Just another strange menu combo

After receiving numerous comments saying that I come up with strange menu combinations, I decided to scrutinize our plates more closely as I was snapping my pictures.

And guess what? We do eat some pretty weird combinations of food. But it's not me! Seriously. I just heat up whatever's in the fridge.

Like today. Joshua volunteered to grill some chicken, smother it in BBQ sauce, and slow cook it. I love BBQ sauce, so I wasn't going to argue about that idea!

And then there was the cantaloupe -- the leftover half from a couple days ago. Corn on the cob that was a gift from our neighbor, and green beans from my mom's garden. I can't just let this food go bad!

It seems that people's eating styles vary as much as people themselves do -- which isn't surprising. ;) A long time ago I thought that everyone ate the way we did. Ha! We're pretty boring folks compared to some of you!

Those of you who eat much differently from us -- I'd love it if you described what your menus/food is like!

And is there anything I've posted that was a perfectly normal food to me but when you saw it you said "Yuck!!"?! I'm guessing this has happened and everyone was too kind to tell me that I was the only person who thought it looked yummy! ;)

Not Weird

Tammy,
I've never thought that your menus are strange or weird.

I would say though, what does it really matter? You are feeding your family healthy food that is from scratch. That's what is important!

Lyn :)

combinations

Well, that is not such a strange combo to me. This summer Cracker Barrel restaurants offered as a special Barbecue Chicken Breast with corn on the cob, then you could choose another vegetable.
As for the cantaloupe, when my grand-daddy was still alive and we grew our big gardens, every meal had a plate of sliced tomatoes, sliced cucumbers and usually sliced cantaloupe. It is my favorite way to eat.

Inspiration

Hi Tammy!
I find your photos / menus so inspiring because you use up all the things you have on hand, and I am always forgetting to do this. I think adding so many "different" ingredients to the one plate makes it a lot more fun!
Emma.

I actually found it quite

I actually found it quite rude to suggest that your combinations were unusual - it's food! It's all delicious. But you're certainly a good sport about it and that's all that matters. :)

casserole

Hi Tammy. I think this is the first time i have commented on your blog but Ive been reading and using your recipes for at least 6 months! Your great! Anyhow...I have a hard time with casseroles... they are simple and might even look good but I just am never satisfied. Not a casserole person I guess! Keep posting recipes.

Menus

I do not think your menus are weird. You are a great cook with fresh, balanced meals! I believe that we all need to get back to basics and eating the produce in season! Keep up the great work!

Looks good to me!

That looks very normal--seasonal eating. We often have fruit at meals. :-)

Don't matter

Unless we are having company, I do make what I am hungrey for. I do watch startches and stuff, but I do have some werid carvings sometimes for no reason. As long as I have at least one veggie and a meat, who cares.

Normal menus ;)

Tammy, this looks like a perfectly wonderful meal! One I would have eaten countless times as a child or even now. ;)
With 9 kids, my mom made huge batches of things but RARELY ever froze anything so we'd be eating a casserole or lasagna forever!!! On Saturday for lunch (our typical "buffet of leftovers" day) us kids could put together any combination we wanted. Sometimes my brothers would eat a sloppy joe, a turkey and gravy sandwich, cabbage casserole and corn - I mean, the combinations were anyone's guess! :) It's all about using what you have and trying to eat healthy - and from the looks of that plate, you are doing quite well! :) No need to apologize; I think the Lord is blessed by your ability to use things up and be grateful for what you have. ;)

Menus

We eat a lot of weird food combinations too. I think that happens with leftovers. I just don't usually take pictures of them. I will be honest here though. The post you did on using scrambled eggs for egg salad sounded terrible to me. I just couldn't do that. The texture would be all wrong as far as I am concerned. But if it works for you that is great. Each family and person has different tastes and that is fine. It keeps it all interesting.

I would eat any of that....

but I wouldn't have it all on one plate! The fruit would definitely have it's own bowl, at least! :D Sometimes we HAVE to eat what's in the house, even if it's a weird combination of stuff. That's OK!!!

LOL! Can you tell I don't have a dishwasher and my 4-year-old hasn't been taught to wash dishes yet? ;)

You eat what you like... at least we do.

I don't find your meals strange. I just think people eat what they like.
Also people eat differently depending on where you live. I take from your recipes the general idea and then change it to what my family would like. Example. Living in the east I would never use cottage cheese in a recipe as you would, I would use Ricotta cheese... But maybe you do not have Ricotta cheese available in your area. So you use what you have.

Have a nice weekend!

That plate of food looks

That plate of food looks dandy to me. What I find unusual is the stuff you combine with pizza. When we have pizza that's all we have unless I get the impression that the kids are really hungry then we have a salad with it or just some veggies for dipping.

Now if we're having a YO-YO (you're on your own) night then anything goes. Whatever is in the fridge is warmed up and ate. :) I think everybody eats things that are unusual to others.

Lol! :) Joshua is really big on having veggies with every meal... even pizza! My mom always made pizza and a green salad, but we usually have at least a couple sides (veggies, fruit, etc.) with our pizza... I guess I am used to it now! :) Although I still like pizza well enough to just eat pizza for a whole meal... :)

Such Beautiful Colors!!

Tammy,
Just look at the plate of food! It is so pleasing to the eye. I imagine that the foods were delicious, too. My family likes many of the foods you feature and I so appreciate your photographing them for us.

I could definitely use some help in picking out melons. When I pluck them from the garden, they are not ready, eeek!

If what you eat is weird, well, keep on doing it.

Thanks for the Kitchen Tip Tuesdays as well.
Peace,
Lynne in NC

Strangeness

"Strange" is relative...

I have yet to see anything strange about any of your food. But, maybe that is because I am strange...

;-)

Challenging!

I have found your meal/menu ideas challenging. How? They've challenged me to add MORE veggies to my meals. I usually think of just doing one veggie. But they're so good for you, why not have 2-3 different kinds?! Thanks! =)

Me too

It all seems perfectly normal to me too. We almost always have veggies and fruit regardless of what else we're having.

However, when I was planning menus for a large family get together this summer (which has a lot of its own traditions), I had a hard time making sure that the food seemed "normal" enough for everybody else and was reminded that the way we eat at our house is not exactly normal in our society. Most of it did go over pretty well in the end.

Definately not strange...

Tammy--you go not eat weird!! I think it is important to have well balanced meals.

I think in America it is looked at as strange to not see meat take "center-stage", what I mean is, that it looks like your meat is just another side like everything else, and that's okay!!! (the american diabetes association says that we should eat 1/4 starch, 1/4 protein, and 1/2 fruits/veggies: http://tinyurl.com/3up74 )

One thing that we do in our house, is eat cottage cheese as a side--and I have never seen your family do this-- so *I* must be strange!! Sometimes we have mandarin oranges, or pineapple on the cottage cheese..or other times we will eat yogurt with cut-up fruit...so I don't find anything you put together as strange...except like pp said, I guess we usually don't add a side veggie with pizza, unless it's a salad.

We love cottage cheese!

We really do enjoy cottage cheese... but someone in our home is lactose intolerant and cottage cheese is quite offensive to the condition. Growing up I would eat it with canned pears and I always loved it in red sauces and lasagna. I even used to take it to work in a small container. I *love* cottage cheese. It just doesn't love me anymore :(

And you are right about portion volume. People get really wonky, and unhealthy, ideas for "diets." The bottom line is balanced nutrition and appropriate portion sizes. You need the vitamins, minerals, fiber, bulk, etc that veggies and fruits offer. One thing we have noticed is by eating the right amount of veggies we stay full longer and it displaces high caloric foods. We still eat yummy chicken and steak--even a grilled burger here and there--but we have really shifted our focus to include more volume in veggies and fruits. We both like veggies and such (Tammy more than I, but I discipline myself) and have found after the initial "shock" that eating 2 cups of veggies at a meal is GREAT! They taste great, they feel great, and they do wonders for my body. I enjoy eating 4-6oz. of meat and then filling up on juicy fruits and veggies. Moderation is good and taking the approach of not what we eat, but how we eat it, has made a big difference.

As for Pizza... yeah, I could ONLY eat pizza... and I have :P But pizza is by volume a lot of starch, carbs, and fat. It has protien and some veggies and what not, but by volume it isn't balanced enough IMO. Not that I don't enjoy indulging in pizza! As for salads, we do them sometimes but I don't personally like dressings or bitter herbs much. It can be a lot of work to make a good salad with all the healthy trimmings (lettuce with diced/sliced bell peppers, carrots, celery, peas, onions, spinach, etc) and it doesn't satisfy my much... although tossing in some grilled chicken or boiled eggs, some shredded cheese, some croutons, sunflower seeds, etc and my tune changes. But it is a lot of work, not quite filling for me, and makes a better side. But that is a lot of work for a side dish that doesn't last long. And if I had to choose, I personally would take a few cups of peas, beans, carrots, corn, etc over the same volume in lettuce with some dressing.

Anyhow, Tammy does a good job of making healthy food we all like (the kids LOVE veggies) and being resourceful at the same time. It is a miracle what she does with our food budget, sometimes I wonder if she is pulling food out of empty baskets ;)

I dont think your combos are

I dont think your combos are strange. I wish I could get by with serving 2 veggies at a meal and fresh fruit. For my family they want a pasta, rice, or potato with each meal and keep the green stuff to a minimum....lol. I still serve the green though.

Your Eating Combinations

Your eating combinations are a reflection of the idea that you eat what is on hand and don't waste. When I grew up we did eat a lot of leftovers, but we weren't as disciplined about not wasting the bounty the Lord provided. Now that I have my own family and am a stay at home mom, making the most of what we have is always the goal!!! Congrats on using the Lords blessings to the fullest and reminding others to do the same no matter how strange the combination. It's all going the same place anyway!!!

Your food always looks as wonderful as I am sure it tastes!

Tammy:
I think every recipe you make looks wonderful and I made a few of yours as well and they are all excellent. Who wouldn't want a nice smorgasboard at dinnertime???

I haven't seen any 'weird'

I haven't seen any 'weird' combos.
I HAVE seen them at my own house though! LOL

Your meals seem perfectly

Your meals seem perfectly fine to me. I have never thought they were strange. We eat simply and healthy here... :)

~Tanya - mama to 5 :)

not me

Your plate looks just like some of ours and many MANY that I've seen in 'old-timers' houses. They ate what they had from the garden all summer.

My kids used to go to their great-grandmothers and ask for 'corn and green beans'. She would even play a game with them sometime and ask them what they wanted to eat....it was the same every time, lol.

When she had them on hand, she'd slice tomatoes and cantaloupe and put on the table too. (She also had a grape vine that I made jelly from one year, fun fun!)She had horse apples that she'd fry too.

I'm with Joshua...pass the veggies. I'm weird that way too. I just like to know the kiddies are gettin' all the vitamins that I can stuff in them!:-) But I do serve it beside the pizza more often than on it ;-)
-Donna-
p.s.
I'm lookin' at your plate, wondering if I can duplicate it for lunch...hmmmmm

The only thing that looks weird to me...

...is that it looks like you cook your green beans a bit longer than I would. We like them still bright green and crunchy.

We don't usually do much in the way of side dishes. It's usually more of a veggies & protein in sauce over starch. And probably 2/3 of our meals are eaten in bowls, not plates.

Colorful!

Tammy, I think this meal photos is fantastic! The more color on the plate, the healthier it is!
We would totally eat something like this, and often do (minus the chicken, of course, but maybe tofu or legumes as a sub)!
Besides, who cares what we think of your food. You are feeding your family the best you know how with what you have available. Obviously we keep coming back to look at more...right? *grin*

Dana

yes but..

the way you eat does seem weird to me ... but I would never say anything, just because that is the wonderfull thing about different people and cultures ...
In France, we would have "un féculent" like potatoes or pasta or rice ... and we would eat the cantaloup for dessert or before the main meal.
We do find people from the USA eat strange ... not your family!!

Only a couple of times...

There were only a couple of times that I noted the combinations being unusual-but not unappealing. Just that I wouldn't have thought to put those specific things together. But really, since I've been reading your blog, I've noticed that I've begun to put together some unusual combinations too. I guess I figured that if Tammy can do it, so can I. ;-)

I think your meal

I think your meal combinations are great! I certainly wish we had so much fresh produce at our disposal! I love that you eat in season. And, like someone else said, that your meat isn't "center stage"... ours isn't either. I have always felt that meat should be more of a condiment, except for the rare steak dinner. ;)

~Elizabeth in Alaska

P.S. I need to figure out why I can never stay logged in on your site... it must be my computer!

looks normal!

I think today's combination looks very normal! I think some of your combos have looked a bit odd (not in a bad way, just not what I would choose or serve) to me simply because we eat far less starches. We usually have peas OR potatoes OR corn OR bread along with a veggie and protein. Occasionally, we might have two of those items, but rarely at the same meal. Also, we don't eat anything else with pizza regularly, and when we do, it's simply salad.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way you eat if it suits your family! I daresay it's much healthier than most of the population eats.

To me, that combo is

To me, that combo is well-rounded, fresh in season and totally normal. That's the way we should all eat really: two veggies, fruit and some protein. Fresh ansd simple. That's the way I grew up eating, but my husband's family would eat a casserole and maybe a side dish like jello salad.

I remember a friend of mine eating with my family once when we had spaghetti. First, she was surprised we didn't eat a huge plate or bowl of it. . . we just filled a part of our plates. Second, we always had corn and salad on the plate too. That's just how we always had spaghetti. With corn!

I enjoy your posts because the food is real family food.

well I do the same thing.

well I do the same thing. Just heat up and try to use up and if the leftovers aren't enough I end up serving fruit with it etc.
Not so strange:)
Tereza

Fruit on the plate

We put fruit on our plates too. I always thought kids would eat fruit more often if it was served with dinner. It is a better choice than say more starches or meats. If I leave it for dessert is not as appealing to them. I learned this from the Duggars. :)
God Bless,
Michele

You're meals look good, but

You're meals look good, but I guess one thing I noticed is that you eat fruit with your main meal. We never have fruit at lunch, but always at breakfast and supper. And pizza always has veggies on it, I doubt pizza would be pizza without lots of veggies on it! But each family has different traditions of how they eat. And green beans stay green and crunchy and just boiled for no more than five minutes. :)

I think it looks good!

I'd eat it! Most of your meals look like the kind I make. Some kind of main dish, some veggies, and maybe bread.

Brittany

Much different taste, but perfectly normal.

You asked about weird food combos from others...we often have naan (an indian flat bread) with Vietnamese stew that I make. Both my husband and I (and our son who when he was first eating solid food wouldn't touch chicken without curry powder) love Indian and Asian cuisine - we do whatever we can to make it affordable, including having a Thai holy basil plant in the house. The combinations we come up with to make complete meals are often mismatched - but with the same intent as you to not let the food go to waste. Other people might think we are weird, but at least my family always has healthy meals that I made.
