Someday I really will learn to always, always check my sales receipt before leaving the grocery store.

Those healthy boxes of Kashi cereal that I thought I was splurging on (for a snack "for the children", of course |
By the time I was home and getting everything put away and looked at my receipt, it was 8:30 pm and I had already opened one of the boxes. I was actually disappointed in the cereal, so you might imagine the sinking feeling I felt when I looked at the receipt and saw that it had cost $4.59 and NOT $2.
Two dollars is a lot to spend on a box of cereal, even "healthy" cereal, when I can make homemade granola or oatmeal for so much less.
Why, oh why, do I pinch pennies, only to waste money on cereal that doesn't even taste very good?
Thankfully, I can return the other boxes. I'll ask my mom for her Kroger sale flyer from last week, in the hopes that I really was charged the wrong price. (After all, the cereal I bought was on two separate displays with a big sign about the price.)
But most likely, I'll just end up having to try to enjoy a five-dollar box of breakfast cereal. And I think I'll remember to always, always check the receipt. I hope. :)

Not really on sale
Hi Tammy,
I always hate that too. It has happened a couple times, and when it does I have called and talked, very politely and confused, to customer service. Often if the sign is up but it rang up differently, even if the sign should have been taken down and was not, they will refund the difference to you.
Oh, and in California there is a law that if it rings up wrong and you catch it, it is free. So if it is on sale and rings up at full price, you get it for free - I got free Fruit Loops this way....

Price
Hi Tammy! Often if the product is marked in correctly (like with the sign right above hte product), the store will honor it because it was their mistake. Next time to go to Kroger, just go to the service desk and explain what happened. Most likely they'll either refund the entire amount or just charge you the $2. This has happened to me before and stores are usually quick to rectify the situation.
From Kashi to Good Friends
I LOVE Kashi good friend cereal with it's high fiber content. I eat it almost every day.
When I was still teaching school, I'd eat breakfast during my free period, so I'd keep a box of Kashi near my desk. My students (high school age) got into EVERY DAY!! I explained that it was high fiber and 'healthy' and they still snacked on it!
Ok, now fast forward to my house now... full of boy-toddlers. Do you think I get to eat my cereal ALONE???? Hardly! My children LOVE my healthy cereal. They sneak it whenever my back is turned.
I guess it's the forbidden fruit theory... the forbidden fiber hhahahaaa

Kroger cereal sale
I thought I saw that in a display on sale, too, at our Kroger. I would definitely call them and ask and if it was on sale take it in and get your money back! I know I was at Meijer once and thought I got this great deal on trail mix at $2 a bag...it was $5 a bag! Eeek!!
I always wondered how Kashi cereal tasted. Maybe I will try some when I have a coupon.

Sale prices
I would talk to the customer service too. I was a cashier for a year, in two different grocery stores, and they both had policies that if their tages were misleading, wrong, or it rang in the computer at the wrong price, that you either got the lowest price, or the item for free. It's worth looking into...
One time I saw some pizza sauce in very nice glass jars on sale for $0.25. I knew it must be a mistake, but I took a bunch anyways. It ended up being last-week's sale, but they still had to give it to me. From $2, to $0.25 is my kind of shopping! ;-)
Something similar
Something similar happened to me this past Friday at our base exchange. All their Christmas candles were 75% off so I loaded my cart with all kinds of stuff. Well when I got in the car and looked at the recipt, I noticed 2 errors. One, I got charged twice for one candle and that candle was still being scanned at 50% off. So I marched right back in that store and got $9.75 back. When I got home I looked at the recipt again and saw that the 4 packages of tealight candles I bought were all scanned at 50% off not 75%! Grrrr... So, I plan on going back today and getting my $6 back on that....that's if I can find the recipt!!!!! LOL. It's around here somewhere...

Cereal price
I hate it when things like that happen. It is so discouraging when you plan and make a list to use coupons and then you discover they didn't ring something up right. The other day I had 4 soup coupons and bought 4 soups, but when I looked at the receipt later, only 3 of the coupons rang up. You have to babysit the cashier, but its so hard to know if things are right, because it happens so fast and then people are waiting in line behind you, which makes me nervous. I just have to let it go, because its not worth the time and gas to go back and get it straightened out sometimes, and sometimes its too late to do anything about it. I have found that I usually make up the difference later with an even better sale with coupons, etc. I would definitely take them back and try to get your money back in this situation, because its a lot of money in this case.
Kroger's store policy is if
Kroger's store policy is if they charge you incorrectly, you get it free. Walmart's is if the price is wrong, you get $3 or the item free whichever is less.
I've been very disappointed with Kashi cereal. I tried their special oatmeal but it is disgusting! I haven't liked the cold cereal I bought either.
I make no-bake cookies out of bad cereal, the ones you cook on the stove. Or a Kashi based "rice crispy" treat. Or any oatmeal cookie recipe. Or you can crush it with a rolling pin and bake it into multigrain bread to make it taste like the fancy $4 a loaf ones with all the seeds and nuts. Can you tell I've made this mistake before? My son is on a diet that precludes most cold cereals, so we've tried quite a few different brands that didn't have the additives he can't have. So far our big hit is Walmart brand cornflakes. The cereal...
Thanks for all the helpful advice, everyone. I posted an update here, since I know some people don't read comment sections! I really appreciate the time you all took to respond. :)
