Here's a quick and easy soft butter spread recipe! Joshua made this for me, because he was tired of our butter always being too cold to spread on bread (we keep our house cold!).
This spread is really simple -- two parts butter, one part oil, and one part (this is where it gets... exciting!) water.
Yes, we're now spreading water on our bread! Now, if that isn't frugal, I don't know what is! ;)

Great Tip!
What a great recipe/tip! Thanks so much. This saves me from buying two different products regular butter and spreadable butter. Can't wait to go home and try it!

What a fascinating idea. I usually keep butter on the counter, but I don't like the way it gets. I'll have to try this.

butter spread
Ah yes, we tried "making" butter like that before. Mom rather liked it, some thought it was okay, some thought it wasn't that great, but Dad really did NOT like it. So, there went that idea. ; )
Salt
You can also add some salt to enhance the flavor. Just an fyi. I grew up on spreads, so getting used to butter was an adjustment. This is a nice compromise for when you need a spreadable butter, and it makes butter go further and has fewer calories.
wow awsome!
thanks tammy and joshua for posting this. i HATE hard butter, but dont like spreads, so i would keep mine at room temp in a sealed container and the butter has got moldy on me a couple times YUCK so, this would be great! i am currently out of oil but i will do this as soon as i can replace it!
You have detritus in your
You have detritus in your butter! Butter alone shouldn't grow mold.
Really?
That sounds great!
Flavor It
From Keren T:
My husband and I LOVE flavored butter! Of course, it's not as healthy when we want to eat so much, but it does get eaten and lots of compliments.
Just mix your flavor of choice (so far we've used honey and maple syrup, though I'm hoping to try garlic, fruit, and even meat). You have to use soft butter (or margarine), so Tammy's recipe will work great!
butter bell crock
Another solution is a butter bell crock. You keep it on the counter and the butter stays cool, but not cold... nice and spreadable without going rancid.
We avoid vegetable oils for health reasons, so this might work for those of you who don't want to dilute your butter for whatever reason... :)
Great tip! Thanks!
I have wondered if those butter bell crocks really work. So thank you for the post Rowannrose. Real butter tastes so much better than margarine. Have you ever opened margarine and took in a good sniff?? You can smell the chemicals in it. At least the stuff I used to buy! So we have went to butter and spreadable butter. This will sure help our pocketbook!
By the way
Here is another recipe showcasing your pancakes! We are still waiting for the recipe. They look wonderful.

Butter Bell Crocks
We also use a butter bell on the counter in the summer. The butter is spreadable and keeps for weeks without turning rancid :)
Spreadable butter
The pancake recipes are coming this week! Stay tuned. :)
Elizabeth, do you avoid olive oil, as well? I'm curious as to what fats you do cook with, besides butter, obviously. :)
I had never heard of a Butter Bell Crock before, so I looked them up... very interesting! :) I wonder if our house would be too cold for that, since our butter is usually still fairly hard at "room temperature"... :)
vegetable oils
Wow, you must have a colder house than us! Hehe.
We do use extra virgin olive oil in moderation, but the main fats I use are butter and coconut oil (which stays firm like butter). We avoid the more common vegetable oils like canola, soybean, and corn because of their instability during heating, and the cancer-causing free-radicals that are the result of the way these oils are processed.
I tried it
Hi Tammy & everyone else...
I tried your spreadable butter recipe. and... My husband loves it!! So it is definitely a winner in our house. Thanks so much for the recipe. Our butter will definitely last longer and save us a few dollars now. Thank you Thank you!
Thanks
Hi, Tammy! I just wanted to let you know that I gave this recipe a try, and it is wonderful! I hate using margarine, but I bought it for my hubby because he likes the "fake stuff" better! (yuck, I know!) I found out he only likes it because it's soft and spreadable. So now that I have made this spreadable butter for him, he uses this all the time! I am so glad to have him off of that terrible stuff! My only problem now is figuring out what to do with the rest of that margarine! :P
