30-Day Organizing Challenge

This has some good organizing motivation (visit the links at the bottom of the post). I love seeing clutter, dirt, and disarray turn into beauty and order!

Those are some amazing

Those are some amazing transformations! I don't have anything quite that bad but I could definately use some more shelves and rubbermaid boxes- hard because the house is from 1860 so it can be a tad 'fragile' in thw wrong places haha or in other places impossible to put a nail in

I know!

Sara, I agree! :) And yes... every house if different! And the more children you have, the more necessities... :) I don't have any clutter that's completely unmanageable, but, I only have 2 children. :) And I try to clean frequently. It probably wouldn't take more than a month of no cleaning or organizing, and my house would look disastrous!!! :)

Yes, more children mean more clutter!

I can attest to that! #4 is on it's way here and I take care of #5 for 6 days a week full time. So in a sense I raise 4 children with one on the way! Clutter can creep up on you fast and without much notice. The only method I find that cures it , especially in our smallish house (1200 sq. ft), is constant decluttering.
I tell my friends when they comment how nice things are in my home, "Its a constant process!" And I believe that to be true once you have more children. I also find that living in a small home requires me to be organized with this many people in it. And I am blessed in that way. If I had more room to roam, its more room to clutter. :)

Michele

A constant process

Michele, yep! It doesn't happen on it's own, that's for sure! :) And hey, anyone can be clutter-free, they just have to part with their junk, like I do! ;)

I think small homes simplify things, to an extent. I don't think I could care for a large home without getting overwhelmed! I remember moving to our current home from our apartment, which was under 700 sq. feet in size. I was surprised at how much longer it took me to clean "the whole house"!

Parting is such sweet sorrow!

Parting with "stuff" is hard. We live in South Florida, we had help last year parting with "stuff" from Hurricane Wilma. We lost a great deal of things, or so we thought. Once we stood back and looked at the things, it was stuff we had no need for. We moved into a new home and I have yet to replace those "things". I often tell my DH that the Lord did the first step in decluttering for me! LOL It was an eye opener, but I do not recommend going through a hurricane as a means to help you declutter! It is awfully noisy way to get it done! LOL
Our home is not small in my mind. It is what the Lord has provided for my family. But I know for most of today's society, 7 people in a 1200 sq. ft. house is small. Course we live in a world where most of society thinks children shouldn't share a room either! LOL As we add children, we just rid ourselves of more stuff. I kinda' like that trade off! ;)

Hurricane help

What a great way to look at things! :) I am sure a lot of the things I still own, I would never miss if they disappeared.

One thing that helps me is having someone else to give my stuff to. I am so much more willing to get rid of things if I think someone else is going to appreciate and benefit from it. I always donate things to charity (like thrift stores or clothing banks) but it's even more motivating if I'm giving it to someone I know personally! :)

My parents know a missionary family in Japan, and they have 6 children. Homes are much smaller there than in the U.S. I believe their home is about 1200 sq. ft. and is considered large for that location! They get by just fine, although they said it can get a little crowded when they're having a lot of guests over. :)

I make a weekly trip to the thrift store!

I am like you, I love to give it away. I do not throw anything away. In our converted garage I keep a trash bag that I collect things in all week. I have a 15 yo son, 8 yo daughter, 5 yo daughter, 9 month old 'adopted' daughter and one on the way, so there is always SOMETHING that can be given away. We keep almost all of the girls clothes in case we have more girls in our future. But even then we only keep what I consider 'classic' clothing (polo type shirts, long skirts) and so on. Fancy dresses go to the children's consignment store, other things to the thrift store. My son is a manly size now, so all his clothes he no longer fits or needs go to the thrift store. So the bag gets dropped off every week which just happens to be when we stop off to browse ourselves! ;) I don't think we have bought "new" clothes other than special occasion dresses and underwear in YEARS.
I am always working a room too. This week I worked on the playroom. As they brought in the new to them toys they got as gifts, we took out things they no longer had interest in. Next week, is our room. Our son is due at the end of Feb. and we are readying our room for him, as all my wee ones sleep in our room for aleast 6 months after they are born. So it is time to declutter! :)

Michele

Weekly drop-off

Good for you, Michele! I usually have a stash just waiting to be taken to charity, because I go once a month or less! It's always a good feeling to get rid of the sorted-out stuff!

I also love it when people give me huge bags of stuff they don't want. I sort through it and then give away whatever we don't need. I always say "yes!" to hand-me-downs, as long as the person doesn't expect me to keep everything they give me!

Congratulations on your expectancy! Eliyahu just moved down to his own crib. I love having the new baby close by me at night for the first few months, especially! Even now, Eliyahu still spends about half the night beside me. ;)

It's one of my New Years resolutions...

to be better at housework and that means decluttering. I am not the problem but my husband has papers scattered through out the house of his drawings that he draws or articles. I don't know how many times I pick them up into a neat pile and the next day everything is scattered all over! He does the same thing with clothes! It's like telling a child to not throw their clothing on the floor cuz it's still clean! LOL Goodness! ;-)
I still love him though.. ;-)
Michele~ I am originally from South Florida (Port Charlotte). I miss home. My mom lost everything in Hurricane Charley. But I think she is more blessed now than she was back then and at least she's not in a trailer anymore (nothing wrong with them, but the one she lived in had to be a million years old and had critters roaming around in there and the landlord didn;t care).
God Bless!
Dawn

Dawn :)

Charley was so much worse than Wilma. The town of Punta Gorda still does not look the same! The Lord blesses us in the admist of the most trying of times I do believe. ~smile~
God Bless,
Michele
