a variety of lettuces and leave the root to regrow more leaves. The plants produce for more than a month this way. The mix I grow has kale, beet greens, leaf lettuce, corn salad, spinach, chard, sorrel, cress, radicchio, and mustard greens. Because this mix can be stronger tasting, which I like but the family doesn't, I add it to a milder lettuce like red leaf or romaine.

i voted other-because butter

i voted other-because butter lettuce fresh from the garden can't be beat. it's the only kind i am growing this year because my husband loved it so much.

lettuce

I like baby spinach- eat it on practically everything- sandwiches, hamburgers...yum
