Tammy, The Super Saver!

Tammy is frugal. Or more properly: Tammy is Frugal (TM). Not cheap, mind you--if there is an item of need or heavy use she is willing to save so we can purchase a high quality, durable item that is enjoyable to use. Yet Tammy is always on the lookout for a good sale on items we frequently use.

Knowing Tammy's knack for frugality, I should have raised my eyebrows a couple more times when she asked if I would take her shopping tonight. I cannot even remember the last time she asked me to take her shopping! (Note from Tammy: I usually hate shopping!)

  Tammy's desired destination? Krogers.

Purpose? Crazy savings that her friend Crystal pointed out in her blog. (Catherine also blogged about this special in her blog!)

How do I define crazy savings? How about paying $27.92 for $173.14 worth of staple groceries -- that is a savings of $145.22 (or 84% discount).

Yes, you read that right. We paid $27.92 for $173.14 worth of food.

The best news is that if you act fast, you may be able to cash in on these savings as well, but you probably don't have much time (our Kroger sales end on Sunday). The following sales, discounts, and coupons are how we saved $145.22 on food.

  • Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese, normally $1.17, is on sale for $1.09.
  • Kraft Miracle Whip, normally $3.43 per 32 oz. jar, is on sale for $2.00 (2 for $4).
  • Kraft Cheese, normally $3.09 per 8 oz. block, is on sale for $1.67 (3 for $5).
  • Kraft Cheese coupon, buy 3 get $1 off (coupon from dispenser in the Kraft cheese section)
  • Kroger Bonus Coupon: Double the $1 off coupon*
  • Kroger's is having a sale on select Kraft items, purchase 8 items and get $7 back.

We use a lot of these items, so we stocked up. In total, we purchased 72 items. This is how it broke down (the "$7 off per 8 items" sale is added at the very end):

Kraft Philly Cream Cheese (8 oz. block)
Packages Purchased: 28
Normal Price: $1.17; $32.76 total before savings
Sale Price: $1.09; $30.52 sale price
Sale Savings: $2.24

Kraft Miracle Whip and Mayo (32 oz jar)
Jars Purchased: 13
Normal Price: $3.43; $44.59 total before savings
Sale Price: $2.00; $26.00 sale price
Sale Savings: $18.85

Kraft 8 oz. Blocks of Cheese (Sharp Chedder, Monterey Jack with Jalapenos, Mozzarella)
Packages Purchased: 31
Normal Price: $3.09; $95.79 total before savings
Sale Price: $1.67; $51.77 sale price
Sale Savings: $44.02

Coupons: $9
Double Coupons: $9
Total Coupon Savings: $18
Price after Sale Price & Coupons: $33.77
($1.09 per package)
Total Coupon and Sale Savings on Kraft Cheese: $62.02

To quickly summerize, before we include the "Buy 8 items, get $7 off" sale, our total looked something like this:

Normal Price: $173.14
Sale Price: $90.92
Savings: $82.85

We didn't save much on the cream cheese (we typically get this at Aldi for $0.89 per 8 oz. block), but the Miracle Whip sale was a pretty good savings. The big savings came from the cheese, where after the sale price and coupons we saved over $62 on cheese. The cheese price is pretty good for name brand cheese. At best we typically can get Kroger cheese on sale once in a blue moon for 10 for $10 and Aldi's cheese is typically $1.49 per 8 oz. block so we did really well with the cheese!

We typically don't buy name brand items, so our savings are kind of deceiving at this point. $90.29 is about what we would typically pay for these items when we do our typical, "Stock up on sales" shopping strategy. So not a bad trip to the store, but not extraordinary at this point.

Where the big savings come from are the, "Buy 8 items, get $7 off" sale Krogers is having on select Kraft items. You guessed it, everything we purchased is on that list. We purchased 72 items... yes, the picture is becoming much clearer now... which means we had 9 groups of 8 items. 9 multiplied by $7 is a $63 savings! So after the Kroger special (which ends Sunday night for us), our total now looks like this:

Sale Price: $90.92
$7 off (per 8 items) Discount: $63
Final Price: $27.92

To put this into perspective, the normal price for each of these items averages out to $2.40 each. After all our savings on sales, coupons, and discounts we paid $0.39 per item -- a whopping $2.01 savings per name brand item!

Now that is what I call crazy savings! Based on our normal sale shopping tactics Tammy, at minimum, just saved our family over $60!

You will need to pardon me now because I have some shopping to do on Amazon.com ;)

My fridge (I still have butter from a sale on that back in December!)

*We were a little confused that all of our "save $1 on 3" cheese coupons were being doubled, but the cashier assured us that it was supposed to be happening that way (we did the u-scan, and were there for about 25 minutes!).

I think it so awesome that you were able to do this. We try to do it too and my fridge and freezer often look like yours :-) I have a harder time finding the good sales now that I live in rural Oklahoma but when I lived in a big city in Texas and was close to Albertson's and Kroger I would shop sales like this even more.

What a great deal! Too bad we don't have a store like that around here!

I have to admit I am STUNNED at the incredible savings! Years ago, when my husband and I were in college and we lived in KY, we shopped at Kroger all the time using coupons, but we NEVER saw deals like that one! Way to go Tammy!
Now we basically use Aldi, a local organic farm, and our natural foods co-op for everything. We LOVE Aldi! They even carry organic soy milk now. Too bad there are no Krogers here, or I would be taking advantage of this deal!

Happy Birhday to you Tammy! I hope you celebrate your birth with lots of love, laughter and family today.

In our home, space is very limited, so we rarely "stock up" on anything. There just isn't room to store much of anything.

Great savings, though! Amazing!

Hi Tammy

Thanks for visiting my blog. let me know how the foccaccia turns out. I love focaccia.

Those breakfast balls look delicious - I'll have to try them sometime.

We don't have Kroger OR Aldi around here so I'm really jealous. :( I try to make up by buying in bulk at Sams, some Walmart clearances and then other local grocery store's sales but never get deals as good as you did! You practically robbed the store!!!! LOL

In one of your pictures, I noticed you had a huge stash of butter in your fridge. Do you ever freeze it instead of just refridgerating it?

Also, a few months back you had recipes for cranberries and I meant to comment and tell you that you can very successfully freeze cranberries whole, unrinsed and in their original bag. I do it all the time when they go on sale and then try to use them up within a few months. They are a convenient and versatile berry and I love having them on hand for baking and such.

Great post, loved the pics and the fact that savings can still be found in a grocery store somewhere on this earth!

Excellent work, y'all! Your cashier was right: Kroger does double coupons. In my area it's only up to & including .50, but lucky ducks like you get $1 doubled! Don't you love the feeling of saving money? ;)

Wow, you get great deals there. I wish we had Krogers up here!

Our "no name" creamcheese, if on sale, is $3 for 2.

Never even heard of a Krogers.

Ever heard of a Market Basket?

I stocked up on the cream cheese and Kraft cheese at my Kroger this weekend too! My DH kept telling me that he felt like he was "ripping them off" because the deals were nearly too good to be true! LOL!

Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2007-02-05 07:46.

What awesome deals! Boo-hoo - we don't have a Kroger's here. And NONE of the grocery stores in our area double coupons! But they're building an Aldi just down the road from us, so I can't wait to check it out!
Tammy, do you freeze cheese? If so, exactly how do you wrap it and how does it keep? What about sliced American (for grilled cheese)? That stuff can be expensive (especially the white - my girls just can't get a taste for the orange and, frankly, neither can I), and I'd like to stock up when it's on sale.

Amazing! My MIL and I are going to try to take advantage of this sale today and tomorrow! :)

I can't hardly believe this! WHY, WHY don't I have a Krogers?!?!?!?!

I wish I could get such good deals but I am lucky with the occasional free toothpastes! ;-)

Thank you for stopping by my blog. It was very nice to hear from you!

Tammy,

I've enjoyed reading your blog over the past few months, but have never left a comment. I just had to leave one this time to congratulate you on such a great shopping deal. I was able to find some wonderful deals in our local area this week on Cottonelle toilet paper ($1.00 per 4 pk. double roll) and Luvs diapers (less than $3.00 for a 34 & 40 ct. pkg. of size 3's & 4's - yes we use disposable rather than cloth, but this figured out to be 7.5 - 9 cents per diaper w/tax). Anyway, I just wanted to point out to you and your readers that the Walgreens rebate booklet this month has some very good deals for FREE. Also, I recently came across a coupon website at www.savvyshopperdeals.com. They have a lot of info. for people who live in the Utah area, however I have benefitted from the info they post about Walgreens, Target and Kmart stores which we have in our area. Your readers who have Albertson's grocery stores in their area could benefit tremendously from this website.

I got 8 cream cheese for 1.34 with tax.

They didn't have the cheese coupons but paying 7.76 including tax for 8 pkg is still a really good deal. I got 32 pkg of cheese and 24 pkg of cream cheese.

Actually, I don't usually buy much at Kroger's. I'm a sale-shopper, and if there's no sale, then I get it at Aldi's. :) Sometimes even with a sale, Aldi is cheaper! :)

I can sympathize with the commenter who hasn't much storage space. In our pervious home, we had very little storage space and I ended up storing a lot of things in boxes in the one large closet we had (off of the bathroom!). It was a bother to get to anything though! :|

Court, thanks for the cranberry info! I ended up washing and sorting my berries before I froze them, because some were a little... too ripe. (Rotten!) :)

I don't usually freeze butter, because I just have a small freezer and it's full of meat or cheese (from sales). My fridge, on the other hand, usually has extra room. Since we just have two little children, I have the luxury of extra fridge space!! :)

Sara, we found out from a relative who works at Kroger, that the double coupon (up to a dollar) was just for Thurs-Sun of last week. I didn't know that when we went, though. Otherwise it's up to 50 cents.

But that's better than Wal-mart, where I found out they don't double coupons at ALL. :|

Zan, no, never heard of Market Basket. :)

Becky, yes, I freeze cheese. I freeze mine in blocks in the original wrappers, because my freezer space is limited. I have heard that shredded cheese freezes well also, though. :) I've never frozen the American sliced cheese. I usually have room in my fridge to store a couple packages, which lasts us until the next sale. :)

When I need cheese for a recipe, say pizza, I thaw the cheese in the fridge (or, in a pinch, in a bowl of water -- takes just 10 minutes or so) and then grate. It gets crumbly when it's been frozen, so it doesn't exactly shred. It still works great for pizza, casseroles, etc. You would never know the difference, after it's baked/cooked/melted! :)

Anonymous, what store was the Luvs and Cottonelle from? Thanks for the information! We don't have Walgreens, but we have Rite-Aid and they often have free-after-rebate items. :)

Just thought I'd add a comment to freezing grated cheese.... it tends to freeze in a big chunk that is hard to break apart, UNLESS you toss it with flour. =) When I grate my cheese, I add some flour to the bag, mix it around, then freeze it. That keeps the shreds seperate and easy to use.

Suzeq
Awesome Tammy! Did you know you can freeze butter and cream cheese? The cream cheese however, may not be quite as creamy, like to spread on things, but it will work perfectly when used in cooking & baking and butter- well it is the same. I buy these items in bulk at my local warehouse club & freeze with no problems. God Bless!

Yes, suzeq! :) However, I usually have more extra space in my fridge than in the freezer section, so I just keep them there. :) Meats get my freezer space. :)

You only have 2 children and you bought that much stuff? I thought for the amount of stuff you got, you had at least 8!

I like Kraft block cheese. I freeze butter, and shredded cheese, that's about it. (of course meats) Thankfully we have a deep freezer.

Can't stand Miracle whip, got to have Hellman's!!

Well, what can I say? We love cheesecake, we use lots of cheese... I actually should have bought more of the blocks of cheese, because I ran out of mozzarella after only a couple months!

Love reading about your deals. My husband and I have three boys and the checkout people at the grocery store call me the queen of coupons. I love love love seeing how much money we can save each week on specials on top of double coupons. We don't have Krogers here but we have Giant Eagle and Foodland, they both double coupons. I had a gentlemen behind me in line one time say to me "I hope your husband appreciates you" :), which made me smile, he can't wait to ask how much we saved each week :). It can be done :).

Tammy, not sure if you thought of this or not. But you can remove the butter from the boxes and freeze them that way, Maybe you'll have the room then?

We use the unsalted butter, so it doesn't stay very long in the fridge.

Maybe you guys can look for a deep freezer? That would be a good investment. (at least I think so) you can put it down in the basement. And use it for the "overflow."

Submitted by Jules on Sat, 2008-03-15 07:39.

I agree w.the last anonymous. You can take the sticks of butter out of the box...that way you aren't limited to where to put them.

We also use just the unsalted butter. The Salt in the butter is just a preservative. I've switched from salted butter to unsalted, no change in taste.

Definitely agree w/a deep freezer, it's a great investment. Definitely a good thing!

Think of all the meals you could store!
