I'm glad that I am in the majority of those that have posted so far. Actually, my wonderful husband has cleaned mine occaisionally.

God bless the inventor of the self-cleaning oven and the husband who insisted that we get one with that feature!

Depends on what you mean by "cleaning"! :-D I make it easy by lining the bottom with aluminum foil, so "cleaning" to me is just pulling out the dirty foil and sliding some fresh foil under the coil. It's a breeze!

I have cleaned too many burned on spills in too many ovens. I have learned to place a sheet of foil on the bottom of the oven to catch any spills. They have the inexpensive foil oven liners but a piece of foil works just as well. If I had to clean the oven everytime there was a spill I would have to give up using the oven :)

on how much messy, running over the edge of the pan type things I've been baking. Sometimes I clean my oven every couple of months, sometimes once or twice a year. Basically, whenever it looks like it needs to be cleaned.

My oven is self-cleaning so it's not a difficult job, it just means that my oven is tied up for 4 or 5 hours and that can be a problem.

I purchased an oven liner from one of those specialty shops that sell those nifty kitchen gadgets. It costed $20.00 but I think it was worth the investment. I just pull it out and rinse it off. It works for both electric and gas ovens. Also, I clean any additional stains with a mixture of baking soda and water. I just spray it in the oven and turn it the oven on at a moderate heat for a few minutes and then wipe off when cool. It works great on black baked on stains and most of all, the homemade cleaner is nontoxic.

I use foil on the bottom of my stove, and wipe down the inside door every once in a while. We have a self cleaning oven, so every year, I run that feature. That self cleaning cycle is also good for making your stonewear new again. It takes off all the seasoning and burnt on stuff. My pizza stone needed it after a few years, and I've done it to other stonewear that I sold on ebay(years ago).

To then eat stuff that was then baked in the stoneware?

I think the old food would burn off the stoneware, not bake into it? Just like the cleaning cycle burns the old food off the oven, and then the ashes can be swept out?
