From one to two...

Eliyahu with his cake!

Someone at our house turned two this week! :) Here's a picture of Eliyahu with his birthday cake. He looked confused when we sang to him, but he enjoyed seeing the candles and blowing them out. :) Now Yehoshua keeps asking when it will be his birthday (not until April!). :) We keep birthdays pretty simple around here -- just a cake and sometimes dinner guests to share the meal. :)

Pineapple Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Here's a close-up of the cake we made for Eliyahu -- Pineapple Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. It's one of our favorites, but I'd been so busy making pumpkin sheet cakes that I hadn't made a carrot cake recently. :)

Joshua made the cream cheese frosting for on top of the cake, and Eliyahu helped me mix up the cake and then -- his favorite part -- did dishes with me afterwards. That little guy just never tires of washing dishes. :)

RE: Do you buy your kids gifts?

Yes, although we don't have a family tradition of obligatory gift giving on birthdays.

Oh my goodness, I can't

Oh my goodness, I can't believe he's two already! Wow! :)

I am going to have to make this!

I have been wanting a carrot cake! Happy birthday!

birthday cake

why didnt you decorate it like a kids birthday cake? just curious.

RE: birthday cake

Do you mean decorate it with colored frosting?

Part of the reason would be neither of us are artists ;) We also don't use food coloring in most of our food. We rarely break out the food dyes and, imo, a carrot cake with white frosting looks perfect!

Traditions

Do you have any special birthday traditions that you do for/with your children? We love traditions and are trying to think of ideas to do with our little ones as they grow.

RE: Traditions

Picking the meal and dessert would be one. As the kids are getting older allowing them to choose games they wish to play or other activities. Our kids are still pretty young; e.g. Yehoshua is just now able to understand how to play basic card and board games. I don't think Eliyahu quite grasped the idea that this was his "birthday" but free cake is free cake. And who doesn't want to have the honor of spittling all over a fresh cake in hopes of extinguishing burning wax? :P

Free cake

LOL!! Yeah, we had to tell him to stop blowing on the cake after the candles were out (and even after we took them off the cake). ;)

When I still lived with my parents, some of our birthday traditions were choosing the kind of cake we wanted, picking the dinner menu, and not having to do any chores all day! And since I was homeschooled for some of my growing-up years, I would also do extra school work ahead of time so I could have the day off school, too! :)

Yehoshua and Eliyahu are still young enough that they love doing their "chores", and Eliyahu wouldn't know carrot cake from chocolate cake if we asked. :) But as they get older, they'll be better able to choose some fun/favorite things to do and eat on their birthdays... not that we don't do lots of fun stuff every day! :D

O Tammy he looks so cute and

O Tammy he looks so cute and so BIG! I can't believe he is two. It looks like you are like us and prefer a simpler cake - less sugar, colours and so on is our reason. Love, Lucy

Happy Birthday, Eliyahu!

Wow, your little boy is 2 years old already! Time goes so quickly. :) I bet he will look very big when the new baby arrives!! :) And how sweet that he loves to help wash the dishes! I'm sure it blesses your heart to have 2 big helpers.

Happy Birthday!

He's looking like such a big boy! It's great he's such a good helper and he's so blessed to have a mama like you. :-)

Wow he has grown!

Tammy,

I started reading your website before he turned 1 and I can't believe how much older he looks. Sometimes it seems they change overnight- my 22 month old is now wearing 3T clothes and is 30lbs! This time last year she was under 20lbs and only crawling :(

Mmmm! that cake looks yummy.

Mmmm! that cake looks yummy. We keep our birthdays simple here too. Usually the person having the birthday gets to pick what he wants for dinner and then the dessert. As far as gifts go, usually mom and dad get the person a
gift and we kids all go in on one item for the person. Or if our parents are having the birthdays, we kids usually go in on one thing together. It makes it cost efficient (frugal? ;) and it is fun to pick something out together.

Happy Birthday to your Little (getting bigger) Guy!
Homemade cake. . . yum! As a mother and the only cook in the house, I would be so happy just to get a homemade cake alone - no presents necessary - for my birthday!
