Delicious homemade granola, full of flavor, fiber, and nutrition

10 cups

6 c rolled oats
1/2 c brown sugar
3/4 c wheat germ
1/2 c flaked coconut
1/4 c sesame seeds
1 c chopped walnuts, almonds,  pecans, golden flax seeds, or raw sunflower seeds
1/2 c nonfat dry milk
2/3 c honey
2/3 c vegetable oil
2 T water (if I don't have the dry milk, I just use milk instead of water here)
1 1/2 t vanilla
1 c raisins

1. In a large bowl combine oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, coconut, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and nonfat dry milk.

2. Combine honey, oil, water, and vanilla. Add to oat mixture and mix thoroughly.

3. Turn into two large shallow greased baking pans or cookie sheets. Heat in 300 degree oven for 30-40 minutes or until lightly toasted. Stir twice during heating.

4. Let cool for 15 minutes after removing from the oven and then stir again. Store in tightly sealed container. Add raisins before serving if desired.

Homemade granola

Granola will be "wet" even when it is done baking. It doesn't dry out or become crispy until it is cooling. So don't worry if it looks like it didn't turn out!

If stored in a sealed container or bag, away from sunlight or humidity, your granola will last a number of weeks. Granola may also be frozen for longer storage.

This granola is my top choice of breakfast cereals! It is easy and relatively inexpensive to make, and tastes delicious! I eat about one cup of this cereal with milk in the morning, and I know I won't be starving before it's lunchtime. I like to experiment and add new things. I usually use almonds, raw sunflower seeds, and golden flax seeds in mine. I give this recipe 10/10.

yummy & good for you
So yummy and good for you! Delicious as a crunchy snack or as a breakfast cereal. It is really filling too. I did not use sesame seeds because my husband cant have them. I had never purchased wheat germ before, so that was new and very likeable. We are trying to increase our fiber and this fits the bill without all the added junk that goes along with store bought granola. Thank you Tammy.

It's like a hug for your tummy
This granola is great! We try to be high-fiber and this granola will be wonderful. Homemade is always best and I think this will be the answer to my cereal addiction woes. Terrific!

Husband approved
My husband says this is the best granola he has ever eaten! I don't have honey, so I've been using pancake syrup, and while it's not as healthy, I really like the maple flavor the syrup gives it! I also add chocolate chips once it's cooled...yummy!

delicious!
I made a half batch of this granola today for my husband to take away with him. I left out the brown sugar (we cut out as much sugar as possible here) as well as the coconut as I had none in. We used olive oil, local honey, walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, blueberries and sour cherries. It turned out so tasty! I ate some as soon as it was cool and I know that my husband will love it too. Now I know I can leave out the sugar I will be making a big BIG batch! Thanks, Tammy :o)

Two Spoons Up
I was the recipient of two bags of Tammy's granola. Opening the package, it smelled DIVINE and tasted even better. My husband, my boys, and I devoured both packages by the handful (oh, are we supposed to eat it in a bowl with milk, heehee). We say YUM.

Yum!
I made this yesterday afternoon and as soon as it was done Malachi (15 months) and I started snacking on it.:-P Eventually I willed myself to put it away but it left me looking forward to breakfast very much! We had it this morning with milk and it was so tasty and filling. The things I did differently: --I didn't have wheat germ so I used flax meal -- I unintentionally added too much vanilla: I was using concentrated vanilla extract so you are supposed to halve the amount you put in but I forgot. So it smelled very honey and vanill-y while baking and it was heavenly. I would definitely add that much again.:-D -- I also had to leave sesame seeds out since I didn't have any. We added slivered almonds and dried cranberries. Despite the warning that it won't dry until cooling I thought that I surely hadn't cooked it long enough because it seemed so wet when I took it out of the oven. But it turned crispy and delicious so quickly that I didn't have long to worry. The two "ick factors" of past homemade granolas I've consumed have been that they can be bland or overly oily or both. This had none of those problems. I asked Malachi what he thought of it and he said, "MMM! MMMMMMMMMMM!" while nodding his head emphatically so I think he gives it a 10, too.;-)

Great staple and perfect for experimentation (10/10)
I am a big oats fan. I thoroughly enjoy oatmeal (even plain!) and my mouth salivates uncontrollably with anticipation at the mere thought of granola.

As for this recipe, it is fabulous. It has a nutty flavor and a great texture, and best of all it is very, very cheap compared to the storebought stuff--and doesn't have all the artificial additives either. It goes great on yogart, with milk as cereal, or as a snack. And it is perfect for experimentation. Add extra coconut, raisins, etc... or make it into a trailmix by adding nuts, chocolate chips (or carob), M&Ms, etc. This recipe is well worth the effort to make.
