Where do you get most of your recipes?

My own personal stash...

I still get most of my recipes from my trusty old recipe box, complete with index cards and all that. If we try a new recipe that we really love, I add it to the box.

In the past few months, we have gotten more recipes from online, but I used to never get a recipe from anywhere except friends' favorites or if I tried what someone else made and I liked it. I got tired of recipes that just didn't work very well.

Now that we have this cooking website, we like to try out guest chef recipes, or recipes that people submit for us to try. That's always fun!

I get most of my recipes

I get most of my recipes from cookery magazines, and the rest online. I usually find that most cookbooks only have one or two recipes that I will actually use, whereas a cookery magazine will usually have about half a dozen, and is about a sixth of the price. I am also less inhibited about cutting the recipes out of magazines to stick them in my recipe scrapbooks - although I may have to consider doing the same with books soon, just to make some space!

Cutting out recipes

I cut out recipes a lot! I am always finding second-hand, no-so-spectacular cook books, and I look through and cut out recipes that sound good. I file them in my recipe box so that I come across them when I'm browsing for what to make.

Which reminds me of another reason I don't care for cookbooks as much as individual recipes: When I have some chicken breast to use, I really don't feel like looking through a number of cook books to find all the options for chicken. It's so much easier to just look through the "chicken" section in my recipe box! :)

Most of our [main dish]

Most of our [main dish] recipes aren't really recipes, they are just family favorites that I don't even need a recipe for! :) I learned how to cook them from watching my Mom and Nana. I like to experiment to see how I can be more efficient (time wise) and make them healthier without anyone noticing. :) We tend to like very basic, simple, meat & potato type meals and I rarely try a new recipe, unless I make it as a side dish or something extra for Mom and I (we're more willing to try something new...).

Recipes for desserts and such I get from all over and have a personal collection of things we really like. But with dessert recipes, my family will try just about anything new. :)

Family eating habits

Your family sounds a lot like how I was raised, LeAnne! My dad doesn't like to try new recipes. :) Some of my brothers decided they want to be like that, too... except when it comes to desserts. :) I'm glad Joshua likes to try new things! :D

Where I get my recipies

I use a combination of all of the options =)Thanks for your website Tammy! It is a big blessing! =)

You're welcome!

I imagine most people do use a combination of sources for their recipes, but I thought it would be interesting to know what source is the most used/most popular! :)

A large majority of my

A large majority of my recipes are family favs and have been around since before I was born. But we also love our circa late 70's/early 80's Betty Crocker cookbook. I have new cookbooks but have yet to crack the covers to see if they're any good.

Cook Books

Thanks for your comment, Cassie!

I probably just don't have any really good cook books! I don't like it when I try a recipe from a cook book and it doesn't turn out very well. That doesn't make me feel like trying other recipes from it! But when I really want to make something new, and I can't get online to find a recipe, I use a cook book. :)

I get my recipes from my sister's collections also. But when I'm cooking on my own, I always get them online. :)

Getting recipes online

I think one of the keys to getting a good recipe online is having a good source! I have always enjoyed trying other people's favorites. Everyone makes some really ordinary foods and a few really spectacular ones. I like finding the special ones! :)

Our local public library has

Our local public library has been a great resource for cookbooks. I prefer recipe cards as well and only like having one or two trusty cookbooks, so checking out cookbooks from the library is an easy (and inexpensive!) way to get new recipe ideas.

I also have found some great recipes (free) at America's Test Kitchen (http://www.americastestkitchen.com). Anything published/written by America's Test Kitchen or Cook's Illustrated is excellent. Their recipes are generally fool-proof and are explained in great detail -- which makes it great for beginning cooks or those who (like me) just like to know exactly why you do things a certain way.

And no, I don't get paid for advertising! I've just found that those resources have opened up a whole new world of cooking for me. :)

Tammy's picture

Thanks for sharing your favorite resources!

I haven't gotten cook books from the library recently... I guess I usually have enough new ones waiting to be tried from other sources! But I do like looking through cook books for new ideas. :)

I haven't been to America's Test Kitchen, either, but maybe I should sometime! I like detailed instructions for recipes! :)

Thanks for your comment!

I usually get mine on line

but I have a few cookbooks that I really like too, one I bought at a Mennonite store, one is a Paula Deen (she's on Food Newtork) and the other my In Laws gave me for Christmas a few years ago, it's the Madison County Cookbook from Madison County, IA. They all three have good home-cooking recipes that are easy to follow and call for items I keep on hand.

Recipe sources

I like recipes that aren't too complicated, too... and call for things I already have. :D I haven't had much experience with Mennonite or Amish cooking either, besides shopping at Mennonite bulk food stores! :)

Recipe Sources...

Hi Tammy, Thanks for such a great web site. This is my first visit and I've already copied off 9 recipes to try! Yes, I do get alot of my recipe ideas on line. I am always trying out new ones to see if we'd like to add them to our personal collection. As each of our daughters get married, their bridal shower gift from Mom (me :-) is a handmade notebook / collection of our family favorite recipes...ones they've grown up with. I've also included many photos of the girls when they were young (often pictured making or eating the listed recipe) so it becomes a family heirloom type recipe book. I love sending them into their new role as homemaker armed with our tried and true recipe collection. Keep up the good work on your site! Diane

Family Recipe Books

Diane, I like your recipe book gift idea!

When I got married, a friend of mine gave me a recipe box with all their favorite recipes. I added my already-started collection (mostly recipes I copied from my mom!) and have been using that box ever since!

My sisters (who were then 8 and 10 years old) helped me copy some of them down, and it always brings a smile to my face when I take out a recipe that's written in an 8-year-old's handwriting! ;)

Thanks for your comment, Diane! I hope you like the recipes you copied off to try! :D

A combinaison

As a wedding gift, my "Mom" while I was away at college made me a recipe book (in a half-sized binder) of tried-and-true recipes. She's a great cook, who does everything from scratch, and has YEARS of experience. If I want a recipe that is sure to be great, I take out that book. =)

Another friend gave me a "Betty Crocker" recipe book that is really nice as well! Some of the recipes use pre-made things, but will also link you to the page to make that from scratch. I like that. That's the reason I don't subscribe to cooking magazines: they always call for pre-made (aka: expensive!) foods. That book not only contains recipes, but also conversion tips, cooking and preserving tips for various meats/vegetables/fruits, etc. It's a great reference!

And, of course, I have my own index-card-box of recipes that I have gathered here and there. Those recipes are always good - they're tested and tried by me! ;-)

I usually get my recipes online when I need to use up something specific. This website, though, I don't consider "online" but almost like "recipes from a friend!" ;-)

This website, though, I don't consider "online" but almost like "recipes from a friend!"

Awww, that's very sweet of you to say, Anne Jisca! I just had to read that part to Joshua :)

I use a combination of everything! I don't really have a recipe box...yet. What I do have is piles of papers and the index cards to organize them. One of these days...

Organizing recipes...

Thanks for commenting, Kim! Copying recipes is one of my least favorite things! It just seems to take so long! :) I'm spoiled, now, because I can just print my recipes off when people ask for them. :)

But that's just another reason why I usually just cut recipes out of magazines. Besides not wanting to keep around extra stuff (like an entire magazine for the sake of 10 recipes!) I'd rather cut out the recipe and just stick it in my box. :)

I get them everywhere...

Magazines, cookbooks (bought and also borrowed from the library, friends, etc), websites, cooking shows, EVERYWHERE! I read cookbooks for fun :)

I really do like recipe sites like this though...at least we know that someone out there has actually cooked the recipe, not created it in a test kitchen and never actually ate it... ;)

I'm going to be trying the fried chicken recipe this week too! :)

Tammy's picture

Fried Chicken

Oh, I do hope you like the fried chicken, Andrea! It is one of Joshua's very favorites! I also like making it because there's a lot of time where it's just cooking and I can go off and do other things :D

Fried chicken

The last time I tried to make it, it was still pink inside. A nice, romantic picnic was ruined by my screaming at my husband, "NO! DON'T EAT IT! ITS STILL PINK!" Needless to say, I've been nervous to make it since then...wish me luck and lots of prayers!

Tammy's picture

Pink fried chicken...

No worries. Have you read the recipe? You don't need any luck with this fried chicken, it's always completely cooked inside! That's why I like it so much! :D

I like to borrow cookbooks

I like to borrow cookbooks from the libraries then scan it to the computer...

recipes

I have a small photo album full of favourite recipes I grew up with or collected over the years. I also have a few in cookbooks too. I love to come here and try new recipes and get ideas. I have a number printed off, just waitng to be tried!

I also think of this as getting recipes from a sweet friend!

everywhere!

If I'm looking for something specific, I check my cookbooks first, then the cut-out recipes/the recipe box, then online (allrecipes usually). Sometimes I just type in whatever I'm looking for in a regular ol' search and check out what comes up (that's how I found this site! I was looking for a spinach tortilla recipe)

Tammy's picture

Welcome, Tiffany! :)

Hi, Tiffany! Thanks for all the fun comments! The spinach tortillas are one of my favorite recipes! :) Looks like you're from NW Ohio, same as we are! :) It's always fun to "see" people from nearby. :)

What are recipes.

I have a degree from Le Cordon Bleu so I know how food works.

My recipes are from all sources

I love getting recipes from all sources: friends, family (espcecially my grandmothers), online, and books.
