Tomorrow evening, the Biblical feast of Trumpets (also known as Rosh Hashanah, or the new year) begins. We'll be having a quiet day of rest at home Thursday, enjoying New Year's Apple Challah and I'm not sure what else (still haven't planned the main course!). :)
Tomorrow will be a busy day of preparation, so I got a head start by making chocolate chip mandelbrot today. Of course, we couldn't wait until tomorrow night to sample it -- but there will still be plenty left, and it's a fun special treat!
Yehoshua and Eliyahu helped me make the mandelbrot. Afterwards, I heard Yehoshua talking on the phone to Nana (Joshua's mom), saying "I helped mama make something today." Nana must have asked what we made, because Yehoshua replied, "Something with chocolate. Chocolate is really... chocolate is really my best." ![]()

Yehoshua got to stir the batter. He loves to help and does a great job. Eliyahu wanted to help, so I gave him the (closed) bottle of lemon juice (I was out of OJ!) and a measuring spoon. Notice Eliyahu's short haircut? I cut his hair last Friday, and he sat so still. He loves haircuts with the electric clippers! Eliyahu likes to be a part of everything that Joshua and Yehoshua are doing, and begs to be included, even in things like showers and haircuts -- things Yehoshua was terrified of at that same age! :)

After the mandelbrot is baked, it has to be sliced and then baked like this, to dry it. Yehoshua and Eliyahu "helped" me slice it... by eating a number of the slices!! It was a big, crumbly, chocolate-y mess... that bib on Eliyahu didn't work well enough. ;) I had already done a lot of the clean-up when I took this picture. :)
Anyway, chocolate chip mandelbrot is easy to make and a great project for the children to help with! :) Because, you know, chocolate is really my best, too. ;)

Rosh Hashanna
Ok... I have to ask it now *grin* Are you guys Jewish? Or do you just follow certain aspects of it?
Adorable!
I like the boys' helping techniques. :-) And the mandelbrot looks so yummy.
To die for!
Looks so yummy! Choc is the best here as well! Funnel Cakes and Choc life would not be the same without them! We will definately try this yummy treat! Looks like it would be great for lunch boxes as well. Erika
So, will Joshua be home from
So, will Joshua be home from work? Is this similar to biscotti? Is it crunchy after you bake it again? Lisa
Question
Is mandelbrot like biscotti or is it the same thing?
Kathleen
Me too
Yeah, I want to know, too! It looks rather similar. :-)
I haven't decided either
I don't make supper on Thursdays, so I don't know what we are going to have. I will make cinnamon raisin challah, though, from the site with the six-strand braiding video. Other than that...I'm still getting used to the new holiday cycle! I have to look at some of the library books for ideas! What will you do, if you don't mind me asking. Do you have any special traditions?
Kathleen
Mandelbrot vs. biscotti, etc...
Anonymous, no, we're not Jewish. We do observe the Biblical sabbath and feast days though! :) We don't feel as though we have to observe any of the extra-Biblical traditions associated with the feasts -- like the new year's apple challah I made -- but holidays are a good excuse to try new recipes or eat yummy things we don't have every day. :) It's fun and makes it extra special. :)
Brandy, oh yes, they know just what to do. ;) I can't start anything in the kitchen without getting lots of "help"... and sometimes (like today, when I wasn't feeling well!) it can be a challenge to willingly accept their help. :)
Lisa, yes, Joshua has the day off work. :)
Mandelbrot is crunchy, but not break-your-teeth kind of crunchy. Biscotti is an Italian word and means "twice-baked" and was originally the same thing as mandelbrot (which means "almond bread" I think) but in recent development (if I am remembering correctly), biscotti was changed slightly to contain less oil/butter, making it a harder kind of crunchy. So mandelbrot is dry and crunchy, but slightly crumbly or easy to bite off. Biscotti can be difficult to bite into, but perfect for dipping into coffee or tea (yuck!). :D
Kathleen, we usually read Scripture, rest (since Trumpets is a sabbath day) and sometimes get together with another family for reading or a meal. I usually try to make at least one "traditional" food just for fun... Yom Kippur is coming up next week, and so I'll post more about that one then. We keep things pretty simple here though. :)
Another question!
Tammy,
Do you blow any sort of trumpet? I have been wondering what to do for that. Go for a walk and blow a whistle really loudly? (I can almost hear God laughing at that one!)
Shana tov!!
Kathleen
About the shofar... :)
No... we don't have a shofar (or modern trumpet, either!). So unless we are with someone who has one, we don't. However, Joshua does a pretty good (voice) imitation of a shofar -- it's hilarious! :)
I'm not really annonymous
Sorry for not putting my name! I'm so used to the blogger thing :)
We had a parishioner bring a shofar to church just last week! It was so awesome.
Jenny.
Joshua's "shofar"
I'd like to hear that!! ;)

Big Hit Here!
Our family Loved the Mendalbrot. Lovely treat for us and very easy to make. Hubby took some to work and they loved it to. So I might make some just for work. I love making treats for hubby to take to work sometimes.
Whole wheat vs white
Hi Tammy!
I'm thinking of making this for my dad for his birthday, and was wondering if wheat was subsitutable for all-purpose do you think?
Thanks for your input. :D
Whole wheat flour in mandelbrot
I'm not sure, though I'm guessing it would work okay. :) Perhaps add slightly less whole wheat flour than the amount of all-purpose flour called for. :)
I tried it and it turned out
I tried it and it turned out well. Dad loved them, saying they tasted just like biscotti...er, mandelbrot. :)
I also subbed the chocolate chips for Andes mint chocolate chunks and they're delicious.
Hopefully he wasn't just saying all that to be nice!
