This week, Yahweh blessed us with a beautiful highchair! I'm still in shock over how nice it is, and how nice it feels to eat dinner without holding a one-year-old on my lap! :)
We had been using a portable high chair that strapped to a regular chair, but the tray constantly fell off. Rather than pick food up off the floor, I had been holding Eliyahu at mealtimes. We didn't want to sacrifice the money ($60+) or space (have you seen how HUGE high chairs are these days?!) for a new one. I really wanted one of the ones like my parents have: small, metal, and durable.
As it happens, I was listening to Tradio (trying to sell something -- this was the first time I had listened in years!) and heard someone advertize a metal highchair for $5.
Turns out, her husband had completely refinished it and it looks basically like new, even though it's one of those ancient metal chairs with a stainless steel tray! And they only wanted $5! What a bargain.

It's even green, like my kitchen curtains! :)
Eliyahu loves it. I think he's eating more at mealtimes, now that he gets to sit in it! And our old highchair is going "bye bye". Yay! :)

How nice!
Since I hope to have littles ones soon, I'm keeping all of your experiences and advice in mind. I guess it sure wouldn't hurt to start shopping yard sales for baby items, or checking with my mother to see what she's saved.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Yay!! God is *so good* to
Yay!! God is *so good* to provide for us, isn't He?? :-D What a blessing!
Tradio
I think I remember reading that you are in Ohio. I am too and my local radio station has a show called Tradio. Could it be that we live near each other?
Congrats on the good deal for the highchair too! I'm beyond the childbearing years and look forward to being a grandmother (but not anytime soon!). I kept my kids' highchair so that we could use it for my future babies.
That looks like my old
That looks like my old highchair!
High chairs
Brandy, thanks for commenting! :) I've kept baby stuff pretty simple... since we first were living in a tiny apartment, and even now, I just like to have a house that isn't cramped. ;)
Abigail, He sure is! :)
Beth, yes, we're in Ohio! :) I'll send you an email about where, exactly. I think Tradio (or "trading post" as it's sometimes called) is done on many radio stations, in many states, though. :) When we lived in Missouri, they had (I think) 30 minutes of it, every day!!! Here it's only 10 minutes on weekdays, I think. :)
And my mom still has an old high chair from her children (not unlike this one we got) which we use for my boys when we visit. :D
Martha, LOL! :)
Mine was free too!
i know what you mean about not wanting to spend the money, i have a FREE highchair that i recieved on freecycle. its TOO big (wish mine was as small as yours) but it was free and i cant justify spending the money on a new one.
my mother in law is going to make me a new seat as its that weird plastic and its starting to crack. but free ALWAYS makes something extra pretty in my eyes!
what a cool chair. i have never heard of tradio but i am on freecycle and craigs list... are you?
A great buy!
You will be so glad you bought this high chair. A friend of mine raised 12 kids with one like this, but the plastic try on mine broke after 2.5 kids. Plus, the new ones are SO big, people are constantly tripping over the legs in our kitchen. You can still order ones like this from restaurant supply stores but they are expensive.
High chairs
Anonymous, I agree about the SIZE of modern high chairs... I suppose it's a reflection of the increasing size of homes?? :)
Kristy, I'm a member of a couple freecycle groups, but I don't actively read. (I did post a request about a high chair, but got no responses.) I usually don't take the time to read freecycle, or listen to Tradio, unless I have a specific need. The funny thing was that I wasn't actually trying to find a high chair, I happened to be trying to advertize something on Tradio to sell, and heard the ad! I hadn't listened to Tradio for years!! :D So it was definitely a blessing from Yahweh. :D
I like it!
I think your sons high chair looks so much better than the ones they make now days!
Nice find!
I had an older one too - all wood, and I loved it. I just donated it as dd is in a booster seat now. That metal one is a treasure. I can't believe what good shape it is in. It looks brand new in the pictures. Someone did an excellent restoration.
