My latest frugal addiction

Homemade Bagels

My most recent "frugal addiction" is... homemade bagels! After our most recent guest chef, Bethany, shared about her homemade bagels, we made some.

I had never made bagels before, since for some reason I thought they were really complicated. They're not. They're actually really easy! And as might be guessed, hot, fresh bagels from the oven just don't even compare to bagels from the store!!

One batch of homemade bagels makes 12 large bagels. I was paying $5.00 for an equivalent amount of bagels from the grocery store! Our homemade ones tasted so much better, and I'm sure they're healthier, too. After my first homemade bagel, I knew I was going to have difficulty every buying a bagel from the store again.

I made bagels one time years

I made bagels one time years ago, and they were soooooo good. Your post just might have inspired me to try my hand at them again. They weren't too difficult, although mine did look a little lopsided!

YUM. Looks like I've found

YUM. Looks like I've found my Sunday morning recipe. I'll post back to review it!

I knew you'd like these

In knew you would like this recipe. I made these last week when you first posted the guest chef recipe. I agree 100%...I doubt ,also, if I ever buy another bagel from the store! These are just so yummy. I am anxious to begin experimenting with flavors, and even make breakfast sandwiches (egg) and lunch sandwiches (cheese or chicken) with them! Thanks again for posting this recipe! Tammy, I love your site, and so does my family! God bless you!

I've wanted to make bagels

I've wanted to make bagels for a long time and now this has me almost tasting them. Off to print the recipe. :)

Bagel help!

I made these today -- very, very easy! (even for me) We ate a few right out of the oven -- but they seemed a tad "doughy". What did we do wrong? They tasted way better than a store bought bagel, by far. I had already planned on asking how we could alter them to make a honey wheat bagel? thanks!

Bagels

Ruth, thanks! I saw your comment that you had tried them! It made me even more impatient about making them myself!! :)

Anonymous, about doughy bagels -- perhaps they needed to bake just a little longer? Mine were browned. My bread loaves usually are baked at 350 for about 30-35 minutes and come out great, as did these bagels. If your bread normally takes longer, maybe these bagels will, too...?

As far as honey-wheat, here's just what I would try (I haven't done this yet, though!) -- leave out the sugar, and add a couple tablespoons of honey. Substitute some or all of the white flour with whole wheat flour.

Those look AWESOME, Tammy! I

Those look AWESOME, Tammy! I think I'm going to make some bagels this morning. By the way, checked out the rest of your blog this morning and WOW, have you ever been busy!!!

Can you double the recipe?

Can you double the recipe? I've made the recipe three times already and would like to make bigger batches so I don't need to make them as often. :)

Doubling the bagel recipe...

Yes! Actually, I have doubled the recipe, but what I like doing even better is making 1.5 times the recipe, and just making the same number of bagels, so they're larger (doesn't take extra cookie sheets that way, either!).
