Decluttering ecouragement

Last week, I signed up for Beth Dargis' weekly "Simplicity Tips" email list. By doing so, I got a free download of her 2007 Declutter Calendar. Each weekday has a suggestion of something you may need to take a few minutes to declutter.

I especially like the fact that she didn't just list "things", but went into details. For example: "Soap -- Travel, decorative, bad smelling."

I have a personal dislike for clutter, and so whenever I happen to have travel bars of soap, fancy soaps, etc. I almost always make sure those get used first! I have been known to pick up bags of hotel soaps at garage sales (for free; I wouldn't pay for those annoying nuisances!) and bring them home and use them 'til they're gone!! :) And yes, by all means: If you have bad-smelling soap, get rid of it!!

Give yourself a time limit. "If I haven't used this in a week, I'm never going to use it. (I've already had it for years.)" Giving myself a time limit usually either motivates me to actually use the thing or else realise that it's worthless (to me).

Another example: "Hangers -- Wire ones that tangle, too many." So often we end up with a "collection" of a good thing that's so huge it hampers our space and makes an easy organization task into a nearly impossible one.

Beth's website also had some organization resources, and you can visit Beth's blog here. I know there are probably a lot of organization resources online (although I basically never have time to actually search for those sorts of things!) but I like Beth's simple, "one little thing at a time" approach to decluttering, organizing, and simplifying! :)

Thanks for this reference Tammy. I signed up to Beth's blog straight away.

I looove to declutter, but with four kids there always seems to be plenty of 'stuff' about the place.

We have finished our family now, short of a miracle, (the kids are 12, 10, 8 and nearly 4) so I am really enjoying blessing other people with our baby stuff.

I do like the reference to stinky soap. My kids buy Christmas and Father's Day gifts at their school (it's a fundraiser) and DH always receives soap with "Dad" on it that really stinks. Why does cheap soap for men *always* smell so bad?

I'll have to check out that calendar!

As for decluttering, I'm gearing up to attack things with a vengence. The Lord may be moving us again soon (which would be 3 times in 3 years! Whew!) so I am going to begin decluttering this week. As far as my things go, I'm going to be very strict. If it hasn't been used, read, seen, or even thought of in 6 months, it's going to GoodWill or Salvation Army. Maybe moving once a year is the Lord's way of reforming me as a pack rat! :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Kate, MrsA, and Johanna! Wow, Johanna, sounds like you have a plan! :) If we moved more often, we'd probably have less stuff, too! :)
