In Keeping a Clean Home, Part 1, I gave my tips and suggestions for making housecleaning less time-consuming. Here are the details about how my home actually gets cleaned. Let's start with what's often the most difficult aspect of keeping a clean home: Getting motivated!
Bluntly put, keeping a clean home will take time. Homes just don't magically stay clean! The main ingredient in my "clean house" is some hard work! I don't just wait until I feel like cleaning, or feel like I have "extra" time and can spend some time cleaning.
Motivating Idea #1: Make a list. Make a detailed list of what you need to do or would like to do. Then you have the option of starting with a few easy tasks (so you can have something to cross off and feel better more quickly!) or starting with the least pleasant tasks (so you can get them over with right away!).
Having a list will free you from worrying about forgetting something. It will help to you work efficiently. (For example, you can make one trip upstairs instead of two, because you won't forget what all needed to be done there.) You also get the satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment that comes with crossing things off your list!
Motivating Idea #2: Work first, play later. I work more quickly when I'm looking forward to a "treat" at the end. Whether it's a game with the children, a hot shower, a cup of tea, some cheesecake, or computer time, cleaning before enjoying leisure time ensures that the cleaning actually gets done!
Spending time online is probably the biggest hinderance to a clean house, in my case. If the children go down for their naps or go to bed for the night and I decide to use the computer before I clean, the cleaning doesn't get done. My general practice is to devote time to my family and our home before turning on the computer. My computer time is limited, so I try to streamline my tasks in that area, as well.
Motivating Idea #3: Have guests into your home regularly. Besides the fact that showing hospitality is a Christian's opportunity to bless others, having guests into your home is a great motivation to maintain a clean house! I don't always expect my house to be immaculate when we have guests, but I do love inviting someone into a clean home. When I know that we're having company in a couple days, it's a great motivation to work extra hard around the house. We try to invite company over at least once a week, although sometimes something (like illness) prevents that from happening weekly. However often you entertain others in your home, it's fun to clean with hospitality in mind!

Motivating Idea #4: Get out from under "overwhelmed". I am usually caught up on cleaning, and I like to tackle jobs as soon as possible so I can forget about them and go on enjoying life! I don't think most people can really relax and enjoy leisure time when they're surrounded by dirt (or clutter) and have a to-do list that's a mile long.
It's easier to stay "caught up" than to get "caught up", but sometimes even the most organized, hard-working people get a little overwhelmed.
This has happened to me on occasion, where I felt as though I was just getting buried in work! As soon as I would get one thing done, two more things (like, finding mold in the house, discovering a leaky bottle of oil in the cupboard, etc.) seemed to pop up. I was also newly pregnant at the time, and felt constantly exhausted.
As weeks went by and I continued to feel overwhelmed, I finally asked for some help. My two sisters came over for a day and they played with Yehoshua (then 1 year old) and helped me tackle my long list of chores.
With all of us working, it only took a few hours before I started feeling like I could see the light at the end of the tunnel! I was so thankful for their help, and the time they spent helping enabled me to feel energized enough to maintain tidyness and cleanliness.
If you feel depressed or overwhelmed, and all your efforts seem to just get swallowed up by more work, perhaps someone could come over to help you for a day. Perhaps you could get a sitter for some or all of the children while you spend some time "catching up". Depending on your situation, you might just need an hour or two of help from your husband or a friend. You might need a whole day, or you might need to streamline your routines and make a schedule that works for your home. If you feel overwhelmed, getting a little caught up can help you get back on track to keeping your house clean again.
Motivating Idea #5: Pray and prioritize. Without help from our heavenly Father, trying to keep a clean and orderly house in our own strength can cause pride and/or feelings of failure. Pray for wisdom in choosing how to develop some sort of cleaning schedule or routine. Pray for strength, energy, and motivation to actually put these things into practice -- because it's hard work!! Pray that you will give God the glory for your lovely home, and that you will use it to spread His love to your family and others. Pray about your priorities, and remember to keep some things above cleaning (like educating your children, spending time with your husband, etc.) and some things below it (like personal leisure time) so that your house will stay clean without going to extremes.

Motivation
You're welcome, Tanya. :) I especially liked writing out all these motivating things, because I need help remembering them sometimes!! :)
I spend a lot of time
I spend a lot of time overwhelmed and unmotivated. *sigh* I find to-do lists overwhelming, too. A "did do" lists helps me to not feel so overwhelemd and to see that I CAN accomplish things. But when I do need reminding that I MUST accomplish specific things I find it helpful to do a "two by two" to do list: write down just two tasks that I need completed. Do them. Cross them off and write two more. I have NO idea why something as basic as housework must be broken down so much for me but it's something I've battled with for my whole life!
Anyway, good tips and motivation.:-D

Ruth's motivation tips
Ruth, thanks so much for sharing your tips! See, everyone is motivated by different things, and I love hearing others' ideas!
Housework may seem "basic" but it requires a lot of thought and self motivation!! :)
I agree!!
I completely agree with all of you ideas here!! The ONLY one that really motivates my son, though, is having guests in our home. LOL!! He's so fearful that someone will see his messy room! HAHAHA!!! You should see that boy clean when he knows we are expecting company! One day I told him that I was going to start inviting people over EVERY day- he just looked at me in terror!! LOL!!
Wonderful ideas, Tammy! Keep up the great work!

Having guests over
Thanks, Mrs. U!
It seems like having guests over does one fo two things: forces a person to keep a cleaner house, or, just helps them get comfortable with everyone seeing their mess!! ;)
Lets play pretend...
playing pretend isn't just for kids....either that or i'm just a big kid- which is possible. But I have an immaculate home. Here's what i do:
I pretend while I'm cleaning that I'm cleaning because somebody i really admire or want to impress is coming to my house and will be awed by my cleanness. I imagine that i will show off every detail- the meticulously kept file cabinets, the neatly folded pajama drawers- everything. I imagine that the person that i show these things to will be very impressed with my superior cleaning and organizational skills, and that people will want to make their homes just like mine. Oprah or Martha Stewart is a good bet, but anyone will do, famous or not.
Don't actually show off your filing cabinets or other organized areas to visitors- they will think you are nuts.
when i was little my mom would motivate me to clean my toys up for christmas by pretending with me that we were elves and an evil witch had made a giant mess in santa's workshop (my room) and we had to clean it up to help santa and save christmas....it worked every year. might help someone else with their kids.
i agree
i agree i am a stay at home mom and i am expecting my second in oct. and im having trouble keeping my house clean its like one minute its clean, laundry and dishes are done and i feel sooo good. but the minute my messy hubby gets home and showers and cooks and does his thing and after my 2 yr old gets done the house looks discusting there will actually be food every were. i think that if i take your idea and pretend some one is going to come over , then ill deep it clean . my husband and i are newly weds and are in our first home and i want people to feel like we are starting off good.
Motivation and helpers!
One of my favorite motivations for housecleaning is working myself out of a job by working with and training my kids how to clean. They are 8 and 6, and we enjoy working together to keep our house clean. I have not been great about this in the past, and have had too much clutter, so the kids appreciate what a gift a clean home is. We like to 'surprise' Dad with an extra clean house once a week!
We like to talk about how God created a special garden just for Adam on the day that Adam was made (Gen 2:5-8), so that he could bless Adam with a purpose. And this was before the fall and curse...work was and is a blessing from God that gives us purpose and an outlet for expressing the creativity that God gives each one of us. Having a thankful attitude toward work is a major motivator for me!
Here's what I do with my kids:
First, we make a list of the jobs that need to be done. The kids will suggest tasks that they think need to be done and that they want to do. I will write the jobs on a piece of paper, and they will come and put stickers beside each task as they accomplish it.
I will tell them 'come find me when you start __' if they need training or help using a cleaning product. I have gradually trained helpers that can do tasks such as dusting, cleaning the bathrooms, vacuuming, cleaning windows, etc.
They also help me fold and put away laundry.
Besides the great feeling of accomplishment that comes with cleaning, we also enjoy the motivation of good music (or a movie when we fold laundry together). My Mother in Law's family used to listen to the Sound of Music and other musicals on records when they would clean the house. It's so fun to fill the house with music and dance and sing as you work!
My kids are hard workers. I delight in working with them and training them, and they delight in pleasing us and helping to keep our home nice. I plan on turning their own laundry over to them soon, and to start cooking lessons soon with my oldest.
