I voted for "sometimes", but it was difficult to decide. I haven't always had a garden, and the last 2 years the garden I have done has been located at my parents' house, and we just help with it. So, I do some gardening but I don't have full responsibility for it.
What's really fun, is when people give me their "extras" like squash and lettuce and asparagus and stuff like that! Yum! :D
I agree! My garden is all in pots this year...normally, my folks had more tomatoes than we knew what to do with (as it always goes with tomatoes), but this year, I think I've gotten 3 or 4 so far. Kind of stinks, actually. But there's a huge farm stand about 10 minutes away from our apartment....and I always can find a reason to take a drive at this time of year! :)
When I was a kid my Mom ALWAYS had a garden. It was huge! Growing up we had a fenced in yard so "critters" were never really a problem. But now that I am married with my own house, I have green acres behind my house... which I love!... But we have a herd of deer that live in the woods and sometimes when they are I suppose desperate for food come in the yard. We were just watching them this morning... Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep deer out of a garden?
I have figured that I will keep my "garden" just to pots this year on my deck. Since the deer do not come that close to the house.
Thanks!
Sue
We tried shavings of Irish Spring Soap and that didn't work at all. Electric fence about 1' off the ground was mentioned(I guess they don't like the frequency from it) but I don't think that worked for our friends. We had to finally build a fence (about 7' tall) around my garden space to keep the deer out. The fence has worked great and, with several deer that we see around here, we haven't had one in the garden.
Hope you find something that works!
Last year was the first year I've had a garden myself. My mom had one for a couple years when I was a kid. I was kinda lazy with mine though and decided that I didn't want to pick weeds. Despite it becoming overrun with them, we did pretty good! I'm going to try really hard to do better this year. I love having the veggies and fruit right out in my back yard.
With our 5th child on the way and only one income, it only make sense that we garden. All of our kids are boys and trust me, the bigger they get the more it takes to fill up their tummys. : )
One thing i've learned about gardening is that it doesn't take as much work as people might think and it doesn't need to be "perfect" to provide fresh and free food.
All our kids love to help with it as well picking weeds and veggies. It's something that the whole family enjoys.
I love teaching my kids that a little bit of work can go a long ways.
My older sons like to take note of how much things cost in stores and chuckle to themselves knowing that OURS is "free".
I've even found that if I need time to clear my head or "get over something" a little time out in the garden pulling weeds works wonders for my sanity. : ) Trust me, with all these kids you'll take the "get aways" however they come sometimes. : )

I usually do but last year I thought we might be moving so we pulled up the poles and fence and and gave it to my Mom.So now if we do it we have to start all over. And I do want a garden again so it looks like we are starting all over!We have a very small place so the seeds I bought so far is green onions,Squash,Green Pepper,Lettuce,Garden Beans,Carrots.
It's against our condo rules to grow veggies. But this year I am going to grow some herbs in a pot on my porch. I'm pretty excited about it. Fresh herbs are pretty pricy, but I love them so much more than dried.
I voted "rarely" but that is only because I have not had one since being married. We live in attached housing so we do not have much room. But this year I plan on starting a small one using containers and following advice from Square Foot Gardening.
again if you change the rules. There is so much "save the enviroment" and all that many cities are changing their rules and encouraging Urban gardens. I just read a couple of articles about it.
I voted for never but that is because I never have....I so want to this year but we are moving cross country and unless the house sell in short order we won't be in our new location in time.
We have a small garden every year - tomatoes, pumpkins, gourds, and some herbs. That's it. This year we added beans and watermelons. We'll see how they do. We just planted them yesterday!
I voted for always, but really it's just been every year since I've been married. This is or 4 year for a garden. Does anyone have any ideas for luring pollenators (bees, etc) to your garden? Last year we had TONS of flowers on the plants, but hardly any of them turned into anything. It did a little better after we started to pollenate the flowers ourselves, but not nearly as well as it has in the past. I'd welcome any suggestions! :-)
Thanks!
~Krista
I didn't grow one last summer because I was due with another baby, after canning at 42 weeks pregnant I learned my lesson not to take on too much. This summer I do plan on a small one.
we tried one several years ago, but our growing season was too short. and we have barely enough space for the kiddos to run. i wish we could though. my parents always had a huge one. i try bumming as much canned stuff off of my mom as i can.
I should say I 'try' every year. The best producing garden I had was last fall when I just left the 'Summer' garden alone and let it go. We have had tomatoes and peppers continuously up to this point (here in Texas). My herbs look great! I have dill that is as tall as I am right now. :)
I had one last year and im hoping Washington will give us some better days so I can start one this year too! I cant wait! My adventure is to "try" to grow Watermelon!

Not any more
We had a garden for years but won't have one at this new house. :) No canning anymore, either. I miss it a little bit.

Keeping deer out of garden
Thanks for answering, Lindsey. We've never had deer problems, thankfully!

re-running another poll :)
This one's from 2006, and had 80 votes. :) Thought it'd be fun to see what you all are up to this year as far as gardens go! :)

I plant a small garden pretty much every year.
Another option?
I voted "sometimes," but in actuality, this is the first year I'm going to have my own, real garden. How about a "first timer" choice on the poll? :)
I voted for never but that
