Kitchen Tip Tuesdays: Homemade syrup for waffles or pancakes

Growing up, my mom always served this brown sugar syrup for our pancakes and waffles. It's easy to make, stores well in the fridge, and is healthier than store-bought pancake syrup (though of course it's still all sugar!!).

Brown sugar syrup

We usually serve fruit with our pancakes or waffles (like our strawberry sauce), but when we're out of fruit, we make this brown sugar syrup. It's soooo yummy!! It does make waffles into more of a dessert than a breakfast food, so we try to remedy the menu plan by also serving scrambled eggs and vegetables. :)

We made this too!

My mom used to make this all of the time when we ran out of syrup! Loaded with sugar, but it is good!

Thank you!!

kitchen tip tuesday

Tammy,
I enjoy reading your blog. I have started my own blog so I can write down recipes as I think of them, so one day my daughters can use it as reference when they want to make something like mom does. I imagine your blog will be the same way.

My grandmother used to make

My grandmother used to make this syrup. She would make waffles in her cast iron waffle iron and serve with hot, sticky, brown sugar syrup. I have never been able to replicate the exact crispiness and taste of her waffles, but I have come close.

I remember this

My mom used to make this as well when we ran out of syrup. Yummy!

Also, I linked to my Tuesday Tip.

I seem to be having trouble

I seem to be having trouble linking properly to my blog this time. Sorry! But if you click on the link it will take you to an error page with a link to my blog. So if you follow that you will end up at the right place. I hate when that happens!

Rachel (Beans in the Crockpot)

its good

I've made one similar when out of syrup and it is yummy!

I haven't tried it with butter and cornsyrup in there...hmmm. Bet that taste even better!

Thanks!

Thanks for the syrup recipe! I've been looking for a sweet alternative to the store bought syrups. I'm not much on maple syrup and DH doesn't care for the HFCS in store bought syrups. So this will be a happy medium LOL!

Mmmm

Why oh why can't brown sugar be a health food? I love that stuff, and in syrup like Mom used to make...oh my!

Looks good

That looks good. ...But I'm afraid I'm stuck on my favorite syrup substitute recipe. :) Of course, I only use it when we don't have 100% pure NY maple syrup from my grandparents...YUM!

But when we don't have that, I mix equal parts of honey and molasses together, then add enough water to make it a syrup consistency. If I take the time to melt butter and use that instead of water, it's even better.

No sugar, and it's so yummy!

But thanks for sharing this recipe, too. Maybe I'll try it sometime.

Apple Cinnamon Syrup

I make a yummy apple cinnamon syrup.

Just put 1/2 cup each apple juice concentrate and water, with 1 tbsp. cornstarch and a sprinkling of cinnamon, in a saucepan-heat & stir till thickened.

Yummy and sweet without added sugars!

Pancakes in Snow

Sometimes, instead of syrup, we sift a bit of powdered sugar over our pancakes or waffles. The kids call it snow. We don't use much, and they like the change of pace.
