Big Berkey Giveaway with Waterview Spigot!

Ruth drinking water by the Royal Berkey

We've had our Berkey water filtering system for almost 3 years now, and we LOVE it. I wrote a review of the Berkey water filter a couple years ago, and have been priviledged to host discount codes for 10% off at, the Christian-owned company where we purchased our Royal Berkey.

This week, I've got something more: a Berkey discount code AND a giveaway! More Than Alive is offering a Big Berkey with a Waterview Spigot to one winner of this giveaway. I'm honored that they would offer this for readers of my website, and I'm thrilled that one of you will be blessed with a Berkey water filter for free! (See the end of this post for giveaway details.) Note: This giveaway is now closed. Future discount codes will be available on this site. Subscribe for free to be notified of future discounts and giveaways!

For 5 years of our married life, we had been buying and refilling jugs of drinking water at the grocery store each week, and it was a lot of work to fill and transport all that water. Even at $0.37 a gallon for a refill, I was spending $4-5 each week on drinking water.

The jugs took up a lot of space in my cart, a lot of space in our car trunk, and a lot of time to fill. And then the inevitable would happen... "Honey, it's been 8 days since we went to the store, and we only have 2 gallons of water left..."

Ruth filling a glass from the Berkey

Our tap water was horrible, and all the filtering systems we had looked into were expensive and/or slow. When I found out about the Berkey water filters, I practically begged Joshua to help me research their efficacy and buy one! :) He readily agreed and we purchased the Royal Berkey from More Than Alive in 2008.

We're still using the original filters (which should last 3 more years!). In fact, we love the Berkey so much, we gave Royal Berkeys as a wedding gift to my brothers who got married in May and July of last year. We couldn't think of a more useful gift than clean drinking water that's convenient and affordable! :)

I tend to ramble when I talk about our Berkey water filter, because I'm just so thankful and blessed to have one in my kitchen! :)

On our countertop: Berkey water filter, glass, water bottle, and jug for filling

Why we love the Berkey:

The water tastes EXCELLENT!

Berkey drinking water is affordable. Over the life of the filters, the water is only $0.016 per gallon! In 12 months' time, our savings would completely purchase a Royal Berkey water filter.

Having a Berkey water filter is convenient. The water filters quickly (4 gallons per hour for our Royal Berkey) and it's right in my kitchen. The tank holds several gallons of filtered water at one time, and the children can fill their own cups of drinking water.

It doesn't require electricity to filter the water. The Berkey water filter is part of our "emergency preparedness" mindset. It can even filter rain water (but not sea water).

The stainless steel Berkey even looks beautiful... although here in the Seattle area people who see it usually first ask us "How much coffee do you guys drink??!!" :)

What's not to love about the Berkey water filter?

Honestly, I have trouble thinking of dislikes about this product! :)

I will say that if I am filling a large cooking pot with water (like when I cook pinto beans), I like to pull a chair up to the Berkey and set my pan on the chair to fill instead of holding it. :)

Another possible issue is that the Berkey water filters are fairly tall (you can see dimensions on the website), and may not fit on counters with cupboards above. We have had our Royal size Berkey while living in 3 different rentals now, and have always found a spot for it without purchasing a stand of some sort. :)

Royal Berkey with Waterview Spigot

What is the "Waterview Spigot"?

One of the free items More Than Alive offers with their Berkey water filtering systems is a waterview spigot. (When we ordered our Berkey, we chose the additional fluoride filters as our free gift, since we're filtering city tap water. For those filtering well water or rain water, the fluoride filters are unnecessary.)

The waterview spigot is a spigot with a tall glass tube attachment that shows the water level in the stainless steel Berkey tank of already-filtered water! No more guesswork or accidentally filling an already-filled Berkey and causing a flood. (Umm, yes, I have done this a couple times in the time we've owned our Berkey!)

In conjunction with this giveaway, More Than Alive sent us a waterview spigot to try with our Royal Berkey. I had heard rave reviews of the waterview spigot from some friends of ours who have one, but hadn't purchased one myself since I'm a tightwad and was accustomed to just looking inside to see how full the tank was. :)

Joshua put the waterview spigot on our Royal Berkey a couple weeks ago, and I love having it!

One perk is that the water runs out faster (it must have a bigger opening than the original spigot did), and you know me... I love to chug my water! :)

And of course, the other perk is that I can keep the Berkey full without any trouble! :)

Royal Berkey with Waterview Spigot

We "hacked" the Waterview Spigot!

Well, kinda. :)

We filled the bottom tank nearly to the top, and then took out 1 gallon of water. Joshua marked the new water level on the waterview tube. Then, we took out another gallon of water, and Joshua marked that level on the waterview tube as well. This gives me a concrete way of determining how many gallons to put in at any time! I used to wait until the bottom tank was almost empty before filling, but that's not nearly as convenient as knowing I can put in 1-2 gallons, for sure, with no risk of overflowing. :)

Why order from More Than Alive?

All Berkey systems have FREE SHIPPING --and More Than Alive ships quickly in my experience!

All Berkey systems come with a FREE GIFT! (Update from 2012: More Than Alive no longer offers a free gift with Berkey purchases.) I highly recommend the additional fluoride filters if you have city tap water, as in our experience it does make a difference in the water quality. A friend gave me one of the chlorine shower filters when we lived in Ohio, and it was very nice as well. I was unable to use it at our apartment when we moved to WA, so I passed it on to another friend when we moved. And now I've tried the waterview spigot as well, and it's just great! So, you have a hard decision ahead if you're buying a Berkey and need to figure out what free gift to choose. ;)

The discount code:

This week for 5 days only (January 3-7, 2011), get 10% off any order by using this code at checkout: TX2Q4

If you've been waiting to purchase a Berkey water filter, this discount will give you $20+ off your purchase price! :)

What if you already own a Berkey? Well, go ahead and enter the giveaway, if you wish! I personally think a Berkey water filter would make a perfect wedding gift, new home gift, or a gift for a needy family. I can think of several families who I would love to bless with a Berkey, and you probably can too! :)

What if you have more questions about the Berkey? Read the comments about the Berkey water filters here. Check out this post with Q&A about the Berkey water filters. Watch videos and view Q&A about the Berkey at More Than Alive's website. Or, leave a comment here with your question! :)

Am I about done talking about the Berkey? Yes. For now. :)

Full Disclosure, as always: After purchasing our Berkey water filter and being thrilled with its performance, I signed up as an affiliate with More Than Alive. If you purchase from them using my links, I receive a commission on sales. The discount code is valid with or without using my links. :)

I am really choosy when it comes to product promotions. In fact, most everything I've ever reviewed or mentioned here is something we purchased ourselves and loved enough to want to tell others about it... and that most certainly includes the Berkey water filters! :)

I would love to win your Berkey giveaway. We have city water that is often white with chlorine and smells like bleach. Yuck! So a Berkey would be perfect as the four of us drink a LOT of water. I would love to win this. We live in our RV and never know much about our water source. This would give peace of mind.

Now that I am going to college, having one of these would be SO nice! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

I think it's wonderful that MorethanAlive is allowing you to host a giveway. How generous of them!

I know that the Berkey filters are the best in the business and would be delighted to win one. It would make a wonderufl gift for someone. Clean drinking water is so important. My husband and I bought several of the travel Berkeys a few years ago and sent them to Haiti with a missions group. We've received letters and pictures from Haitians who are just thrilled to have potable water to drink.

This is an amazing giveaway. It would be great to win!

I have been waiting for finances to loosen up a bit before approaching my husband about buying a Berkey. Right now we filter with a PUR countertop filter. It works, but the filters are expensive and I'm not convinced they are that great.

Love your site Tammy! Thanks for offering this great giveaway!

Hope this works. I didn't log in that time.

~ MrsKatie

This would be a great resource for our family as we are beginning to be more conscious of what we are putting into our bodies. Thanks for the give away!

I would love to win this! We have very very hard well water, and this would be great, Thanks!

Please enter me in your giveaway! We'd love to have one of these for our family. We go through a LOT of water, and would love this healthy way to enjoy it! We probably couldn't justify the cost of buying one, so this would be great to win!

Thanks so much for your blog and sharing your cooking adventures and family life. It's so encouraging to see how God is working in your home!

I would absolutely love to win this Berkey! We just moved to Ohio and our water is horrible. We have a water softener due to the extreme hardness of the water, but it doesn't do anything for the way it tastes. I do have a Brita filter pitcher that helps a little with the flavor, but I know it doesn't actually remove most of the chemicals/flouride, etc that are in the water.

We would love to try the Berkey filter!

I would love one of these!!!

Thanks for the great giveaway!

We would love to try the Berkey! We use a filter now, but I'm not sure how many chemicals it actually removes. This sounds great!

Please enter me in the Berkey give away! Thanks...

I would love to win this, so please add me!

Tina Kim

Please enter me in the Berkey water filter giveaway. Thank you also for your blog. It's the one that I really truly enjoy and read on a regular basis!

Nanci- Mom to 3 boys, 3 girls

I'd LOVE to win!!! :-)

Please enter me in the give away! That would be a huge blessing to our growing family.
Thank you for sharing your blog, recipes and encouragement.

I don't have a Berkey and would love to have a Berkey! Thank you for doing this giveaway especially for those that can't afford one!

I love my Berkey light, but I have really been wanting to get the stainless steel one. Thanks for the chance!

I would love to be entered. Thanks!

I know exactly who I would give this too, if I were the winner. Our friends are using a stand water filter system which only allows rental of their system. I know this would be a huge blessing to them if they could have their own system and save that monthly fee.

Thank you for doing this! How great will this be for someone??!

How are you doing? We're finally getting all settled in after moving. This is a great giveaway; crossing my fingers. ;-)

Please enter me into your give-a-way. We currently use the PUR filter and would LOVE one of these. I would be GREAT for all of us moms with kiddos. Thank you!

I've entered several giveaways before, but I have to say that this one is one that I would consider to be the best of the best----
We've been looking at the Berkey's for a while now and decided that this year we're definitely going to get one when we get our income tax money, but if I could win one that would be even better! ;-)
I was surprised to read that you believe your filter will last for another 3 years---I figured that we'd have to replace them every 6 months to a year. That's an even greater selling point in my opinion!
Thanks for hosting the giveaway --- and for giving your honest opinions!

I would love on of these. What a great giveaway.

this would be amazing! Enter me, please!

Thanks so much for the giveaway. I'd get one if we hadn't just bought a filter. Bummer, but I'll probably get one of these if we ever move to Cambodia.

We refill our .5 Gallon Britta pitcher several times a day. I'd love to have a source for larger quantities of filtered water.

Thanks for the fun giveaway.

Hi Tammy-

We would love to receive a Berkey filter. Our water comes from an old well, and while it always tests as safe, it still tastes a little "off."

Thank you again for this great site!

This does sound as amazing this time as the last time I read about it. One way or the other... eventually I'd love to have one of these!

- Chantel

I would love to win this.....I have been wanting one for a long time but it just is not in our budget right now.

I learn something from you every time I read your blog. I didn't know that you could get a flouride filter for the Berkley. I am very interested, there is seems to be a lot of interest in the use/overuse of flouride. I think a Berkley could improve the taste of my over chorinated city water. Thank you

I would LOVE to be entered! Thanks!

I'd love to win this! Thank you for entering me!

Lisa in Jax

Our water is tolerable after it's sat in the refrigerator for 24 hours--and that's after it's been through a water softener and wall filter, before which it smells, like my nephew so aptly puts it, "like rotten eggs"--but to actually have good-tasting drinking water immediately would be wonderful!

I would love to be entered in the drawing for a free Berkey. Our relatives are all using them and love them!

I still don't have an account (never got authorization after I entered my information) but I'd love to have a chance to win this. These are wonderful! I've followed you forever and have another friend who is now making your recipes too :)

I've been looking at a Berkey for a few years, now--mainly at morethanalive--but just can't seem to bring myself to buy one, as much as I'd like it--and we really need it, now, more than ever. Winning this give-away would solve that problem!

As a customer of morethanalive, I reiterate what Tammy said: they have consistently great service!

This would be wonderful! Thanks for hosting this giveaway.

Oh, I'd love to win! Thanks for doing this giveaway!

Looks wonderful - I've been thinking of these since I saw your review a few years ago. I'd love to enter the giveaway.

This looks amazing and I would love to have one of these in my home :)

What timing... We just moved and are now on city water. One of the things I'll miss the most was our wonderful well water at our previous location! Seriously considering one of these...if I won it, it would be a God send!

My husband and I were just debating what to do about our horrible tasting city water yesterday. I would love to win one of these!

These are awesome--I'd love to have one. My friend has to get drinking water from town, this would be great for her.

Mahalo and Happy New Year!

fantastic giveaway Tammy! I am diabetic and I drink TONS of spring water I buy at the store.. this would be ideal for me!
Please enter me in the giveaway! Thank you and blessings to you & your family!

Ooohhh, I feel so guilty. I haven't commented on your blog since the old style pages you had, pre-log in days. I flit through to read still but just don't comment. Not as much blog time lately.

But I really, really, really would love to win this. My husband is the only one who can fill our water cooler and it is getting too hard for him to lift the big water jug once it is filled. It holds five gallons and is really heavy. Lately he has had aching shoulders and can't lift heavy things. It would be so cool if I could take over this chore for him. Not to mention the money we'd save.

Hi Tammy

please enter our family in the Berkey giveaway. We have been seriously wanting one because of the super hard water we get here at our house and we drink a lot of water. The price has been the only thing holding us back. I've been saving for awhile for it. Winning one would truly be a blessing for our thirsty family of 6. Thank you!

"If at first you don't succeed, try-try again"

This would be great.

usually we are filling drinking water from the frig filter spout...but it's not easy for the little ones. Thank you for the opportunity!!

Happy New Year to you and your family, Tammy!!

This is great! I've been hearing a lot about the Berkey and since we are moving to a new house I have to look into a new water filtration system. The house is surrounded on three sides by farmland, which sounds wonderful, but the fields are doused with herbicides every year and we have well water. Kinda makes me nervous, but I'd feel a lot better with a Berkey!

Please enter me. Thank you!

This would surely beat lugging water jugs - thank you for the giveaway opportunity. :) Lyn

I commented a couple of days ago to be entered and it didn't show up for some reason, or else I'm just not seeing it, but I looked through the comments twice, once quickly, and the second time more methodically. So I am putting up another comment, just in case! Because we would love a chance to win this! We are trying to drink more water in our family and the tap water here is extremely hard. Good luck to all who enter! And thank you for hosting this wonderful giveaway!

Please, please, please enter me in this wonderful giveaway! Thanks!
Also, Tammy, thanks so much for your helpwith my account!

For posting this information and a chance to win a Berkey! I've been searching for the last year or so to try to figure out what the best water filtering system is the most healthy and read a lot of conflicting information. Your website was the first that I'd heard of them and am so excited to have found the best solution for our day to day water needs and also the security of having something so critical to our families safety in a disaster in one! And I would love the win it of course! ;)

Hi Tammy,

Love your site! Please enter me in the drawing. I already purchased one a couple of years ago after reading your review, but with 6 kids we could definetely use an extra. Thanks.

Umm Mujahid

I would love to win one of these! We currently use a simple Brita jug, but I'm pretty sure it's made out of polycarbonate (which contains BPA) and I'd love to replace it. The filter catches a couple metals, but that's about it - I guess it's one of those you-get-what-you-pay-for things!

Please enter me in the giveaway - I would love a Berkey!

What a blessing this giveaway will be to the lucky winner!!!!

I'd love win one for a friend!

I have been desperately wanting a water filter! We have been using a Brita pitcher I got cheap with a coupon but the filter needs to be replaced and I know that can get expensive! I have been saving for a filter system but other things keep coming up! (: I hope to win! (:

Please enter me!

I would love to win the Berkey. Our little town has very chlorinated water because the water comes from a nearby lake.

Please enter me in the Berkey water filter giveaway.

would love a berkey right now, as we are living in a camper and having to fill up water bottles at Wal-mart every 2-3 days (we have a large family and drink at least 5 gallons a day!)

I would love to win a berkey!! we have city water!! So I buy my drinking water. I love........ your blog!!

i would love to enter my family in this giveaway. My oldest is autistic and I am to nervous to let him drink or even brush his teeth with our water :(

We are purchasing a Berkey. Our concern is how sturdy is the waterview spigot & IF our children will break the waterview spigot. We have 6 children, youngest is 3 yrs 2 mo. I like what you guys did marking the # gal. marks. Please contact the manuf. and suggest they add marking inside the canisters (gal & 1/2 gal markings) as well as on the waterview spigot. That would help, to know how many gallons I can add instead of waiting for it to be empty,

I would say the waterview spigot is fairly sturdy. Obviously, a child being rough and grabbing/pulling it could either break it (if the Berkey is full of water) or pull over the Berkey (if it is emptier).

Our children all use the Berkey to fill their cups (except the baby; the ones who use it are ages 6, 5, and 3) and we haven't had any problems! If your children will be careful (i.e. use it just to get water, nothing crazy!) it should be fine! We don't even touch the waterview spigot when using water. :)

hi does anyone know where to buy a floor stand for the royal berkey?

It is almost a year since you had one, just wondering. I could use the discount.

Do you know how well this works with hard water?

The Berkey works well with hard water, but keep in mind that it will remove rust/iron but NOT calcium. When we lived in Ohio, the water from our Berkey still had some calcium and, for example, my tea kettle would still get very light calcium build-up on the bottom.

I haven't had experience with all types of water, obviously -- but the remaining minerals and calcium is something to keep in mind when considering the Berkey water filter, depending on what your specific needs/desires are. :)

If by "hard water" you mean a lot of iron, then the Berkey should do a great job of taking out the iron. You will have to scrub red rusty-looking filters more often though (according to friends who have lots of iron in their water!).

I think in general the more "stuff" that's being filtered out of your water by the Berkey, the more often you will need to clean the filters. With our Seattle-area fairly-soft city tap water, the filters don't need scrubbed very often at all. In Ohio, it was every several months. WELL worth the 10-15 minutes it takes, though! :)

I'm curious how is the waterview spigot surviving with children in the house :)

I was afraid to pick that as I was concern my children would break it...they aren't destructive but they are children with a mind to learn.

We put our Berkey on top of our microwave cart. When filing our Berkey, we have to stand on a stepstool. My oldest (taller than I, I'm only 5 3) figured out when removing the lid, he can tilt the lid...& use it as a 'mirror' to see how empty the Berkey is.

Oh, that's so creative to use the lid as a mirror to see how full your Berkey is! :)

We've had our waterview spigot for over a year now and it's held up fine. It's clean and in great shape. (One of our friends said they didn't get one because they wondered how it could be cleaned... I'm not sure on that, but ours doesn't look dirty inside -- and the faucet part can be cleaned of course)

I have had to tell Moshe (2) to not touch it -- but I think it's one of those things that after a while, it loses its interest because the kids see it every day. They all (except Moshe) get their own drinks of water and the spigot has done fine -- though we have told them to be gentle when they use it... it's not a toy. ;)

I've read about the Berkey water system last year and really wanted one -- but unfortunately they don't ship to my state. :( Glad to hear that it really is as wonderful as I've read!

I have an idea for you...when you have family/friends coming to visit...order a Berkey, have it shipped to them, ask them bring it with them :) or if you'll be visiting them, order it & have it delivered to them & pick it up when you go visit :)

I had the same trouble. I use about 5 gal a week and I am unable to carry them into the home. I buy about 5 at a time and putting 4 into a square plastic case. The kids need to stop by and carry them into the house from the van. I ordered the travel Berkey and am having it delivered to a relative in Wisconsin and she will deliver it to me in a couple weeks. I hope it will clean up my well water. Well is only 35" deep. I have tried reverse osmois, but the water pressure is too low.. I hope the stainless steel is made from a good quality. I am more for a glass storage.

I am a big fan of you website, though I have not posted a comment before. I also have 5 children about the same ages as yours and I love your recipes! Anyway, I am finally about to buy a berkey water filter after wanting one for many years. I am wondering if the Royal size is what you would recommend for our family. Also, with the shower head, did it affect your water pressure? Finally, for the PF-2 filter, I just read that it uses aluminum oxide to filter the flouride from the water. Do you know of any good sources of information on the safety of this product? I know that aluminum is a suspected cause of alheimers. Thanks Tammy for your help! And, thank you for your website! I have really enjoyed it over the past several years!

Hi! :)

I think the Royal Berkey is a great medium-family size choice. We usually fill ours once per day; sometimes more often if I'm cooking beans or something that takes a lot of water. Both my 6-year-old and my 8-year-old can fill the Berkey using a chair pulled up to the counter. :)

It's been a few years since we used the shower head filter (when we moved, none of our shower heads were easily removable, so I gave the filter to a friend), but I do recall it limiting water flow slightly. I actually preferred the water flow with the filter; there was enough pressure for a nice shower still. :)

I do remember reading up on the fluoride/arsenic filter; this link has some of the information I came across in my research which made me comfortable using those filters. :)

Thanks so much for your kind words and sweet comment! :) Have a good week. :)

Thank you very much Tammy for the reply to my Berkey Water Filter questions. After reading the information that you posted the link to,I ordered a Berkey Filter through However, I had some second thoughts and was interested in seeing the results of 3rd party testing. So, I called New Millinium Concepts,, at 1-888-803-4438 and asked for their 3rd party testing results. They emailed me 3 lab reports on the black berkey filters and the results looked good and showed that they removed chlorine, heavy metals, etc. However, when I asked about the PF-2 fliters, they said that they had no lab reports available. I asked specifically about the alumina oxide used. Valerie Foo, the Account Manager with whom I spoke, said that I could filter the water through the PF-2 filters and then again through the black berkey filters to remove the aluminum. She even suggested that, if my husband was handy, he could rig up something, using a 5 gallon bucket to do this. I asked her if she used the PF-2 filters and she said no, because in the city where she lives, flouride in the water is not an issue, however if she did live in a city where it was an issue, she said that she would use them, but do a double run on the water, as described above, because she "wouldn't like what would come out" with the single run. I also called a second time and asked another person if they had any lab results which showed that beneficial minerals are retained in the water after being filtered through the black berkey filters as stated on their website. He said that he didn't know of any, but would get back to me after talking to someone in managment about that. I wanted to let you know what I found today. I was really hoping to find a filter that would take flouride out of my water safely, but this is very concerning to me. I don't want to rely on statements made, with no lab results to back them up, by a company who is trying to sell a product. What are your thoughts on this? Please feel free to double check my findings and if you would like to send me a personal email my address is Thank you, Erika

Hi Erika,

Thanks for sharing about what you've found out about the black and PF-2 filters! I can see how it would be a fairly simple set-up to filter the water through black filters > PF-2 filters > black filters. I know when we had city water in Ohio, using the PF-2 filters made a big (good!) difference in the water. Now that we have Seattle's city water, we haven't replaced the fluoride filters when they last stopped working (maybe a year ago or so). (We mostly smell chlorine in the water here and the black filters take that out wonderfully!)

It seems that any affordable drinking water solution isn't 100% perfect. I've read that the "ideal" solution is reverse-osmosis water with minerals added back into the water...

Hopefully you get some good news on the fluoride filter issue -- thanks again for sharing what you've been able to find out so far! :)
