Seeing your grain mill reminds me of a question I have been meaning to ask. Have you ground anything besides wheat in your mill? I am newly gluten free and so I have to use different flours such as rice, corn, bean and sorgum. They are so expensive so I have debated on buying that same grain mill. You do still like yours, correct?
Yes! We purchased the WonderMill grain mill and have been completely satisfied with it. :)
I have ground several things aside from wheat:
I have made brown rice flour, oat flour (using oat groats), corn flour (using "field corn" -- the affordable big dry kernels -- rather than popcorn which is more expensive), and rye flour. I think that may be all I've ground thus far, but everything went through just fine.
The corn flour is finer than corn meal, though I have substituted it in some recipes with success -- and I'd much rather use my fresh corn flour than to purchase corn meal at the grocery store! :)
Those of you who own grain mills, what kind of mill do you have? What are your favorite grains to grind?
By far, my top grains are hard white wheat (makes "bread flour" for our wheat bread) and soft white wheat (makes "pastry flour" for quick breads)!

Tammy & Betsy, I have a
Tammy & Betsy,
I have a Nutrimill and am GF. I have ground corn, rice, beans, millet and sorghum so far. All have turned out wonderfully and it's such a pleasure using fresh flours! I love my mill! :-)
I don't have a mill, but
I don't have a mill, but would love one! I use my vita-mix to grind my grains, and my favorite right now is millet- I make my one-year-old's morning cereal with fresh millet flour- 1/2 cup millet flour to 2 cups boiling water with 1/4 tsp. salt. I let it steam for 30 minutes, mix it with a banana and voila! But the grain mill... mmmm, can't wait! I love freshly ground wheat for my bread.

Ultramill
I have an ultramill, it is not the mill that grinds the finest and I wish I would have gotten the Nutrimill.
I have a nutrimill and love
I have a nutrimill and love it! If I set it to grind more corsely I end up with pretty good corn meal. Mostly I mill hard white wheat for bread and soft white wheat for general baking. I buy 25lb bags through azure standard.
we have a Nutrimill
We have the Nutrimill also, and are very pleased with it. It is not too loud and not too dusty. It is also very easy to clean after your done using it. They are on sale this month too!
We used an older mill for a long time, and while it did a good job....it was unbelievably loud and left everything in the kitchen covered in a fine coating of flour.
We have done oat groats, buckwheat, popcorn, and wheat.
Thanks everyone!
Thanks Tammy and everyone for your input on the mills, it is appreciated! We are on a tight budget but I hope that over time this should pay for itself and hopefully I will get a superior product as well. After reading your comments and doing some research it sounds like the Nutrimill is the way to go.
Oh, and to the commenter above about the millet cereal - wow, I will have to try that! Oatmeal used to be my morning ritual but now I have been cooking a grits and cornmeal mixture instead. (Most oatmeal is cross contaiminated with wheat.) The millet sounds like a nice change of pace. I definately am going to try that.
Tammy, occasionally I have your popcorn and milk breakfast recipe that you posted awhile back. Thank you, thank you for that recipe. It is so suprisingly good, inexpensive and gluten free to boot. Yay! I still can't get my family to try it though. :) Well, thanks again!

NutriMill
i love my Nutrimill but i have never ground anything but wheat. i use prairie gold but recently bought some of the soft white wheat that i'm anxious to try in baking. in the past i have just mixed my ground ww flour in with the white flour with good results.
what kind of corn do you grind for cornmeal? i've heard popcorn is good. i don't know that i use enough cornmeal to even bother.....what do you use cornmeal for other than cornbread?
A tip on grinding your own GF flours
Betsy-
My nieces eat GF and their mom grinds all their flours. Just a thought to keep in mind while you're shopping for a mill: don't buy a used one!! No matter how well you clean it, you will always have some residual wheat flour in the mill that will cross-contaminate your food.
We went GF and casin free for a while, and I really loved millet flour in my breads and I grew up eating whole grain (not ground) millet as a hot cereal. Try grinding some bean flours, too - they make things moist! Sorghum is good, too. Always mix together different flours for baking for best results!
Have fun mill shopping and best wishes as you learn new ways of cooking!
Michelle
Thanks
Thanks for the advice Michelle. I had heard that as well about being unable to clean the mill so we are definately buying new. Too bad as I still make whole wheat bread for the fam. and would love to grind theirs as well. I don't want to buy TWO mills though, lol. Maybe we will have to switch us all to GF?
I have been experimenting with the various grains converting over some my "staple" recipes to gf but have been relying heavily on rice flour as it is the cheapest that I can currently purchase. Tammy's pumpkin, coconut cookies make into great gf cookies btw if you sub out the flours and use ground nuts for the oatmeal. yummy . I will be trying your millet breakfast idea - didn't have the mill yet to try it ground as suggested above. :) Thanks again.
