Innovation of a determined four-year-old

Yehoshua's nutcracker

When I was outside hanging laundry this morning, Yehoshua found an old pecan in the dirt. I have no idea where it came from, but he set right to work on cracking it open. He used a toy hammer on the porch's cement floor, and had the nut open in no time! I told him not to eat the nut, because I didn't know how old it was. He put it on the sidewalk for some ants to eat.

I then told him I would get him a fresh pecan to eat. I got out a pecan (in the shell) and told him he could crack it and eat it. He tried and tried to crack that new pecan, but apparently it wasn't so old and brittle like the last one was. ;)

Yehoshua begged me to open it for him, but I told him he needed to find a way to do it himself. About 15 minutes later, I walked into the living room and he said "I'm cracking it!" as I heard a crunching noise.

Using some supplies from this tool set (which was a surprise gift to the boys from Joshua's parents earlier this year!), Yehoshua had made the above contraption and was using a screw driver to tighten the screw and crack the pecan! :)

We've had so much lovely weather these days. The boys love playing outside, and I love doing laundry when it isn't rainy! I even let it hang out all night sometimes, when there's no rain predicted... is that bad?? :)

My sister Bonnie came over today and helped me with some Spring cleaning. I had been feeling a little overwhelmed because even though the daily stuff gets done pretty well, I just hadn't been able to make enough time for anything extra -- like vacuuming out the car, rescuing toys from the floor vents, or cleaning fingerprints off windows. With two of us working hard, we were able to get quite a bit done in one day! :)

What a clever little boy you have!

My son got the same tool set for his 3rd birthday last January and it's one of his favorite things. He loves to build the bird house. But he has not used it any way out of the ordinary like that! LOL!

Wow Tammy this is really impressive - Yehoshua has a talent - what a logical brain he has.

Engineer to the core! I think it is just as cool that he didn't give up and persevered as it is that he built the " nut cracker."

I bet he will be a Lego lover!

What a smarth thing to make! Just goes to show you that kids can do things on there own, if we just give them the time.

I don't think it is bad to let your clothes hang out all night. Sometimes when I need to wash a load of clothes and I don't want to get behind, I go ahead and wash it that evening when I get home from work and if the clothes aren't dry by the time I go to bed, then they hang out until they dry the next day. I have done this for years and we are all still living. lol

What a smart boy! So many parents these days don't allow for their children to develop those problem-solving techniques by just handing them everything. How refreshing to see this, and it must have been so rewarding for you two when he finally cracked that nut!

I have not had luck leaving clothes on the line overnight. If it is warm enough that they might actually dry, the humidity seems to be too high in my area. Also, I hate to leave them out for too long during high pollen times.

But, if you have low enough dew points overnight, and no allergies, I think it's fine. Just watch out for those surprise rain showers in the early mornings!

I don't think it's bad to leave laundry on the line overnight. I used to do my laundry that way, but for some reason I think it smells funny when it's out all night! That maybe just me though or something weird we have in the air overnight around here. I don't know, but I say if it doesn't smell funny to you then it's okay to leave out overnight!
