My Morning Routine and a Freezer Cookbook giveaway! (Eat Well, Spend Less)

My morning and evening routines are what keep me going these days, it seems. Oh, I have to smile when I get emails like this one from my friend Maleesa:
How do you balance working out, cleaning, making meals, home schooling, blogging and lots more? I find that I have to force myself away from the computer and say I will do things and reward myself to get computer time. Do you have a limit of time? Or just when you have time? Or do you give only cetain times for it?
Honestly? It's as simple as doing the most important things first. And when something doesn't get done that day, I just let it go. Sometimes I let the cleaning go for a bit, and then I suddenly get fed up with the mess or dirt and that anger fuels a fast and furious cleaning or organizing event! Often, I make a "to do" list and then divide the chores among all of us.
I don't have a computer time limit, and that works for me because I am usually quite happy to leave it turned off and do other things. That doesn't work so well for blogging, but currently I am putting homeschooling, family time, exercise, and sleep ahead of blogging. I think I would go insane if I tried to blog while home alone with 5 kids! Then Joshua comes home and we like hanging out together in the evenings. :)
And then it's bed time. I've become a big baby about having to function on less than 8 hours of sleep; I much prefer mornings when my alarm goes (at 5am) and I get up feeling refreshed and ready to start the day.
Moshe (2) is often awake in the morning before I am!
So what do I do? I've really pared down to a few basics. My morning and evening routines keep me going and my kitchen happy. :)
Every evening:
Load and run dishwasher
Hang wet dish cloth(s) up to dry
Fill the Berkey with water
Open the (finished) dishwasher and shake water off the dishes
Every morning:
Put away clean dishes
Get out a fresh dish cloth
Serve breakfast
If I can keep these routines going (and I usually can!), we have plenty of clean, dry dishes (with minimal effort), non-stinky dish rags, and filtered drinking water. :)
Our breakfasts are often oatmeal in the microwave, bananas, or eggs and toast. After breakfast, we get started right away on school. School, school. Right now it takes a portion of my day and an even bigger portion of my energy!
Which is one of the reasons I was so excited to receive this book in the mail last week:
Jessica Fisher, the great lady behind Life As Mom and Good {Cheap} Eats, has a new cookbook full of awesome recipes and freezer tips! I'm picky about freezer meals, but I know I am going to LOVE trying her freezer meal recipes and suggestions. Jessica includes an extensive grocery list and various meal plan options for making a big freezer cooking day of it, but I'll just be trying recipes here and there as the fancy strikes, doubling the recipes and freezing extras.
Not Your Mother's Make-Ahead & Freeze Cookbook is nearly 400 pages and a bargain for ~$11 on Amazon. I vastly prefer a bound and printed book to the e-book format, and this cookbook comes in nice quality paper. (There's also a Kindle edition available.) I was given a copy to keep in exchange for doing this giveaway.

I sometimes drink coffee or tea, but not always. Some days I love coffee, other days not. I'm not sure why?! :)
Channah sleeps with me so I don't really wake up with her during the night... just roll over, get her nursing again, and fall right back to sleep. Love that! ;)
For a newborn, I try to go to bed early and spend 9-10 hours for "sleep" to make up for the time spent awake during the night. It doesn't always work out, but I've learned to make sleep a priority and sleeping with my babies has worked well for me.
I can tell that when I've gotten 8 hours of sleep I am a " morning person" -- I wake up (with the alarm) ready to start the day! Considering that my 3 boys (ages 8, 6, and 2) are very much "morning people", it's best if I can start the day "on time" and mentally alert. ;)
P.S. I only get up early because I have to -- I get Joshua's breakfast/lunch ready and the kids are often awake before my alarm goes anyway! It can be difficult to go to bed early enough to get 8 hours of sleep before 5am. Joshua and I love talking and spending time together too... just don't want anyone thinking I'm a saint for getting up at 5... I think 7 would be nicer. ;)

Freezer Cooking Book

No... the only draining is when we use the water. The filters are only able to be installed in one way.

I'd be thrilled to win this book! I stumbled on your blog a few weeks back and love the kitchen tip Tuesday series...so far I've gone back 30 pages. I had twins in June and went back to work full time in September so I have to have something to do during the times I pump and 1 page of kitchen tip Tuesday usually is good for 1 pumping. It's interesting reading someone's life in reverse and I was pleasently surprised to read that you're local (I'm in Kingston) and I can relate with your blogs about blackberries and rain. Lol. Pick me! Pick me! I NEED this book! I used to do once a month cooking but have gotten away from it and need a "push" back in that direction. It really made my day to day so less stressful, one less thing to think about...what to cook for dinner? THAT one usually hits me first thing in the morning and is a lingering question all day long. With OAMC you just send the kids to the freezer to pick out dinner. Easy and delicious!

I'm trying to do more and more "at home" cooking. Currently we do "Soup Night" once a week where I make a pot of homemade soup once a week and I'm trying to bake bread more often. I've a loaf of bread rising in the oven even as I type this, With both of us working and going to school, it's a challenge.
We have a small upright freezer that we just need to get emptied and defrosted and then I want to refill it with make ahead stuff. Chopped veggies for soups, homemade beans made from dried beans, some freezer meals - stuff like that. So, I'm always on the hunt for cookbooks, recipes and ideas I can incorporate into that.
