Kitchen Tip Tuesdays: Baked potatoes

Baked potato

Here's a quick tip about making baked potatoes:

Be sure to stick the potatoes with a fork right before putting them in the oven. If you poke them ahead of time, the holes sometimes seal over and cause the potato to still explode in the oven! This has happened to my mom when she tried to use the delayed-bake feature on her oven for baked potatoes while she way away from home...

I have never thought about this before, it definitely makes sense though. Great tip!

I've read that you can bake potatoes in the crockpot. That might be a better (and cheaper since a crockpot takes up next to no electricity) alternative if you're not going to be home.

I never knew that they would reseal. That tip will save me some heartache later on, thank you! :)

Now I know why I came home from church a couple of times with potatoes all over the oven! I do occasionally bake potatoes in the crockpot, but they don't get the nice crispy skin (if you eat it, like I do :>). But it does nicely, especially since I won't use time-bake anymore! Thanks for the tip.

I don't have a blog....yet.

But when making baked potatoes, start them in the microwave. Check on it in about 5 mins, see if it's getting soft, if not, add a few minutes to it. take it out when it's soft, or a little before that, and place in oven to crisp up skin, and continue baking, if need be.

That's a good baked potato tip. I like to wrap mine in foil and bake them. They stay hot longer, and you can keep them warm in the oven on low and they won't dry out like unwrapped ones do.

I've never submitted a tip for Kitchen Tip Tuesdays, but I always enjoy reading them.

My tip is this:

We're having taco salads for supper tonight, when chopping the lettuce for them, I went ahead and chopped all of our lettuce for quick lunches the rest of the week. It keeps well in the fridge in a ziplock bag for about a week.

I never knew that about the potatoes. Thanks for offering such a great site.

I thought pricking potatoes was only for when you microwave them. I've baked potatoes plenty of times in the oven without them ever exploding. Guess I got lucky, but now I know better!

I've never pricked potatoes I bake in the oven before. I will from now on!

I used to work in a restaurant, we never pricked the potatoes when baking them in the oven. Just wrapped them in foil and tossed them in. I don't remember them ever exploding, either. Personally, at home I like them rubbed in butter and baked right on the rack, although you want a foil-lined pan on the shelf underneath unless you want a nasty mess in the bottom of the oven (wonder how I know that!).
