How often do you go to the grocery store? Submitted by Tammy on Tue, 2008-07-01 23:25.
I try to keep it to once a week, unless I find I really need something or there is a deal that is too good to pass up. However, if I'm making a second trip, I try to combine it with another errand so I don't feel the trip was "wasted". :) It's hard to shop with a little one, so I don't want to do it multiple times! :) I really do my MAIN shopping 1x a month-- But then there are the "extra" milk runs and when I find a neat recipe to use all the berries I have found that calls for cream cheese-- have to have it-- luckily dh picks it up on his way home-- so I don't make a 2nd trip. Love your blog-- I link to it frequently on mine-- hope you don't mind.... homeschoolblogger.com/mominpa Hi Tammy, Hi Tammy, I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I'm at the grocery store nearly every day. :-( I used to go every week, but it became so exhausting with the kids. Now I go once every 2 weeks. I am trying to get my act together and get organized enough to only go once a month. : ) Baby steps... Actually, we go to the grocery store atleast once a day and often times twice! Isn't that terrible? I don't drive yet(only sixteen), but my mom isn't exactly very organized when it comes to planning the day and shopping. I hope to be a once a weeker some day. ~Ali With busy-ness of everyday life which includes fixing three meals a day, grocery shopping is done in one big trip and with a few other little trips the rest of the month for milk, fresh produce and sales. Susan Although I hate to do it. I try to keep it to once a week on either Friday or Saturday. We live about 10 miles from town and it wastes SO much gas to go back and forth all the time. I try to do with what I have or think of something else to cook instead of going to the store. I always forget things, even if they are right under my nose on my list. I try really hard to arrange the list the way the store is laid out, but if I ever skip an item on my list, thinking I'll get back to it, I virtually always forget it. This happens even when I cross things off as I go. I must be stupid or something. Some weeks (bad ones) I go every other day. Other times I keep it to once or twice a week. I have never been able to go less than once a week. There is no way. We drink far too much milk for that, and I have trouble fitting more than three gallons at a time into my refrigerator. We live very close (about a mile) to three stores (Sam's, Aldi's and Wegman's). I try to make a weekly menu and do "big" shopping once a week and then just pick up the things I forgot when we need more milk (shifting the menu plan if necessary to accomodate). Sometimes this works pretty well, sometimes not so well. Tammy, Since we get paid only once a month, I try to do my bulk shopping once a month. Then, if I find a very good deal or run out of something, which happens about once a week, I go again. Darcy i am a bit embarressed to say that .......... we do grocery shopping every single night !!! :O ........ but it is a little different for us, i myself actually do not go to the store very often at all ........ "Daddy" works at a small Bank branch which is actually located right in one of our local grocerie stores, so he essentially works "in the grocery store" so it makes it easy .......... he just picks up things on his way home ......... we are "shop as we go" people ......... but in our case i've actually found that it saves us money as we arnt buying lots of perishables days or weeks in advance ......... being a small one child family sometimes its hard to through food before it goes bad !! ........ i dont really plan meals on a weekly basis, i just keep a running list of all the things i know we eat, including Milk, fruit, Ceareal, chicken, cheese, butter, eggs, pasta, rice, chicken broth, vegetables ......... we tend to use a lot of the same ingredients for different dinners and meals so it works out ......... i keep a variety of vegetables on hand, things to eat fresh and always onions and peppers for cooking and sometimes garlic .......... i try to atleast plan the "big meal" (dinner) by thinking about it throughout the day so i can make sure he picks up whatever we need for it ........... sometimes on pay day he does a big shopping, sometimes it's just one or 2 things ... every once in awhile we're like "Wow ...... we dont need Anything !!" :O hehe .......... which is kind of a good day ;) ......... the only time i really have to plan in advance is if we want to do something like a Roast or a pieace of meat which has to cook all day .......... this system is working for us so far ......... i dont kow what we're going to do when he doesnt work at grocery store anymore !!! hehe ......... as for me, i actually anjoy our rare "family" shopping trips now ........... it's like a fun little outing, and i use the opportunity to scope out new products our grocery might be caring, get ideas and inspirations for new things :) :) ........... also i get the chance to educate "my man" about different kinds of produce etc :p so he knows how to pick it out ......... i dont really feel bad about shopping like this, it makes it easier for us, and we feel more flexible ....... We live out rural, so a trip to the grocery store is a weekly thing for us. We combine it with our other errands. I try to have our weekly menu made the day before with my shopping list for each store. Then on errand morning, we make pb & j sandwiches, put a gallon of ice in the ice chest for our cold items we buy and head off on our day. We are always gone the whole day. It is a l-o-n-g day, but not having to drive back into town is so worth it. I would love to go every other week! But piano lessons and library videos just wont wait that long. I go grocery shopping once a month. We live an hour away from any store that has decent prices...so we stock up for the month and then keep a list for when we go out again. I will stop at our local walmart a few more times than that when I am going to the bank, but it is a regular walmart, not a superwalmart, so no groceries there...any more often is way too much gas! We tend to head to the grocery store (Super Wal-Mart) whenever we need something or when there are good deals and my husband stops (Meijer) on his way home from work (around 4am usually). We don't really plan trips or make lists. I can never stick to a list because we go up and down ever aisle to look for deals. That's probably why we spend so much on groceries! ...once every couple of weeks to coincide with the paycheck but there's inevitably something that comes up. It saves a decent amount of time and money when we can manage it though. ;) ...which is too often for me. I don't enjoy grocery shopping. Luckily my husband does enjoy it, so he frequently will go shopping for me if I make out a list for him. I love when he does that! We shop a lot at Aldi's and also Kroger and Meijer when they have good sales and loss leaders in their ads. We do our shopping once a week on Wenesday when the sale ads change. I will on ocassion have to do mor eon anaother day, but usually I do it all on one day. I plan out the meals for the week, checking plans for picnics, potlucks etc so I have the food in the house and it works well for us and it saves on gas. We like to bulk up on many sale items..and we have 2 deep freezers to fill. We butcher in the fall and that keeps us in meat for a while. The major purchase is milk which is mega money lately.. I do buy bread in bulk and freeze the rest. The garden is just about ready..so that will be my next purchase..(canning jars/ freezer bags) Hubby and I go once a week. He won't go without me, and he can't remember what he needs (we eat breakfast and lunch separately) unless he's looking at it! :) I'm good at planning meals and sticking to a list, and I've even taught hubby to check unit prices. :) Usually I need to pick up produce and shop loss leaders with coupons at least once a week. I go on Tuesdays, even though I work during the school year. The sales here end on Tuesday, and I want to use the full week to collect any coupons that I don't have. My menu is always made out ahead of time, so I am always ready to cook with the meats, etc. that I have stocked up on ahead of time, and I am not running to the store for something I've run out of. Stocking up and having a detailed menu make my job easy and allow me to save tons! Leslie aka Menu Maker Mom About twice a week. We shop two stores for groceries: Food Lion and Save-a-Lot. Sometimes we can't get to two stores in one day. We seem to go through a lot of milk, eggs and fruit...sometimes we can't last a week without getting more. The two year old eats bananas like there is no tomorrow. ;) Post new comment |

When we lived in Michigan, I didn't shop that often. But here on Long Island, I must shop the 6 main grocery stores for their loss leaders in order to be able to afford groceries! So I run into different stores as I'm near them just to pick up the specials. Crazy!! But it must be done.
