The Strange Menu![]() You know how some foods really go together? Like lasagna and garlic bread. Or hot soup and homemade bread... Well, this meal did not go together at all. I guess sometimes when you're just eating what's in the fridge, you come up with strange menus. I had some cabbage from my mom, so I made fried cabbage. I sliced up some fresh tomatoes, and made a veggie omelet. ![]() Oh, and we had leftover soup on the side. (Soup recipe coming this week... I hope!) Joshua looked the food over and said, "I hope you don't put pictures of this on your blog. People will think you're pregnant or something." Nope, not pregnant. And this was definitely not a menu I plan to repeat in the future! :) What's your strangest food combination -- that you love? :) I like ketchup on my fried potatoes, but that's not weird -- that's how I grew up eating them. As a child I also liked jam on my scrambled eggs. It's not too bad... :) We were just laughing about this very subject last week. BF and I have been enjoying pancakes the past few weeks... kinda on a kick plus it's been hot here so they're easy to fix. I think it looks good.I do weird combo's sometimes too trying to clean out the fridge so things do not go bad.Can not think of one right now.Maybe I am just hungry since it is morning and it is looking good?lol.I do like salsa on omlettes but I do't think that is strange. I really like white rice with chocolate syrup on it! I learned this from my Grandpa; he grew up eating this as a sweet treat when he was a child. My kids frequently look at me like, "What are you doing?" I think it looks very good. I would put peanut butter on just about anything....pancakes,waffles,toast, apples, bananas. I have to be careful not to gross out my husband, he doesn't like peanut butter:) Peanutbutter on pancakes and waffles Ketchup mixed into mashed potatoes with peas or corn in it. Ketchup on brussel sprouts. Peanutbutter and bacon sandwiches First of all I have to say that I absolutely love your blog. I have found so many wonderful recipes to add to my once boring recipe book, but not anymore thanks to you! Ooooh, I just remembered another one from childhood -- saltine crackers crumbled up and stirred into applesauce. I ate that all the time! My younger sister Bonnie likes shredded cheddar cheese in her applesauce... I love pancakes with hot fudge. Ummm... I grew up eating cottage cheese drizzled with (or drenched in, depending on who did the pouring) syrup. Loved it then, can't even fathom it now! One of my favorite quick stove top dishes is fried potatoes and chopped hot dogs with onions, all stir fried together. With ketchup! Yum! Amy Jelly and cottage cheese Hot peppers on fried eggs My kids like to mix ketchup and ranch dressing for dipping anything. Grilled Cheese - with a slice of fresh tomato and tuna inside. Mmmmm! I also LOVE peanut butter and banana sandwiches, which I never thought was strange until I starting meeting lots of people who've never heard of such a thing. Everyone in my family eats them! My sister is the one with the "strange" taste buds at our house; ~ketchup on eggs Out of all the other comments on here so far, "bacon and peanut butter sandwich" caught my attention the most. I can't IMAGINE that one! But taste buds are rather fun to compare. :) Maybe I'll have to try some of these combos. :) Tammy, I think your meal looks great. We love fried cabbage too and your omlette looks yummy. Can't wait to see what's in that soup though! Some of my crazy combos: I always pour syrup on breakfast sausage. :) And when I was a kid we liked Wendy's French fries dipped in a Wendy's frosty. My sister-in-law mixes mayo into her plate of spaghetti. I have tried it. It is quite good, but odd. My husband and children like it also. I like to melt a hershey bar, and dip plain ruffled potato chips into it for a sweet and salty treat. My father eats mayo and banana sandwiches. I have never tried this. It just does not appeal to me. When I was younger, I used to mix yellow mustard into my mashed potatoes, and dip my fries in it. I have not done that in years. Maybe I will try it again soon. This post prompted that memory. What a fun post. As always, I enjoy reading your blog Tammy! My favorite sandwich is peanut butter and bananas! I really like the fried mush recipe in Nourishing Traditions. It is leftover porridge or oatmeal mixed with an egg. Lightly cook it in a buttered skillet and top with honey! It is so good! I never thought that I would like it but it tastes so good!! I love syrup on my scrambled eggs, and thousand island dressing on my tacos. My mom has always eaten ketchup on her enchiladas. I thought it was disgusting until a couple of years ago, until I had the strangest craving for a bowl of chili with ketchup on top. Now, I can't eat a bowl of chili or chili and rice without ketchup! Crazy, I know. No telling what I'm going to crave when I do get pregnant:) Watch out world! My son asked to have lettuce, ketchup and mustard between 2 slices of bread for dinner the other day. My stomach couldn't handle the idea. My husband tells me I'm strange for putting ketchup on scrambled eggs. We like... Apple jelly on cheese omlettes These are rare treats these days of calorie watching and carb counting. Thanks for the memories!! Mary in TN Some already mentioned, ketchup on eggs, and when I was little syrup on cottage cheese (can't stand the stuff now), but also a couple of days ago I tried this recipe (http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/000942cheese_tacos.php) of putting apple slices in cheese tacos and it was actually very good! So good, in fact, that I'm doing it again tonight! sandwich with bacon and I think it sounds great and forgot about it.I want to try it! Hi Tammy, Love your blog, though this is my first time commenting on here! I have a couple of things I like to eat that anyone I tell about seems to think is REALLY strange. Both are things that I grew up eating...my Nana introduced me to them. 1. Toast with peanut butter and applesauce. 2. Milk and arrowroot cookies...put some milk in a bowl and heat in the microwave for a minute. Then put as many arrowroot cookies as you want in the bowl and break them up with a spoon. I consider it to be a hot cereal. I love both of these, though my husband looks grossed out when I make them! I grew up with a very strange step-brother...I think he mostly liked to gross us out. He would drink grape kool-aid and pickle juice. For lunch he would make a peanut butter, jelly, mayo, mustard, bologna and cheese sandwich. I was never brave enough to try those combos but I did try and like a fried egg, butter, peanut butter sandwich. Also my FIL made a breakfast sandwich for me and my daughter that we now love. Toasted bread, scrambled eggs, bacon and jelly ....yum! I love peanut butter too. PB and corn dogs...yum Also grew up eating PB, balogna, mayo sandwiches. Of course the pb had to be on the opposite side as the mayo. Otherwise, it would be gross. ;) My Uncle likes his hot dogs served with mustard and strawberry jam. I can't eat strawberries, so I have no idea if this strange concoction is actually good. I grew up eating soup beans (cooked navy beans) which we ate over boiled potatoes and then topped with chopped raw onions and sweet pickle relish. These are best served with a side of cornbread. My Dad's favorite sandwich is peanut butter and mustard. My Mom eats peanut butter, iceberg lettuce and potato chip sandwiches (actually pretty good). I came up with this when I was little and I still sometimes get a craving for saltines with a slice of cheese and topped with either dill pickles or green olives. :) When I worked in a childcare center in college, one of the snacks we served was American cheese on saltines. It was really good. :) I thought I had nothing unique to add to this until I saw tammy mention saltines. I like crumbled crackers with diced tomato mixed in and mayo mixed in the whole thing. Its good!! I grew up eating peanut butter and tomato sandwiches. They are so good but best when the tomatoes are peeled and straight from the garden. We also always eat peanut butter on our pancakes. We even ask for peanut butter at restaurants if we happen to be eating pancakes. The waitresses tell us that we are not alone. :) My husband got me started on chocolate ice cream with barbque corn chips. Its very good. When I was younger my mom and I used to eat fried potato sandwiches on white bread with mayo or ketchup. Yummy. Are any of these strange? ~ Ketchup and mayo on rice You know, I'm never sure whether some things I like are "weird" or not, since I never think to ask other folks what combinations they eat. Oh yes - and once my siblings and I put every sandwich condiment we could think of on the table, and took turns daring one another to try everything together. I ate a peanut butter, ketchup, pickle, mayo, and tuna (and I think cheese) sandwich. I got it down, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone. :) When I was little my dad would make us peanut butter and balogna sandwiches, but somebody else posted that, (kind of) too. From reading these comments apparently peanut butter and anything can make a sandwich! My kids LOVE peanut butter and balogna. I also like ketchup on my french toast. Actually I have to have one with syrup first, then one with ketchup dipped in the leftover syrup! Last night we had falafels for dinner. The day didn't go as planned though and I didn't make pitas to put them in, so we had them with fettuccine and a tomato salad. We've been experimenting with beans and that's been fun - and the falafels were delicious and got rave reviews. Of course, they were fried in oil...that'll help anything taste great. Wow, maybe I'm odd but very few of these things seem odd except maybe the peanut butter and everything sandwich.... Our eldest loves mustard on his pizza, ketchup on chicken/grits/eggs/most veggies, cream style corn straight out of the can, cottage cheese w/ ketchup. I love real maple syrup on almost all bread/grain products. We reheat leftover rice with raisins, cinnamon, and milk to eat for breakfast or comfort food. My all time favorite is a dish called Bagne Caulda. It is sardines, anchovies, garlic, olive oil, and butter all sauteed together. Once cooked you dip veggies/cheese/hard italian sausage/italian bread into it. It is truly divine!!! I also love to dip Ruffles potato chips into vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate syrup or maple syrup or Nestle Quik. It is a very rare treat... Oh, all our our children love potato chips in their sandwiches but that is only when dad is not around. Oh what about fried bologna sandwiches or peanut butter, marshmallow creme and banana sandwiches or you can substitute chocolate for the banana. Not to be confused these are all made on whole wheat bread. Yah, I know it is kinda odd... :-) I like cooking leftover rice with milk, raisins, and cinnamon for breakfast, too. And I like peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwiches on whole wheat bread. Bagna cauda sounds awesome--I love salty food. When my brother was little he ate mayonnaise sandwiches. My sister liked to butter Ritz crackers. Those never appealed to me. But I did eat macaroni and cheese (from a box) mixed with Cocoa Puffs (yeah, this was when Mom had gone back to work and I was fixing my own after-school snacks...). Now I like grilled cheese-and-pickle sandwiches. Hubby dips pizza in ranch dressing, but that doesn't appeal to me. Oh, he also spreads jam on a biscuit, then uses the biscuit to mop up the yolk from fried eggs. His dad does that, too. I enjoyed reading everyone's favorite unusual combination! It brought back a lot of memories of stuff I used to enjoy as a child! I'd never thought of the food I ate as "unusual", until I married a traditional man who's idea was, "If it's not a recipe in a cookbook, it's not a real dish!" :-) Here are some things that I grew up on... My dad always ate sliced tomatoes with sugar sprinkled heavily on them. I never aquired a taste for that one, though! And my mom loved sliced bread topped with meat gravy. Post new comment |

I love rye bread with a thick spread of mustard and sliced pickles.
Thats it. No slami, turkey - nothing.
This is the best lunch in the world for me.
