One of the best ways to get cooking done with small children in the house is to involve them as much as possible!
Yehoshua started out (at 10 months of age) helping to wash dishes. Now, (at 2.5) Yehoshua's dishes-duty involves setting the table for meals, clearing dirty dishes from the table, and putting away clean and dry dishes!

Yehoshua also likes to help mix things when I'm cooking. Here is Yehoshua mixing cream-filled pumpkin cupcakes for me! Sometimes Yehoshua is messy when he is helping stir, but we're working on that. :) |

Yehoshua also likes to add things to the bowl! One day recently, I was making a buttermilk substitution and had put some lemon juice in a measuring cup. I turned my back to get the milk (to add to the juice) and when I turned back around, Yehoshua had already added the lemon juice to the bowl of ingredients! :)
We use cooking together as a learning time. Yehoshua learns about different ingredients ("Cocoa, Mama!" "Raw eggs!"), different foods (cookies, cakes, brownies, pies, muffins, etc.), and measuring/counting ("1 teaspoon, 2 teaspoons..."). :)

Yehoshua thinks muffins are fun to make, because he gets to put the paper liners in the pan for me! :) In this picture, we are making Triple-decker Pumpkin Granola muffins. |

Here, Yehoshua is getting ready to eat his Baked Cabbage Casserole supper. :) Yehoshua is not a picky eater, although a lot of times he doesn't eat a large amount of food. :) |

One day, Yehoshua came to me with this bowl of "soup" and this fork and spoon. I helped him get his bib on and into his chair so he could pretend to eat. Before he started "eating", he folded his hands and started praying. I ran for the camera! :)

Awww, he is SO cute!!

Thanks
With a new little one I tend "hurry" everything in site "before the baby wakes". This was a lovely reminder to stop and let my other ones help me in the kitchen. It is not hard for me to cook while holding my new one but it is easier not to. Tonight my oldest asked to help and I said no (bows head in shame!). This was such a GREAT reminder of what I should be doing! I used to do so much when it was only one. Less with two and now with three I am just too rushed! I am going to slow down thanks to this fantastic blog!

Cooking with little ones
Thanks, Anonymous! (Why don't people put their names more often?!) :)
Shorty, I struggle with the same thing sometimes! It's always easier to do things without little helpers and it's tempting for me to try to get the children to entertain themselves while I work. I try to remind myself that it's better to work together with them and develop a relationship... because sending them off to play isn't having a relationship with my children! :)
I also say "no" way too often. Whenever Yehoshua asks for something, my first reaction is "no". I'm trying to do better about actually thinking about his request first, and then saying "yes!" more often! :)
He WASHED dishes at ten
He WASHED dishes at ten months? Seriously... babies can't even talk and most of them can't walk at that age. Get real!
If your child is that gifted, he should be in the Guiness book of World Records!
Babies washing dishes
Well, I didn't say he washed dishes; I said he helped wash dishes! ;) Here's some clarification, if you like. :)
Rude Person
I just have to comment to the person telling you to get real about the boys washing dishes. I think it was a rude remark and they don't know your family very well. Anyone with common sense knows you are blogging about the dish washing and we all love to hear it. You are the greatest MOM and DAD to your family. So don't let this be a put down. Who knows they might be in Guiness book of records! They are wonderful children and a joy to be around. It does a heart good to see the way your family interacts with each other and with other people too. This is becasue you take the time teaching and sharing with them.
Love, Grandma Lee
I agree, this person must
I agree, this person must not know much about children or have much of an imagination. I think it is great that you let them ' help ' out at a young age!
Thanks :)
And now everyone should KNOW that there's a Grandma perusing this blog, keeping tabs on her babies :D
On a more serious note, though, thanks, Grandma and Ruth! :D
Good reminder
Thanks for sharing, Tammy! I needed that reminder, I will often start letting them help me more, but then I'm in a hurry and it is soon forgotten. Nathaniel loves to help me, so I must have him helping me more. :) The girls too...

In a hurry...
It seems there's always a reason to be in a hurry, isn't there? :)
