Kitchen Tip Tuesdays: Soaking Silverware

My kitchen tip this week is about soaking silverware!

In the morning, I like to fill a tall container with cold water (this could be a quart-sized yogurt container, a large cottage cheese container, or any tall cup or glass) and set it in the sink. Throughout the day (or anytime between dish-washings), when silverware is used, just put it handle-up in the big cup of water. It'll soak until you're ready to wash dishes!

This reduces clutter in the sinks and on the counters, and leaves you a nice neat stack of silverware to either wash by hand or put into your dishwasher. :) Even better, if you use a container that already needs washed, you'll be soaking that, too! :)

P.S. Be sure to NOT soak silverware/knives with wooden handles in the water... that puts a lot of extra wear on the wood. :)

Soaking Silverware

What a good tip. I tend to have the silverware in a pile by the sink and it gets rather cluttered and messy. I will definitely do this!

Great tip, Tammy! Bethany

soaking siverware

This would keep my kitchen so much neater. And it would make it easier for the children to clean up and get the silverware totally clean. No more dried on food between the fork prongs! sounds good to me!

That is a good idea, even

That is a good idea, even with a dishwasher, often the silverware gets a little dried out after sitting awhile waiting to be washed!

great idea

I never thought of that, i always dislike handwashing each piece of silverware. I have dishwasher, but on the occasion I hand wash that's a great tip. Thanks.

Great tip

Thanks Tammy. I used this tip this morning and wondered why it had never occured to me before. I usually just put the silverware in a cup in the dishtub but didn't soak them until now. Very useful. Thanks! Staci

Add some bleach to the water--esp if you don't have a dishwasher or dont use heat dry in your dishwasher. Esp during cold and flu season it will help cut down the spread of germs. Just pour a little in when you fill it.

My great aunt and uncle swore that this, plus the heat dry on the dishwasher kept them healthier [measured against years of hand washed dishes] and the both made it healthy, alert, fully functioning till nearly 100!!!!

Frozen Waffles

Hello! Love the tip about the silverware!! Not sure I am doing this right, this is my first time posting to this blog. But, here is the link to my tip!!

We do the same thing!

And, if the glass has a film in it (like from repeated iced tea uses), we put a splash of bleach in the water. That cleans the glass and makes the silverware sparkle by the end of the day.

I am continuing my series of 10 things to do this week. I'm featuring cookie cutters today.

Hi Tammy.
Thanks for including my tip! I added a link back. Sorry I messed that up. I thought I had not submitted my tip! I guess that's what happens when you work on this late at night.
I appreciate you hosting Kitchen Tip Tuesdays.

Your right, soaking

Your right, soaking silverware and dishes is a huge time saver. My tip this week is for disposing of medicine correctly. So important, since we now know that the medicines end up in our drinking water.

Two in One

Great tip! I do that too as I have no dishwasher.
If you are soaking silverware in a tea/coffee stained mug try adding a bit of baking soda with the water. This gets rid of the tea stains and shines the silverware too.

Thanks for the interesting Kitchen Tip Tuesdays. :)
