Okay, so, I know I really wow-ed a lot of you with the first recipe in my mini-series, "Breakfasts from my childhood". I'm sure a fair number of you are going to say "How Strange." over this recipe, as well, but hey, I liked it a lot as a kid! :)
Have any of you ever heard of Milk Toast? At least, that's what my mom called it. It's basically a slice of toast soaked with milk and sprinkled with sugar, eaten with a spoon. I had Milk Toast for breakfast on a fairly regular basis as a child, at least once or twice a month. I liked it! (No, my mom didn't monitor how much sugar I put on.) ;)
So, I'm ready. If you've ever heard of having Milk Toast for breakfast, leave me a comment! Surely it's a real breakfast food! :)

Okay, first the popcorn
Okay, first the popcorn cereal now this. I am going to have to try this; if only because, after I read about popcorn cereal, I could find myself living off popcorn cereal. Is this going to be another thing that I am going to love so much that I won't be able to do anything but eat it at every meal for the next month?
Yum
I've had this before. :) But mostly on pancakes...my Grandma says that's the way the old Finnish people ate them (and they ate them that way in her house)

I have heard of it, but never eaten it myself. In the book The Shrewd Christian (kind of similar to a Dave Ramsey book), the author talks about his dad fixing that for dinner when he was little and he loved it!
milk toast
i have had this-although we also put cinimin on it and bake it at 300 for about 8 minutes!!
My Grandma used to fix us
My Grandma used to fix us milk toast if we didn't feel good. She warmed the milk, but no sugar in ours. Bummer! I need to fix it for my kids sometime, but I can just imagine the looks...still...it brings back great memories. :)
I've heard of it
My step-grandfather used to make this for my mom when she was growing up and my mom hated it so much that she said she would never make us try it.
Now I have an aversion to even trying mushy toast, but I may try it on my kids to see if they like it.
Yup, my mom used to make
Yup, my mom used to make this for us too. The idea for milk toast goes along well with your post about dried out bread. If you do have dried bread, now you know what to do with it!
WE used to tear up a piece
WE used to tear up a piece of bread and eat it with chocolate milk poured over top or mik and sugar so I guess it's very similar to yours!!!!I LOVED it as a child!!

milk toast
never ate it, never heard of anyone who did, but Im from the south, it would seem to me that it would leave you hungry, I like something that would fill you up more, but it sounds sweet.
I've never heard of this,
I've never heard of this, but I bet my husband would love it!
Memories
We used to have milk toast for breakfast all the time. But, my mom buttered the bread, warmed the milk and put salt and pepper on it.
I haven't tried the popcorn cereal (I only have microwave 'movie theater' popcorn in the house right at the moment and I thought it would be gross), but when you posted the photo it reminded me of puffed rice. I bet it is good.
No milk toast but I did eat
No milk toast but I did eat sugar sandwiches when I was little. Two pieces of white bread, slathered with margarine (I didn't taste butter til I was an adult) and sprinked liberally with sugar. You have to smash it down a bit to keep it together.
Hilarious!
My DH's parents have this all the time. Are you sure you weren't raised Mennonite? LOL. Those of us who married into this milk-based family laugh... the Millers will put ANYTHING into a bowl of milk and call it a meal! We have a good laugh over this issue on vacation with the whole family. They serve various foods in bowls of milk for DINNER too (pasta, rivels, potatoes, breads, fruit)! The way I was raised, the only reason milk should be in a bowl was for breakfast... IF THAT LOL.
Thanks for the fun breakfast idea. My boys will probably love it... adopted or not, they are Mennonite Millers to the core :-)
Tammy, your food is from the
Tammy, your food is from the oldie days.;-) No, really, I have been reading old issues of Reminisce magazine with my siblings and first there was this food memory of this girl's father making popcorn (with bacon grease and salt!) and then pouring milk over it. And then there was another little story about someone telling their father milk toast was her favorite food. He was surprised because they only gave it to her when she was sick with a sore throat, but that morning they all had milk toast for breakfast. Anyway, it was very Tammy-ish.;-)

Nothing wrong with the way people ate long ago!!
Things tend to come full circle and trends in eating are no different. Fashions always come back, for instance. I think people are really starting to realize that simple really is better!!
I've never heard of this!
I have to admit this doesn't sound too appetizing to me as an adult. But I can definitely see a kid liking it.
I also agree with some other posters that some of your recipes are 'vintage'. But I like it. I didn't learn anything about cooking from my mother or grandmother, so I've learned a few classic things from you :-) I am very greatful for all your original (pre-campbell soup/hamburger helper/etc) recipes.
Cinnamon Toast!
We would eat 'Cinnamon Toast' all the time. Its pretty similar to milk toast. We would make toast butter it, sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar, then tear it up and eat with milk. Most of the time, we would just eat the cinnamon toast on the way to the bus stop. It is a great to go food.
I think sometimes when we ate it as cereal we wouldn't use butter, but its been so long that I can't remember. We mostly ate it on the way out the door, when you are one of 6 kids mornings are pretty rushed, and sometimes the milk runs low and was saved for the little kids since we got milk at snacktime in school. Do they even have snacktime anymore?
Rebecca
Thank you!
You all are the BEST!! :)
I was raised almost-Mennonite. ;) I guess I haven't shown a picture of my parents online, have I? :)
Now, I'm getting excited about sharing the next recipe in this series!! :D
no here
No, I haven't heard of it.... I wonder what your next recipe will be!! ~Tanya - mama to 5 :)
Graveyard stew...
Okay, this sounds creepy, I know. But we called warm milk with an egg cooked into it poured over toast, graveyard stew. I don't know why?! Oh, and salt and peppered. Still like it today, but have never made it for my family, it is just to weird. Shawn
Milk Toast
My mom still eats milk toast and really loves it. I did not care for it.........probably since I STILL do not like milk. Go figure. LOL
I mentioned popcorn cereal to my hubby who said absolutely no. I will have some grands with us this summer and I bet they like it.
We LOVE milk toast
Ah, Tammy! Now you are talking! I have eating milk toast since I was a very small girl and I am raising my six children on it, too: we make two slices of homemade bread toast, buttered and sprinkled separately with white sugar and cinnamon. Then we pour hot milk into the bowl--the best way is to pour it down the side and let it seep up into the toast from the bottom so the top is buttery and crusty-sweet. It is practically heaven on earth.
This sort of food comes from the south, I believe, along with other "delicacies" I enjoyed as a child: creamed rice, fried cornmeal mush, biscuits and gravy, creamed corn on toast, fried green tomatoes and zucchini. Also a wonderful summer supper of torn-up homemade white bread in a bowl with cubed colby cheese, all doused with fresh milk. And a little pile of salt on the table next to my bowl for a nice, crisp green onion to dip into!
Looking forward to the rest of this series!
Roz, who now lives in Alberta, Canada where decent people DO NOT eat this way. :)
Roz, how neat!! I haven't
Roz, how neat!! I haven't heard of several of those foods. Funny how people will turn their noses up at the "simple" way of eating that many (poorer) folks had for so many years... :)
No milk toast but...
this is soooo going on the breakfast menu!
I am going to try this
I am going to try this tonight! It sounds yummy! Has anyone heard of milk and crackers? My husband (age 30) ate this growing up and every once and a while gets a craving for it. Now, I'll try the toast, but there's no way I'm going to eat milk and crackers and like it! I do live in the south.
Milk & crackers
I haven't heard of milk and crackers... although as a child I put crumbled saltines in applesauce! That was my own invention, not my mom's though. ;)
My mother fed us milk toast
My mother fed us milk toast when we were ill. Buttered the toast and sprinkled it with sugar and cinnamon then pour on warm milk. Always made us feel better. I am from Kansas.
Pussycat Soup
We used to have something like this, but with plain bread, not toasted. We called it "Pussycat Soup".
How about . . .
. . . coffee soup? My mom used to have crackers with coffee poured over them. Neither soggy crackers (especially made so with coffee) nor soggy bread sound very appetizing to me.
Coffee soup!
I have heard of coffee soup!!! But my parents never served it to us. We heard about it from talking to an Amish man in Ohio!
I was skeptical, I have a
I was skeptical, I have a very picky 5 year old despite all my efforts. This morning I offered it to him and he agreed. I cut the toast into squares and put them in a cereal bowl, spinkled with sugar and poured on milk. He tasted, he liked and he ate it all up. Thank you. Now if we could get him that excited about supper.

milk toast
I tried this for the first time this morning, I used cinnamon sugar and 2 pieces of toast, it was good! I'll eat it again now that I know of it. Also, Im from the south and have never heard of this from anyone.
Memories of my childhood!
My mom used to make this for us when we were sick, too!! I loved it as a child...buttered toast, sugar, and warm milk, what's not to love? I've always thought it was a Midwest thing, since I was born in Missouri.
milk toast
My mom made milk toast for us too! I grew up in the 50's, and have never heard of anyone else eating this. However, we never put sugar on it. In fact, in my memory it was more salty than sweet. I've never been able to duplicate this. Memory tells me that the toast stayed somewhat crisp. When I've tried to make it, the toast is always soggy and yukky. Maybe a good homemake bread would make a difference!
Milk Toast
I haven't thought of milk toast in years! My mom used to make this for me in the '50s. I loved it then, but you wouldn't catch me eating it today. I can't stand milk. I love your blog and have a huge amount of admiration for you -- the way you're raising your children, all the cooking you do, the love you have for your husband, housekeeping...
I have heard of it, but
I have heard of it, but never eaten it myself. In the book The Shrewd Christian (kind of similar to a Dave Ramsey book), the author talks about his dad fixing that for dinner when he was little and he loved it!
heard of cornbread and buttermilk
My grandparents loved eating leftover cornbread and buttermilk. Ack. They probably ate it for many meals during the Great Depression, and ever so often my grandpa would get hungry for it and make him some, and make mine with 'sweet milk'- just regular milk.
We're from Texas.
buttermilk and cornbread
thats good stuff! Im from Georgia
Milk Toast
I grew up eating milk toast too! I don't hear about too many people eating it, and I don't tell too many people that I eat it because most people think it sounds gross. The only difference is we salted ours. It was toast with butter, and milk poured over, and then salted. Yum! I still crave it once in awhile but I can't eat it on a regular basis because I get hungry (even when I use whole wheat bread) within a couple hours after eating it. However, I like it better with white bread.
