Almost time!

I'll be busy today finishing up the preparations for Passover (this evening) and a week of unleavened bread! :)

I'm planning to serve a menu similar to this one from last year. Chocolate Caramel Covered Matzos is also an easy and yummy treat! :) I have more unleavened recipes that are special to us (but not yet on this website) that I hope to make throughout the week, as well. :)

Do you have anything special planned for Passover or the week of Unleavened Bread? :)

We're Jewish

So of course we will be having a Seder tonight and tomorrow night. Then a week of unleavened food. I love making chocolate covered matzoh. It's like chocolate covered pretzels. Happy Pesach!

Could you reccommend...

any books/websites that would help a chirstian to have greater understanding of the Jewish holidays? I've been wanting to learn more about the holidays, but wasn't sure where to look for information. Thanks

I recommend "A Family Guide to the iblical Holidays". Here is their website, but you can get it cheaper at Amazon or somewhere similar. http://biblicalholidays.com/feasts.htm
It not only gives you tons of info on the holidays but recipes, crafts, coloring pages and other ideas for each holiday. There is even a home school section. Hope that helps! :)

Jewish Books I like

There are so many books on Judaism out there, I'm not sure which would be the best ones to learn about holidays. You could probably look in your library under "Judaica" and find some. One popular book is "The Jewish Book of Why". There is a second book in that set, too. I also like "To Be A Jew: A Guide to Jewish Observance in Contemporary Life" by Rabbi Hayim Halevy Donin. It doesn't just address the holidays, but also the synagogue, family life, Sabbath, etc. I find it to be an excellent source. But truly, there are so many books out there, that if you are a newbie, I'm sure you would learn from any of them.

Pesach

Hi Tammy,

We too, are Messianic. This year we have invited my family over (who do not celebrate these holidays) and they have given me a tentative yes. I'm really nervous about preparing a big meal, and making it a fun occasion. I really want them to see how great our holidays can be, and I've put a lot of pressure on myself. We also just added a new addition to the family (#4) who is only 7 weeks old. So I am feeling like I'll never get it all done!
Aside from that, my husband will be taking off of work and we will be having lamb, matzo ball soup, horseradish, 2 kinds of flat bread, "colorful" cauliflower, and unleavened brownies for dessert. I'd like another vegetable of some kind but I'm not sure what!
We always hide the Afikomen and have music...and our friends usually come over afterwards and we all have wine and the kids play etc.
So much fun. :)

We live in a historically

We live in a historically Jewish city, so my grocery stores are full of Passover items.

We don't celebrate Jewish holidays, but I'm still going to try your matza recipe! My hubby & kids LOVE all things bread related.

I am making hot cross buns for Good Friday, but those are leavened.

Matzos

I always have wanted to go to a Seder/Passover meal, but have yet to go to one.
I just bought Matzos at the grocery ~ had two big squares for breakfast with butter and tea. I used to do that as a kid. Not Jewish at all, but love the food.

We are celebrating passover

We are celebrating passover for the first time and are looking forward to it. We have the book 'A family guide to Biblical holidays" and have found it very useful in helping us learn how to celebrate Jewish holidays and how it relates to us as Christians.

passover sedar at church

My husband has a ministry (Good News For Israel) and is performing a family style sedar geared to teach children and their families that its passover we celebrate not easter. He will go over the story of Moses and Israel with fun props like frogs, great backround paintings and a real lamb. It should be a great way for us all to remember what God did for Israel and what Jesus did for us by being our "Lamb" who was sacrificed for us! Praise Him.

Matzo balls

I am making the matzo ball soup for supper tonight and am having trouble with the balls coming out right. Is the batter supposed to be so watery? I'm not sure what I did wrong.

Did you cover and chill the batter like the recipe says in the instructions? That always seems to help thicken it up a little (as the matza soaks up more liquid). I usually form mine with two spoons and yes, they are kinda sticky, like a really sticky cookie dough! I drop them in the boiling water and by the time they're done then they're "set" like a dumpling or something. :)

matzo balls

I am going to attempt some Jewish cooking...and I was wondering...Should the matzo balls be stored separately from the soup before serving? Can the leftovers be put in soup in the fridge? I really appreciate the book suggestions on here! I am very interested in learning more about the Messianic Jewish faith and the differences and similarities to my own fundamental Baptist faith. Keeping up with your site, Tammy, has also helped me to find some modest clothing sources and frugality in it's finest. I'm off to make matzo ball soup!!!

You should be able to store the matzoh balls either way

I sometimes store them separately (they can be frozen, too!) or you can put them in the soup (again even frozen in the soup would work).

I usually keep all the leftover matza balls and soup together in a container in the fridge... I treat the matza balls like dumplings or homemade noodles... they hold up just fine! :)

Passover

We actually wrote our own Haggadah this year, and introduced the Miriam's Cup to our Seder.
As for special meals. We have matzah pizza planned, and my family especially loves tuna sandwiches made with matzah. Ours has a different twist though. First I pre-fry our matzah in oil, drain, then to the tuna/mayo mixture we add jalepenos, cheese, and a dash of garlic powder. Then we quick fry the sandwiches in butter. Not real healthy, but, yum, I can't wait.

I have attended seder suppers at various church but this is the first year my husband and I decided to have one at home. It was lovely.

I actually came back to this post to tell you that I made your egg and onion matza recipe and we both loved it. He was so sad when I told him I had eaten the last piece. I don't think we will wait till next spring to make it again.

I made this yesterday, but i was out of onion powder so I substituted garlic powder. I hope that's kosher because I shared some with my Jewish friends!!! I'm nervous to see what they think of it.
