Keeping a Clean Home, Part 1: How I simplify my cleaning tasks

Shorty asked,

"I can declutter with the best of them but I have a hard time keeping a 'clean' house. Please give me some helpful tips!! ...I have tried so many things but in the end I always go back to my old ways. Help would be great...especially with a growing family! When do you find time to clean with two little ones?"

I'm going to write about this in three different posts. First, I want to talk about some of the things I do to simplify my cleaning tasks in general. I like having a clean house, and I'm willing to invest the time each week to keep it clean.

However, I also want to be efficient and not spend needless hours cleaning. Here are some of the things that help make cleaning easier for me.

1. De-clutter first. De-cluttering (not just re-arranging!) will drastically cut your cleaning time. Imagine only having to move half as many rugs, toys, pieces of furniture, or nick nacks every time you clean.

Ideally, de-cluttering shouldn't take more time than your cleaning routines. If you start with a thoroughly de-cluttered home, you should be able to maintain that level of tidiness and spend most of your "housecleaning time" actually cleaning, with de-cluttering sessions once a month or less (depending on how much you shop!). Incorporate de-cluttering as a way of thinking rather than a task. One of the easiest ways to beat clutter is to be careful about what you purchase.

If you're married, be sure you have your husband's blessing before you do any major de-cluttering, and be sure that the things you're removing are things he won't mind not having! Seek to find a balance between practicality and beauty, and try to present a home that he will love and enjoy!

2. Don't allow shoes to be worn inside. We've done this ever since we were married, and it helps tremendously. Yes, my floors still get dirty. But I don't have to clean them daily, because most of the dirt stays by the door.

At our last home, we just had a rug inside the front door where we kept our shoes. Currently, we have an enclosed porch where there is a little shelf for our shoes. I have known others who store their shoes in their attached garage, on a shelf or bookshelf. The fewer pairs of shoes you own, the easier they will be to store.

We do wear slippers inside. We keep our slippers near our shoes, so when we come inside we can slip on our slippers (or I go barefoot inside a lot!). This is especially nice in the winter when it's cold and drafty.

3. Keep food in the kitchen. We haven't always done this, but now that we have children, this is our rule. We allow sippy cups of water in other rooms. All food has to be eaten at the kitchen table. This means that a lot of the mess stays on the table or on the floor near the table. Our kitchen has linoleum, so clean-up is easier.

4. Use a hand-held vacuum for small messes. My mother-in-law gave me a Dust Buster hand-held vacuum, and I use it daily. It's so convenient to use on the kitchen floor after each meal -- it takes just minutes, and the crumbs don't get dragged all over the room. I would never have the time or energy to pull out my large vacuum cleaner every day, so the hand-held one is my floor-saver! :)

5. Have children seated all the way up to the table (maybe even in a high chair if they're not too big!) and wearing bibs. My children's bibs are stained, but their shirts aren't, and it makes doing the laundry much easier!

6. Wash children's hands and face immediately after each meal. This prevents them from running around, touching things with sticky hands. :)

7. Soak dishes in cold water. If I have a pan or dish that will become difficult to clean by the time I'm ready to wash dishes, I take the couple minutes to run some cold water in it in the kitchen sink so it can soak. I don't always wash the dishes immediately after a meal, but it's much faster to wash them when they've been soaked!

8. Line trash cans with several bags at a time. This keeps the trash cans cleaner and makes it easier to take out the trash. It only takes a couple extra minutes to put the additional bags in when you're already getting one!

9. Allow your dishes to air dry instead of towel-drying them. My basic dish washing routine is to wash them all during the day (or right before bed) and stack them in the drainer. They stay there over night, and the next morning I have dry dishes to put away. I can fit quite a few in the drainer, but if there are really too many I will towel dry the big ones. :)

10. Keep things in handy locations. For example, paying bills is easier when the check book, pens, and stamps are all nearby. Cooking, cleaning, and anything else is easiest when the things you need for the job are accessible. Try to avoid running all over the house for things.

But this doesn't mean purchasing extras of everything. I try to keep the number of cleaning products I use to a minimum. If one product can do several "jobs" it's much better to just have that than to have 3 or 4 cleaning products in the cupboards. If you have multiple bathrooms or a large house, a cleaning-supply tote that can be carried from room to room could be useful.

These are just my ideas, things that work for our home. Does anyone else have any ideas to add to my list? I'd love for you to share them!

You've got some great ideas.

You've got some great ideas. Some I already do and some I think I will definitely start doing.
I love you site. I can't remember how I stumbled on it but it is wonderful you've done a great job. I've already used several of your recipes and plan to use some more soon.

Thank you

No shoes in the house! :D

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Shari! :)

Tanya, my parents always allowed shoes in the house (when I lived at home) but when Joshua and I got married, we quickly decided that no shoes was better... since we didn't have a lot of dirt being dragged into our house and it stayed pretty clean. Joshua has been so great about always taking off his shoes in the house!! He's wonderful. :)

Cold water soaking...

Tammy,

Is there a particular reason you recommend cold water for soaking dishes? Do you find it works better than hot, or is it just to save hot water? ; )

Cold water for soaking dishes

Marissa, it's just to save hot water ;) I think over a period of time (say, several hours) it does just as well. :) I do wash my dishes in very hot water though! I like clean dishes. :)

On soaking dishes

Okay, I get you. : ) And yes, hot water for washing/rinsing is not something nice to skimp on! : p

General keeping the house clean

I'm just finding your blog and firstly I want to thank you for sharing all of your tips, routines and practices.
We do many of the things that you mention. I would say for kitchen cleanlieness my favorite is to clean as I go. I learned this from years of my mom doing it, and then it was reinforced in my foods/cooking courses at college. If I prepare a meal, I try to have the prep dishes and utensils either washed or rinsed and in the dishwasher before I serve the meal.
I also have a place for everything. All of our boys's millions of little toys/puzzles/instruments/play foods/action figures and of course the cars and train pieces each have a place to be stored when not in use so cleanup is no more than about 15 minutes even if they have toys dispursed throughout the house in multiple rooms. We so some cleanup throughout the day like before a transition like a meal, leaving the house, or nap, but every night we do a big cleanup and they all are put away. I hate nothing more than getting up of the couch and turning of the living room light to only find myself on the floor in 3 seconds due to tripping over or falling on a toy in the dark.
Finally for most areas of our home I just try to not make a mess in the first place, and then I don't have to worry about cleaning up. I do have a few hot spots like my kitchen counter and my office desk, and now my sewing room. I'm working on keeping those areas clutter free and tidyed all of the time, but it's not easy since I'm make piles by nature!

Clean as you go

Anonymous, thanks for those extra tips!! I think cleaning as I go definitely makes the job seem less daunting! It's easier to do the dishes after a meal (when I'm usually feeling quite lethargic from the work of making the meal!) when there are only the ones from eating, and there's dish water already run, from when I was washing the prep dishes. :D

Organization/Home making

Thank you for your ideas, inspiration, and recipes! I have 3 children and when they were younger (they are now 11, 9, and 6) I found it easier to get things done and was much more organized. I had been slacking in a lot of areas around the house because of this event or that music lesson, home school, etc. and reading some of your ideas has helped me.

Motivation

Hi, Home School Mom! :) Thanks for your comment. I have noticed that sometimes when I just have to be motivated, I can do it... and then other times I get a little lazy... then I think, "How in the world did I do x, y, and z when I had a newborn?!" :)

Thanks!

Thanks so much for these and ALL the great tips on things i've been reading on this site! It's so nice to have a place to come to and read about other wives, and mothers like me.
I'm pregnant with my 5th son, due in December, and have found my house cleaning skills have gotten quite rusty. I feel inspired by reading all these things so that I can get myself organized and back in the swing of things.
I just wanted to send out a thanks to Tammy and everyone on here with all the great ideas.

Oh, thank you, Donna Sue! :)

Oh, thank you, Donna Sue! :) I definitely go through times of little energy/motivation, and it's always nice to get back on track. :) I'm glad you enjoyed this article. :)

Motivation Tips

Thanks for the motivation tips. Here a couple of mine.

The family makes a game out of cleaning on Saturday morning. We roll a dice. Each number is for a specific room. You never know which room will have to be jointly cleaned first. The kids like to finish as soon as possible so they can roll the dice again. It ususally goes pretty well.

I use a soft tape measure to section out my son's bedroom so he isn't overwhelmed by the amount of toys he needs to pick up. I start in a corner and keep moving the tape after each section is clean. Before you know it the toys are picked up.

To stay motivated I visit friends at their homes. After seeing how nice and tidy their home is I get inspired to work on my own. I also suggest visiting the Parade of Homes or home tours to give you ideas and keep you inspired.

I like to rearrage my furniture or decorations. It gives the home a refreshed feel and makes me feel good too!

Thank you for your tips!
