Our lawn mower is finally about done for. We were given a small push mower when we moved here 4 years ago, and one of my brothers fixed the problem it had. A couple years ago, the handle broke off of the deck and my dad was able to weld it back on, and he said the deck was so thin it wouldn't take any more welding in the future. Now, one of the back wheels plus part of the deck has broken off. I finished mowing backwards last week. ;)
For a replacement, we're thinking about a manual reel lawn mower. The kind that don't take gasoline. The kind that are quiet enough and safe enough to use with children playing outside in the yard. ;) The kind that, when you use them, they count as exercise. ;)
Have any of you had any experience with a reel lawn mower? What brand/kind is best? And is it really practical for me to plan on mowing our lawn with one?
Currently it takes me about 45-60 minutes to mow our lawn with the small push mower. If I really hurry and the grass isn't too long, I might be able to do it in 35 minutes. The lawn is pretty flat, but does have weeds in with the grass.
I do enjoy mowing the lawn. I've always thought it was fun! And I love the combination of endorphins from exercise along with a beautiful green lawn.

That is what my husband uses
We picked one up at a yard sale last summer for I think $20.00.It cuts the grass so much nicer and the kids can do it too and I do not have to worry about them.Dh has to oil it once in awhile and it is fine.I do not know what kind it is but I will ask tonight. We do have a gas push mower but it hasn't been used since we bought this one.Dh loves it and would never go to the gas mower again and he tells everyone all about it :)
I will ask more questions tonight and get back to you on it.
Mower
Hi Tammy,
I used one of these as a kid.I love the reel mowers chiefly because of the nostalgia factor. However, they are a lot of work; cutting the grass takes much longer than with a power mower because the cutting width is much narrower.
One thing that's important to remember is the reels or blades need to be sharpened several times throughout the season so they cut well. It is murder to try and use a dull reel mower, plus it is really hard on the grass.
Take Care,
Trixie
My experience with reel mowers
We had a small yard with our first house and a smaller budget when it came to purchasing our first mower. They are very economical especially when you consider gas prices. I had a 1-2 year old at the time and liked that I could mow/exercise for my busy husband and still watch the baby. It also makes for a nicer lawn because it cuts the tops evenly instead of shredding them. We purchased ours at Sears.
Some cons: I found that I would often have to go over some areas twice in order to get it all even. Weeds can be irritating esp. dandelions as they would just bend over under the mower and pop up after I passed. Be sure that all of your sticks or anything else is picked up in your yard that could jamb the rotation of the blades. When you're walking along and something gets stuck in there while your not paying attention, the rotation stops while you keep going and the bar will slam into your stomach.
Overall, I would probably still use it if we had a smaller yard (we now have 2.5ac).
See if you can borow one first
We have both sorts of mowers--gas fueled and human fueled:) We both like the way the manual mower cuts the grass--it actually cuts the grass instead of ripping it like a gas powered one does. And, it is safer to use around children. You would want to invest in a sharpening kit as well, as the blades tend to dull with use. I think DH sharpens ours before the first use each Spring and maybe once again towards the end of summer if we've had a rainy year and lots of grass cutting.
While we like our manual mower, it does take quite a bit more effort and some extra time. We also still have to use a weed eater to trim out all the edges and shrubs etc. to make the lawn look neat and clean. Maybe see if you could borrow one from someone and give it a test drive on your lawn. You'll probably know pretty quickly whether or not you like the activity...if you like lawm mowing in general, you might really love a manual. If it's a hot, sweaty chore, though, you might not like the extra work and effort involved. Just some thoughts...
Oh, and the reason we still have a gas powered mower is for the weeks when we have let the grass get too long or we are in a big hurry and need to get the job done ASAP.
Reel mower vs. real mower
Both my husband and I had used gas-powered mowers while we were growing up. When we got a house of our own with a smaller yard, we thought that we would give a reel mower a try, for many of the reasons you listed...no gas, cheaper upfront purchase price, opportunity for exercise, quiet, and safe.. After about 2-1/2 years though, we switched back to a gas-powered lawn mower.
A few things to keep in mind when using a reel mower...it is going to take you longer. How much longer depends upon your strength and stamina. It also depends upon how long your grass is. While you might be able to get away with only mowing once per week with a gas mower, you will find that your grass will be easier to mow if you do it at least two times a week with a reel mower. Our neighbor, who also used a reel mower, cut his grass every other day. If your grass gets long enough that it begins to fall over, you may find it very difficult to cut effectively.
A gas-powered mower can often mulch or collect clippings in a bag. You can get a tray sort of contraption that kind of drags behind a reel lawn mower (which I would recommend if you get one, unless you like raking up all of that dead dried grass that is going to collect along the top of your lawn), but you will likely have to carry it and empty it more often than you would a larger-sized bag.
With a reel mower, you definitely need to keep the blades sharp to be effective at all. Consider the cost of taking the blade to be sharpened when working out costs. It has been awhile now, but depending on how much grass you cut, the toughness, etc. you may need to do this a couple of times each year at the minimum.
Not that a gas-powered mower is any ace at getting close to edges, tight corners, etc., but a reel mower is even worse because it only cuts going in a straight forward direction. Expect to spend time trimming with some other type of gadget...likely noisy, gas or electric-powered, and requiring safety, unless of course, you decide to use scissors.
Hope this helps with your decision. I'm not saying that reel mowers are bad, but they aren't as simple as they appear to be either...not that a little elbow grease ever hurt any of us! (grin!) I look forward to hearing what model you decide to go with.
Me too!
I've always wanted to try that kind of lawn mower, so I'm looking forward to reading the comments on this post!
We recently had to purchase
We recently had to purchase a new mower and dh chose a gas powered one for us (we mow a 1/4 acre though) he thought the reel mower would just be too much for me to mow that much grass. I think now that he was right esp since we have had lots of rain which means lot of growth for the grass(and the gardens) it takes me about 2 hours to mow with the gas powered mower I can just imagine how long it would take me to mow with a reel mower!
I used to mow my Great Grandmother's lawn with one back in the late 70's and 80's I loved that thing as long as the blades were kept VERY sharp if not it was a pain! She had a very tiny yard though.
I think it's a great way to
I think it's a great way to save fuel costs, but as someone else mentioned, the blades dull quickly. So I'd invest in a quality reel mower before just going "cheap". Check with the Lehman's website (www.lehmans.com). They even have some tips and info about using reel mowers at their site. (That's a cool store anyways if you just go to browse!)
We don't use one as our lot isn't suited to one, but my bro-in-law uses one. I grew up mowing the lawn and loved it too.
Emily
We use one
We like it, but I wouldn't sugest it for a larger lawn. The area of grass we have to cut is 16x21 ft it takes about 15 min to do and we have to go over a couple of times sometimes to get a good cut. It works for us because our lawn is so small.
A reel mower fan
I don't know the brand of our reel lawnmower since it was given to us for free, but we've had good experiences with it. I've never mowed our lawn with anything but the reel mower, but it's a reasonably small city lot and it takes maybe an hour. Generally I go over spots twice, once in each direction. I find I need to be really careful not to let the grass get too long or the reel mower pushes the blades over without cutting them.
I agree with others who've recommended borrowing one to try before you make the investment -- I know a lot of people who have reel mowers languishing in their garages because they were not for them.
Our Story
My grandad used a manual mower for 70+ years until he sold his house. We inherited both of his mowers and used them for a little bit until someone gave us a gas one. If I weren't pregnant and it wasn't 90 out, I'd be using it. ;-)
Keep the blades sharp, the parts well-oiled and the grass short. We found it was harder to mow longer grass. The newer models are a lot better than the old (we have one of each). It took Mike about four hours to mow half an acre, but that was during the spring rains when things were growing like crazy.
I've used grass shears to trim around flower beds to eliminate the need for a weed eater--just depends on how much landscaping you have. We're trying an electric weed eater for now.
Good luck! I'm cheering you on! :-D
Reel Mower
My husband had a reel mower for a good chunk of years.
The only drawbacks to them that we could come up with were: having to mow bi-weekly since it only takes about an inch off at a time, not mulching so you may have to rake.
He never had to sharpen the blades in all the years and it really didn't take longer than our gas mower to mow if he did it often enough.
Good luck on your decision!
I love mine!
We love ours! I wrote about it here:
http://be-it-ever-so-humble.blogspot.com/2008/05/old-fashioned-lawnmower.html
You can get a wide one with two sets of wheels, which is what we have. It doesn't do well with weeds or crabgrass, which we have in the backyard, so we keep a yard sale gas mower for the back. If your lawn is weed-free and nice, you'll love it! If it has a bit more character, you might want to consider a normal mower.
I just bought one 2 months ago and love it!
Tammy,
This is a timely question for me. I just bought a Scott's 20-inch reel mower and LOVE it! These mowers today are different than the ones from the 50's. They are so much improved! You shouldn't need to sharpen them more than once a season. Some say every few years. It used to take about 30 minutes to mow the front lawn and 45 to mow the back with our gas mower. Now it takes about 40 minutes for the front and 1 hour for the back so not too much more. We have 1/3 of an acre. I bought it to help my husband and only planned on mowing our smaller front lawn but I LOVE using it so much that I do the back, too. It is a little bit more work but not nearly as heavy and safe and quiet and good exercise and good for the environment and can be done early in the morning when it's still cool. I can go on and on. I just love it.
I picked the Scott's 20 inch because it had the widest blade and it got good reviews. I ended up finding one on Craigslist for $40 - well below what they're asking on Amazon. The only cons are that it won't cut certain types of grass (very thin grass - don't know what it's called and some taller weeds). It cuts our regular grass and clovers and Virginia creeper weeds very well. Also, if you have a lot of sticks on your lawn then the sticks get caught in the blade and you have to keep pulling them out. Overall, I'm in love with this thing and when I'm done my yard I feel like mowing my neighbor's yard with it. It's really fun!
WE have a reel lawnmower and
WE have a reel lawnmower and love it. I think it is a "Scott's" brand. We paid over $100 for it and the grass catcher...which we only used a few times. We have a double lot in town. It may take you longer to mow...it may not. Just remember if you let the grass get to high...it has a hard time cutting it...or it won't cut at all.
Reel lawnmower
I remember mowing my aunt and uncle's yard with a reel mower when I was a girl - they had a postage stamp yard, so it was okay and it was a novelty for me so I didn't mind that it took forever.
Our neighbor's mower was giving him fits so he borrowed a reel mower from a friend to give it a try-he took his gas mower to the shop to have it fixed the very next day. His yard is fairly small too.
If it's already taking you 45-60 minutes with a gas mower, you could be looking at 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours with a reel mower.
We haven't ever used one on our yard and haven't owned one personally, so I can't speak from personal experience (other than the times as girl using my uncle's) however, I think that even with gas prices being what they are, you might be better off buying a better quality gas mower that might cut the time you spend mowing the yard instead of increasing the time by purchasing a reel mower. Besides, if you're needing to have the blades sharpened frequently, are you really saving anything?
Just my two cents,
Michelle
Mower
We love our push mower! We don't even have a lawn anymore, but we loved it so much, we're keeping it in storage at our apartment for now. It's a Great States "inexpensive" model that we got at Home Depot years ago for around $50. I don't think they carry that model anymore, though. I checked online, and they seem to have something different now.

reel or REAL
You will laugh at this.. I was asking my husband how we are gonna keep the biggest roughest section of our lawn mowed down this year as of right now we are doing it with a weedwacker.. His response was ....
We're buying a GOAT .. talk about a REAL MOWER plus fertilizer.
Cryssie
Goats or Sheep for grass...
Hello Cryssie,
My parents had looked into goats for their grassy fields and I had related to them what farmers told me: goats tend toward shrubs, small trees, plants like blackberry bushes, and so forth. Sheep tend toward grass (think small cows). My parents got the goats... and they DID remove all their extra blackberry bushes and overgrowth but they don't really touch the grass much at all.
For a decent enough sized yard-pasture, a lamb may not be a bad idea if logistics (like use of the field) work out.
I've had goats. They are
I've had goats. They are like deer. They are browsers. They will eat everything BUT the grass. Get sheep. They will keep your grass cut since they are grazers. But, just make sure your fence is very high. Sheep LOVE to jump fences.

You also need to get more
You also need to get more than one goat or sheep. They move in herds and will yell all day and night if they are by themselves. Do a ton of research before buying any kind of farm animal.
Our goats destroyed our rose bushes and tried very hard to destroy our apple trees. We kept them behind a heavy duty electric fence, but the few time we left the gate open...straight for the garden they went!

mowers
My dearest husband just bought us a new riding lawn mower this weekend. I would love to use a reel mower, but it takes me 2 hours to cut our lawn on a riding mower...I can't imagine how long it would take with a reel mower. If gas keeps going up, we might have to consider the goat angle mentioned by Cryssie ;-) LOL!
We just bought one...
and we love it! It doesn't take any more effort than a gas powered one. But I would make sure it has a bag to collect all those clippings for your compost bin!
Mower
Before I got married, I had a small yard and did not want the maintenance worries with a gas powered mower so I purchased a Smith & Hawkin reel mower. I loved using it, but of course, I had a very small front lawn. It worked wonderfully as long as I did not let the grass get too long. I loved how quite it was! I can't tell you how many people stopped to talk to me about my mower! It really brought back memories for so many people. If we had a small yard now, I would still use a reel mower, but we now have a few acres.
Thank you all for the great
Thank you all for the great input about mowers!! :)
Part of my thinking for the reel mower is that I could mow part of the lawn each day for my exercise. I'm currently mowing the lawn about once a week, and exercising indoors on the other days. I figured I could do most of my exercising outside (mowing) by splitting up the work.
Our push mower is fairly small and I get a GOOD workout mowing the whole lawn... I imagine the speed and time is somewhat dependent on the strength of the person mowing... so maybe I could work up to being faster? :)
I guess I'm thinking current lawn time + daily exercise time = reel mower time. :)
We do get a lot of little sticks on our lawn though...
We use a Scott's reel mower
We use a Scott's reel mower that we purchased at Home Depot, but Amazon has it with free shipping for less. It works well as long as you get the larger sized one. The larger, the more maneuverable, and they get stuck less also. Ours gets stuck on the higher grass, and I have to stop to roll the drum back a little with my foot. A bit of a nuisance, but it cuts well.
I love it!
We found an OLD one in my wifes aunts basement, and the wife wanted it, so we took it home.
Its OLD, made by Clemson, model E17.
I adjusted it and tried it out.
We have 175 feet by 175 feet, but lots of gardens, it was 98F and very humid, the lawn is kind of stressed out and not real thick, but we also have some thick zoisia spots, and I found it easier to mow with the clemson, it took a bit longer, maybe 1/2 hour, but I was fooling with the adjustments and height.
I never had such fun mowing, the mower went through thick spots easy, seemed to do a good job overall, but the lack of noise, dust, and fumes was fantastic!
Its also lighter then even the homelight mulching mower and easy on the back. I plan on using it except when the grass is way to long.
Its worth it in the lack of noise and dust, you can mow at 9am without disturbing people.

Clemson model E17
Brett,
I have a Clemson E17 with a slightly bent frame. I am going to post it on ebay, but wondered if you are interested in it for parts.

Push Reel Mower
I have a Sunlawn push reel mower and I love it! I love getting out during the summer mornings and mowing my lawn without waking up my neighbors!
It is an excellent way to get exercise and honestly I find it rather relaxing. Sunlawn is a quality choice because the blades do not need to be sharpened for 10 years! (as opposed to some of the cheaper models)
The best part about having a push reel mower though is that it is an eco-friendly choice! When I finish mowing, I put all of my clippings in a composter! (Which is another great product by the way) I found this Tumbleweed Composter on CleanAirGardening.com and it composts easily with no bad compost smell!
All in all, I would highly recommend purchasing a push reel mower!...I think you'll be happy with your choice!
Push Reel mower and doggie doo
If you use one, make sure there is no doggie doo in your yard! I was using a reel mower until I accidentally hit a pile left from my pup and covered myself with the nasty stuff. The mower went to the next yard sale after that!
I really like using the push
I really like using the push reel mowers because they are so quiet! I don't have to worry about waking up my neighbors if I want to mow in the morning.
