Random stuff...

Yom Kippur always feels like one of the longest days of the year to me... I'm so glad it's over! I am not as joyful about fasting as Joshua seems to be -- he is definitely a good example to me! :)

My brain is a little fried, so here are a few tidbits from the past couple of days:

--We're still battling our gnat infestation. I put bleach down the drains and set out lots of traps. We moved the box of unripe pears to the garage, and my compost bucket is outside the back door instead of in the kitchen. I'm really hoping things are under control before we have guests this weekend! Gnats are just plain gross!!

--At Aldi's this week we came across a mountain of free (over-ripe) bananas! We put some in the dehydrator, froze a few, and gave about 30 pounds away. Free food is such a blessing! the boys and I love to snack on the partially dried, hot, chewy, flexible bananas they dry!

--I stepped on the scale today and saw that I have now lost 20 pounds! This is amazing to me, since I have trouble keeping motivated. I feel so much better than I did 5 months ago.

--We're having company tomorrow for lunch, and I'm serving spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, veggies, and some kind of dessert (maybe pudding?).

--We're also borrowing a tent tomorrow from one of my brothers. The boys and I are looking forward to sleeping outside at least one night in celebration of Sukkot next week, and we've even invited friends to our "campout"! (The tent has two rooms.) It should be quite an experience!

--Have you seen the deal at Shutterfly? Fifty free photos and free shipping too! I signed up last week and my 50 photos came in the mail just a few days later!

I'm not sure if this will repell gnats---I think it would. It' called Cedarcide and we got some for the small black ant infestation we have---We have drought conditions here in Fl and they come in for the water. Anyway, it is non toxic (of course you don't want to swallow a mouthful of it or get it in your eyes) We wiped down our countertops and sinks and then mopped with it--let it air dry for a few minutes and viola, I haven't seen an ant in a week! We first heard about this stuff for our dogs instead of advantage.

Awesome about the bananas! I've never found a deal on bananas, but I hope I do someday. :)

Congratulations on the weight loss too! Isn't it amazing how much better you feel when you're not hauling weight around? Even a small amount of weight loss like 5 pounds always feels great to me.

My grocery store just throws old bananas away. I will often ask if they have any old ones that I can buy. They bag up tons of them, and mark the bags at .69 each. I let them get good and squishy, then peel and freeze them on cookie sheets. After they are frozen, I break them into chunks and store in bags or containers. I use them to sweeten our smooothies or to make banana bread.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday. I have to say that this was the easiest fast for me yet, and also the most spiritual. Isn't God's calendar awesome??!!

Thank you for the link to Shutterfly. I have a ton of photos taken with my digital camera at a recent concert and didn't feel like shelling out 19 cents for each of the 140+ pictures. Atleast this will knock down the price considerably.

Hi, Tammy.

Try the wine in a small bowl (custard cup) works well. I have tons of gants in my house but they are all swimming in the wine!!

I have tried everything too until I heard about the wine.

A couple of weeks ago we were having a horrible time with gnats. Someone my husband works with recommended fly strips. They worked beautifully. I didn't have much luck with the traps.

That is alot of weight to lose....good for you!
I think that gnats end up coming with this time of year with fruit canning and all, but we are keeping them under control here.

You inspired me, yet again, to make meatballs ahead and freeze them.
Yesterday it only took me an hour to make 230 meatballs, total!
I mixed it all up ( and using oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs) used a small ice cream scoop for a super fast way ( although not as pretty) and baked 3 trays in the oven and then cooked some in sauce for our dinner that night of pasta, garlic bread and a green salad!
You rock my world Tammy! ( and my husband's too!)
I used the new ziploc bags with the pump to remove the air- I never tried them before so we will see how they work!

While it's great that you got free banana's..I sure hope you didn't take them all as I'm sure there are others in your community who could have used them.

I didn't take all of the bananas, and of the ones we took, we gave away about half to someone else who could use them. :)

The cashier actually thanked me for taking bananas... she has said in the past that she hates throwing them away. :(

Actually, it's interesting to see just how many people walk right past a pile of free over-ripe bananas! We did all of our grocery shopping, went out and loaded the car, and then went back in and got a cart full of bananas. I didn't see anyone else carrying free bananas to the checkout...

The bananas were pretty ripe and needed to be used pretty much ASAP... and many had bad spots or a smashed banana in the bunch. Joshua commented to me on the timing of the free food (we were getting ready to celebrate Yom Kippur -- actually the dehydrator filled our house with a banana smell the whole day while we fasted! lol) but I reminded him that free food doesn't usually come at the "perfect" time... the way to get food when *we* want it is to buy it. ;)

It is nice to consider the poor, but unfortunately, most folks have higher priced taste that we do, and wouldn't touch 'old' fruit anyway.

I love over-ripe bananas. Most grocery stores have to throw them away because people won't take them. The produce guy at my local store tells me to just ask whenever I want him to bag up the old bananas. I pay about .70 for a huge bag of them. :)

A friend of mine makes the most wonderful, moist banana bread. She once told me that the secret is to get the bananas as ripe as possible...until they are all black and squooshie. They basically ferment, and are really sweet and even effervescent :o

I freeze them and use them to sweeten our smoothies.

Tammy,

Are you dealing with gnats or fruitflies? It sounds like it might be fruitflies, since they're attracted to the fruit/veggie/food type items.

Here's a home fruitfly catcher. Pour some apple cider vinegar in a small shallow bowl (custard cups, or some similar size). Add just a few drops of commercial dishwashing liquid (Dawn, Joy, Palmolive, etc., but not the more natural versions). Place the bowl somewhere near the fruitfly infestation area. The flies are attracted to the vinegar and the dishsoap kills them. You should see lots of tiny little dead fruitflies in your vinegar by the next morning.

Also, you might consider putting a toad in a cage near the fruitflies and let him do his job :-)

Gnats, fruit flies, what's the difference? :) I thought they were the same thing, just two different names! But now I see from Google that gnats bite humans, and fruit flies aren't the same thing, although they look similar (?). :)

We make similar traps, but with red wine vinegar. :)

Tammy,

I see you already posted about the vinegar and dish soap. I'm a little behind . . .
