I function best in an uncluttered environment. My brain already has enough things to think about without constantly looking for missing items or moving things from here to there to here in an effort to have some free counter space or a little bit of dressertop to use for a moment.
I wasn't always like this. I should scan some photos of what my bedroom looked like when I was 17 and living with my parents. Yikes!
Thankfully, I realised that sometimes, less is more. More room to work on projects. More space for hospitality.
I also realized that sometimes, less is less. Less work to clean around. Less bother to organize. Less effort to move.
The passing of time, the adding of children, and the blessing of a not-so-tiny home all tend to boost my possessions, and I find myself running out of counter space again, or filling up every single cupboard.
New things come into use, and other things are rarely touched. Some things that seem like a good idea to have just never really get used. And even though "my" personal items are at an all-time minimum, there's just so many things when you have a household... and a family!
Being frugal adds a whole new dimension to de-cluttering. I love to give away things I don't need. But I really don't want to give away things we do need, or may have to purchase later if I don't store them.
My friend Sheri recently told me that when she is de-cluttering, she prays,
"Lord, help me to get rid of the stuff we don't need and keep the things we will need."
What a novel idea! I am not an organizing pro. I desperately need wisdom when it comes to what to keep! I also need constant motivation and energy to keep on top of things like dirt and clutter.
I've been organizing in a big way in our home recently. I don't have before-pictures (although here are some 2-year-old photos of our living room and Yehoshua's bedroom--trust me, we have a lot more childrens' clothes and toys now!!!) but today I took some after-pictures of two rooms. (The kitchen photos are coming... once I get on top of the dishes and counters -- uhg!)
First, the living room. Joshua and I both agreed that the living room needed some changes. We took out the stereo (it's on top of the fridge now) and desk (it's in our bedroom now) and got rid of the stereo cart. We took out a box of toys and are storing them elsewhere, so that the toy-mess during the day is limited. I got rid of a few books and moved the last of my teabag collection upstairs.

Here you can see the bookshelf and toy area. This is about half of the living room. The bookshelf has homeschool supplies on the top shelf. My books are on the second shelf, the children's books are on the second and third shelves, and the bottom two shelves are now toy storage. I love how everything's contained -- books, homeschool supplies, and toys -- and there's more open floor space. We all love this "new" living room!

The other half of the living room.

And the view of our front door from the living room. The top of the piano has wedding photos, Bibles, and lamps. We debated getting rid of the lamps, since we've never used them in our almost five years of marriage. We'll see. :)
Next, the children's bedroom. This room is tiny. It has always been difficult to work with. It has a vent, two huge windows and two doorways (but no door! So we put up curtains), and one of the doorways is at an angle. Try arranging two cribs, two dressers, and a changing table in here, and you'll soon realise why that's all I have in here! :)
I only made two major changes in this room. First, we took the baby swing and put it into storage (in our room), since it's not used. I used it so much for Yehoshua, but Eliyahu hardly used it. I want to keep it just in case, since it was a lifesaver with Yehoshua.
The other major change I made was condensing the children's clothing. I used to have a huge tote full of clothes and baby supplies, sitting on the floor in here. Now, the clothes that fits them is all in the dressers, and the clothes that is too big or too small is all in boxes or totes under the beds. I hate storing stuff under the beds, but with no closet, that's my option. :)

Here you can see Eliyahu's (left) and Yehoshua's (right) cribs. (Both cribs were given to us second-hand, what a huge blessing!!) Underneath is boxes of clothes, birth supplies (leftovers), and a portable playpen. To the far left is one doorway. On the right, you can see one of the dressers. I had to hold the camera up by the ceiling to get this picture! :D

Another view, this time from the ceiling on the other side of the room! ;) Clockwise from bottom left: Eliyahu's crib, Yehoshua's crib, Eliyahu's dresser, Yehoshua's dresser (with my CDs and camera on top), the changing table (with diapering supplies underneath), and our dirty laundry hamper (basket).
There's actually some open floor space, and I don't think I can get this room much sparser. It's better than it was, though!
I'm still working on the kitchen (mostly minor stuff) and enclosed porch (probably major!), so stay tuned for updates in a week or two with more photos. :)

Tammy is the neatest house cleaner
I know I don't compliment her about this, but she keeps the cleanest house. Not just tidy and picked up, but CLEAN. As in eat off the floor clean. I am pretty sure at least 1 day a week I could if I wanted to :P She really has made the house feel more open and fun--as well as safe for the kids. Of course she keeps it so clean it is sometimes hard to tell when she has cleaned. I have been known to say, "The house looks nice sweetie" only to hear, "Really? I didn't do much cleaning today at all". All I can say then is, "Well, it looks great because it always looks great!" Thanks for keeping such a clean, warm, and hospitable home Tammy!
Awww, Joshua...
You're so sweet. And you did notice the other day when you came home from work and the house had been cleaned. ;) That makes up for the fact that when I ask you if the house looks clean, you usually say "The house is always clean!" which means, "Ummm, no, I didn't notice that you cleaned today!" ;)
Looks great! I have been
Looks great! I have been really feeling the need to clear out clutter and organize. It's just hard to let go of odds and ends that I've collected--they all some to have some emotion attached to them.
Seeing your neat, uncluttered house was really inspiring to me!
Good for you!
I always have been inspired when we leave your place!! You are very tidy and neat. Everything has a place! :) I really need to declutter around here, but where do I start? :) LOL
Looks very good and still very homey and comfortable, Tammy! I have come to realize that less stuff in a room is more restful and peaceful, then to much stuff. :)

Are you for hire? ;o)
Are you for hire? ;o)
Thanks...
Thanks, everyone. Tanya, I'm glad you think it still looks homey and comfortable! :) Sara, I'm already hired! ;)
I really do think so
You are welcome! :)
~Tanya
Good for you!
I think having a clean uncluttered home is important for children, more so for homeschooled children. This is a place for them to feel secure and rest. If chaos is surrounding them, I sure it makes them feel the same inside.
Can't wait to see more pictures of your kitchen. :)
God Bless,
Michele
agree!
I just wanted to add, I agree with you, Michele. It is now my goal to declutter more here. I have 4 children and we homeschool, so we are here all day and by evening it can be a mess around here. Then it is to overwhelming for the children to clean up. :(
~Tanya
Kitchen pictures
Michele, I agree, too! :)
And yes, I'm still working on the kitchen pictures. :) I need to pay the bills that are on the counter, and write a few thank-you notes before the counter will be completely cleared. :) Usually I stay more caught-up and get thank-yous written like the next day! :)
started to declutter here
Well I have made a goal to declutter our home. It will take time, but I am willing to do it. :) So if I need any encouragemnet, I'll email you, Tammy. LOL
Yesterday, I went through dh's and my closet, we have space in their now! I was able to put 2 lagre bags and 1 small bag into the goodwill bin. I spent time helping the girls clean up their room and we were able to throw out a lot of garbage. Not sure why they like to hang unto it... :) I did the boys room, it looks so clean and clutter free. It is a good start anyway!!
~Tanya
Tanya, that's wonderful! I
Tanya, that's wonderful! I was excited to see your photos on your blog. :) I have never seen your house before, so I enjoyed the peek at the boys' room, all nice and tidy! When a room is not too full of "stuff" and the bed is made, it looks so nice, I think! :)
Ooooo now I am motivated to get de cluttering!!!
Ya'll are away ahead of me on this! But like I said in another post it's one of my New Years resolutions to get de cluttered and what not. Not that my house is messy because it's not but I think I can do away with alot of stuff. I have to tell myself "do I WANT this or do I NEED it"? Also, "how will it benefit me and my family in our home?" That's another good thing to remember. ;-)
Dawn
Here's one of my tactics!
Sometimes when I fear I might be holding onto something simply because I like it, and I'll never use it, I give myself a time limit. "If I haven't used this purse at least 5 times in the next month, I'm tossing it!" I had never used the purse before, even though I had owned it for a tear or more! Same with clothing. If something is really "pretty" but just not something I like to wear, then bye-bye! :) Sad to say, I have things I've owned for years and never ever used or needed!!
help!
I can declutter with the best of them but I have a hard time keeping a "clean" house. Please give me some helpful tips!! Unfortunately I was not taught growing up so I am learning as I go and I guess I am a slow learner! I have a friend who always has a clean house but she doesn't give me any help on how to keep mine clean. I have tried so many things but in the end I always go back to my old ways. Help would be great...especially with a growing family! When do you find time to clean with two little ones?
Shorty
I am not a cleaning expert...
...but I will answer your questions in a blog post sometime, okay Shorty? :)
Michele replied with some good thoughts below: It's a combination of self-discipline, prayer, finding what works best for your family where you are right now (meaning it could change down the road!), and streamlining your tasks. I'm constantly working on that one!
Yes please, give us some tips!
Hi Tammy. I've never commented before but I really enjoy reading your blog. I, like Shorty, don't have a problem with clutter or neatening but would like my house be cleaner. Yours sparkles! Could you give us a peek at your cleaning schedule?
The biggest tip for cleaning...
I think Tammy is going to do a nice post on this, but I can tell you her secret weapon:
"An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure".
Tammy is always on the eye out for a mess and how to prevent it. We adjust little things in our daily cycles to help lessen the load. For example, we don't wear our shoes in the house because they track dirt in. The other example of how she does this is being pre-emptive. A child drops something on the floor. She quickly goes over and cleans up the mess thoroughly. This extends the time between moppings.
Tammy doesn't really have set cleaning times. Sure, she tends to dishes at night with Yehoshua and Eliyahu or laundry in the morning, but probably the biggest reason the house is always, and I mean always, uber duber clean is because she really prides herself on a clean house and is always trying to keep it clean, not spend a "cleaning hour" to make it clean. It is a LOT of work on her behalf (I don't think there is an easy solution) but I think she may have some great tips for making the job easier to maintain.
Way to go Tanya! :)
Tanya,
I agree....too much clutter is too much work for kids. WE limit their toys and we also have the rule, one play thing at a time. Otherwise the mess at the end of the day is too much for them and ME!We also apply the rule one in, one out. When they get a new toys they have to let go of an old or hardly used one. Clothing is an area I longed struggled in, growing up I didn't have alot so I think I was giving them way too much! Now we go through weekly. They grow so quick, don't they? Having the tubs for sizes and gender to keep things they outgrow has been a huge help. Course we have a huge storage area so I can do that. I know not everyone is blessed with that. But it certainly helps in saving money on further clothes and clutter as well.
God Bless,
Michele
Dawn, I know what you mean!
I use to have a clean CLUTTERED house as well. It got to be time consuming to clean around all that clutter. Do you ever feel that way? I know I did! I'm glad your motivated to start decluttering. Warning though, once you start it can be very addictive! :)
God Bless,
Michele
Shorty, there is hope!
I was raised in a non=christian, extreme feminist household where the men did more work than the women. I grew up looking to my mother for advice and it never came. So for years I struggled with cleaning and organizing. I can tell you how I conquered it.....discipline. Experts say it takes 21 days of repeating something to make it a habit. So that is what I did. I took one task at a time and repeated it for 21 days, when it was a habit, I moved on to another area I needed to work on. And to be honest, at 37, I am still doing that. Some people were lucky enough to be raised in a home where the work of a mother is valued and cherished. For those of us not, not only is it daily discipline to do it, it is a skill we have to learn as well.
As far as time to clean goes, it just has to be made. Find out when your level of discipline and motivation is best. For me right now being preggers, it's nighttime after the kiddo's go to bed. So that is what I do, I take advantage of my body's level of enegry and clean. During the day when I am filled with cooking, schooling and parenting....I tend to just straighten as I go. Find what works best for you, not what works best for all those different cleaning methods out there on the web. And just keep in prayer! :)
Best advice I have for you or anyone is this, stay here with Tammy. She is full of inspiration (aleast she has been for me!) and ways to get it all done. I really enjoy my time here. :)
God Bless,
Michele
Discipline in cleaning
Michele, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I have heard that also, about it taking 3 weeks to form a new habit. It is so tempting to fall back into old ways (or simply take the lazy way too often!) even after 3 weeks of "good", in my opinion. ;) But anyway, yes... one habit at a time! :)
And yes, there are so many different methods of cleaning or organizing on the web. I haven't ever really done any particular person's "system", but I enjoy reading about things I might be able to incorporate into the care and maintainance of our home. :)
P.S. Thanks for the compliments :)
